Chapter Two: Angel's Entrance

Chapter Two: Angel's Entrance

Evan's parents stayed in Evan's room for hours. They didn't do much besides cry, hug each other, and hug Elephant. Elephant loves hugs, but only if they're from Evan. Evan's parents? Elephant would have passed if given the choice. After being hugged, squeezed, and held to death for much too long, Evan's father finally convinced Evan's mother to go downstairs with him. As soon as he helped the sniffling woman out the door, Monster appeared from just beyond the edge of the shadow the bed casts on the floor.

"What the heck was that all about?" He says with wide, eyes. Elephant mirrors the expression while leaning over the bed and says, "I have no idea. But Evan wasn't with them!" Elephant punctuates this with a frustrated stomp on the wrinkled blanket.

"I know why Evan is not here," a light voice whispers from all around the room. A light appears from the closed window above Evan's bed. The light takes shape, transforming into two folded white wings. The wings pull back to reveal a beautiful girl with flowing white hair and a gold trimmed dress. Delicate, golden, ballerina shoes touch the surface of the bed and the light fades as the small, glowing figure curtseys in greeting. Elephant groans in return. Even though he can't see her, Monster can tell what she's doing from up top the bed. "Hello, Angel." He says flatly from the floor. Elephant says nothing, only glares.

"Greetings to you both," The angel responds in a soft, smooth voice. She gracefully straightens up and bats her long, golden lashed eyes. "You boys miss me?" Elephant's eyes shrink into angry slits as the glare intensifies. "Oh, forgive me," Angel says, deliberately passing a gaze over Elephant, "Did you two miss me?"

"Look at me when ya talkin', Angel!" Monster hollers from below. The golden eyed being sighs and floats over to the edge of the bed. She looks over at Elephant. "Surely you want to know where your precious Evan is, correct?" She smirks and jumps over the edge, never falling though. She smoothly floats down to the floor as Elephant huffs and makes it down via the nightstand route. Angel chats with Monster while waiting impatiently for Elephant. "Catch any mice this time of year, Monster?" She says with a too-perfect smile. Monster returns the fake sweetness with civility. "Not many mice since they set out them metal cages."

"Have you considered switching to insects? I hear mosquitoes are popular among your kind."

As much of a gentleman as Monster is, it would take anyone a disposition of titanium in order to stay completely civil when speaking with a guardian angel. "I'm not one for cockroaches and 'squitas, Angel."

"My, my, I was simply asking." The smile falters a bit, revealing the first few signs of an angel's true personality.

"Enough chit-chat!" Exclaims Elephant, who has finally made it to the tan-carpeted floor. "Where's Evan?!"

"As elegant as ever, Elephant. Oh dear, that was too many "e" words." Angel sighs as she looks back at the two, her smile now an annoyed frown. "I always become less of myself whenever I am forced to be around you both."

Monster lays a slightly slimy tendril on Elephant's back to keep Elephant's seams from exploding. "Angel," he says, "Why're ya here and Evan's not?" He locks eyes with Angel, giving her a look that says be serious. "What happened?"

Angel acknowledges the silent message by pasting the fake smile on smile back on her face. "Well," she says. She floats over to an over-turned, empty box that once held a slime making kit. She sits on the box and delicately arranges her laced skirts, the gold trim glimmering in the moonlight from the window. "Well, well, well, my acquaintances. We have a bit of a problem." A sinking feeling begins in Elephant's stomach, if stuffed animals had stomachs. Angel makes her hands into fists and places them under chin.

“I am afraid our little Evan has been kidnapped."
