Hope and Despair

Hope and Despair

Many years have passed since the times when dragons and wizards once lived. Many will wonder whether this story is just a plain fairytale. Others wish that it’s true. For what it really is, no one knows.  Not even I.

A fearsome war was upon this very land a thousand years ago. People screaming, children crying and warriors slaughtering the innocent. The sky; pitch black, vanishing out of sight as the fire was claiming the unforgettable sins buried in people’s hearts. General Weild had one mission; to obliterate every last drop of magical blood. An oath to the land redeemed by the fire, to purify the region. Remove the dirt, and let solitude rise, in a world were nothing is due and everything seems possible. Some families managed to survive the tragedy buried inside the earth in volcanos and caves. Our hero wasn’t one of them.

In the midst of all that frenzy, he stood in the city center were a huge oak breathed life, and witnessed trembling the unforgivable.

A woman was being executed for possessing magic and retaliating against the country. She was blonde and slim, with an enormous sense of duty and pride. She was trying to protect her children, fighting with water magic.  The general ordered ther woman to be tied to the tree and be burned alive. The woman screeming in pain, burned slowly in the eyes of  her 2 year old son Alphonse, leaving nothing but ashes behind. The child couldn’t bare watch and left for its home. Were no one was waiting for him anymore, he rushed in his bed and slept in tears defending the whole house of invaders with his innocent heart.

Late at night when the city was literaly destroyed the priest strolled in tears and hope to find a single soul alive. In vain he fell in dispair. He raised his hand in the sky and screamed, only to be interrupted with a cold cry. A baby, right inside the ashes were that woman was burned. A cursed child, the priest sighted. Must I be burdened with this? He scream while getting closer. The newborn child seemed innocent enough to win the fathers trust. Quickly he hid the child as a night patrol was on duty and rushed back at the church.

I call upon you God, protect us and accept this child as your own. I name thee Maximus.

The priest said, as he placed the child with the other orphans the church cared about.

It was a raining morning, the last day of the summer, as most children were getting sad that school was starting, there were these few students whose hearts were beating faster and faster as the first day of school arrived. Some were orphans, others homeless and some children appeared to be normal but held a great secret. One of those children was the daughter of King Alexander II, Princess Cordelia Grace. At the age of 10 a few select children would get an invitation to the world’s most prestigious school, Elements of Magic. A school like no other. A school of Magic.

Cordelia was the first child to receive the Orb of Life, the very soul of a wizard, and a direct invitation to the school. The school sends out the Orbs to each student the Headmaster selects but not all make it through. You see, to be able to attend the school you need a couple of things first. And of course, to pass the entrance examination.

One by one all children received the Orb, and the examination was about to take place at 00:00 September 2. It was September 1. 23:57 and Alphonse hadn’t yet received the Orb. Alphonse wasn’t one of the children selected by the Headmaster due to a dark secret in his past. These kinds of children weren’t allowed in this School.

“Al! I’ll let you in on a secret” Al’s aunt, Dr. Aphrodite Jaeger his aunt whispered as the examination was about to start.

‘A million waves can never stun a liquid Heart’ she said.

Three thousand children had gathered in front of the school entrance waiting for the examination to begin, but only 19 had orbs. This time the opportunity was given to one individual who had those things required to attend the school. And Alphonse had all of them.

One by one the children got at the door were the headmaster would ask them a question.

“What is your Element?”

The children were able to choose the element they wished for but the element had to reside in their heart in order for them to procced to the examination. Alphonse literally had an empty heart as what he had witness as a child and what existed in his blood was unbearable. Dispite that, he was going to prove that no matter what, he could succeed.

One by one the children who had received an orb proceeded to the headmaster and slowly muttered the element of their preference. If by any chance the element agreed to the claim, a drop of magical existence would travel from the element itself into the orb itself, awakening it and bestowing an oath for selection.
