Prologue

April 18, AS 896

Yorlan Forest, border of the Koinom Province, edge of the Kingdom of Tessa

Here we stand, leaning on our knees and panting. The battle was hard, but our four charges proved themselves more capable than we imagined. We were supposed to keep them out of trouble, but they were adamant, the fire boy especially. We still don’t know their names, but I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fire claimed that since he started the war, he would help end it, and the others pledged their support to him. When George tried to interfere, Air used her power to throw him to the next province.

Their ‘support’ was quite something. Water waved her hand and wiped out almost the entire invading army in one fell swoop. Earth stomped his foot and the entire mountain shifted, toppling the enemy king’s palace. Air raised her hand and all the rubble floated, saving any civilians from certain death. Fire rushed in and found the enemy prince, claiming that his earlier insults had been spoken in jest. The prince, wishing to spare his country from any further destruction, offered forgiveness in exchange for avoidance. The two boys agreed not to speak to each other unless absolutely necessary, or they worded it, “until pigs fly and hell freezes over twice.” They do not anticipate having any future issues.

How these four children did this simply astounds me. These kids are no older than twelve, yet they have the power to start and end wars, shake the very foundation of the earth, move the heavens, and empty the seas. The previous elementals were surely not as powerful as they, despite all they are said to have done. Although honestly, no one can know – the previous generation died 150 years ago, and legends are the only tutors these budding Saviors will ever have.
