Prologue

The woman stumbles backward, her heart racing, as the unearthly figure continues its eerie sing-song chant. The dim glow of the streetlight casts long, distorted shadows, adding to the surreal atmosphere of the encounter. Pulling her revolver from her bag she empty it into the entity's chest. The bullets, though they find their mark, seem to have little effect on the otherworldly assailant.

As the creature advances, its movements are unnatural, an unsettling dance that defies the laws of the living. The distorted voice, a haunting blend of innocence and malevolence, echoes through the desolate alleyway.

“You’re found out of bed, and now you’ll be found dead.”

The woman, trapped between the encroaching darkness and the supernatural entity, realizes the futility of her desperate act.

Amidst the impending doom, the distant wail of a train's whistle crescendos. The ground beneath her feet trembles as if heralding the arrival of something both ominous and enigmatic. The creature, momentarily distracted, turns its elongated form toward the approaching sound.

With a final, desperate glance, the woman seizes the opportunity to flee, leaving behind the malevolent figure that continues its eerie incantation. The train, a metallic behemoth of the Eldritch Railway, materializes on the tracks, its doors invitingly open.

She sprints toward the platform, the rhythmic pounding of her boots now in harmony with the approaching train. The eerie creature's chilling song fades into the background as the woman crosses the threshold onto the platform, leaving the alleyway and its haunting presence behind.

She slides down against the wall, relieved to be back on the relatively safe train as the door closes behind her. Until a dark shadow is cast over her. She looks up and sees the familiar hulking frame of the conductor in his blue railway uniform, her disheveled appearance reflected in his polished brass buttons. His piercing red eyes look down at her from over his mustache. His deep gravelly voice rumbles, "Ticket." Gloved hand held out.

The woman, breathless and disheveled, realizes with a sinking feeling that she never had the chance to purchase a ticket during her frantic escape. As she meets the penetrating gaze of the conductor, panic surges within her. The gloved hand is held out expectantly, and she stammers, "I... I didn't get a chance to buy one. I was being chased..."

The conductor's red eyes intensify, his expression unreadable. The woman searches her bag in vain, finding no trace of the elusive ticket. The train's low hum seems to echo the pounding of her heart. In that tense moment, the conductor's voice rumbles, "Rules are rules."

The train barrels through the night, the woman's short scream cut short as the chain heads through a tunnel, disappearing from the pocket of reality. The echoes of her terror linger in the darkness, swallowed by the rhythmic clatter of wheels against the tracks. The tunnel becomes a fleeting refuge, concealing the macabre scene left behind.

In the confined space, the train hurtles forward, its metallic form casting an elongated shadow on the tunnel walls. The air within the carriage is thick with an otherworldly aura, and the soft hum of machinery adds an unsettling undertone to the journey. Outside the confines of the now empty train, the world transforms into a nightmarish tableau. The alleyway, now devoid of the woman and her pursuer, returns to an eerie stillness. The malevolent figure, denied its quarry, resumes its unsettling song in the desolate darkness. The echoes of the encounter reverberate through the fractured realms, whispers of the horrors that lie in wait along the eldritch tracks.

As the tunnel's end approaches, the train emerges into a new realm, leaving behind the haunting echoes of that fleeting moment in the alleyway. The woman, whose fate remains shrouded in uncertainty, becomes a nameless specter lost in the ever-expanding tapestry of the Eldritch Railway.
