Chapter 1 The Cradle Falls

Chapter 1 The Cradle Falls

Wind cut through a forest, as a massive moon rose up alighting the world. The moon rose from over the horizon covering 30% of the sky. Under the moon's gaze an egg fell from a tall tree. It fell dodging predatory insects and the large bats that fed upon them. Despite all odds it landed gently in a patch of pine needles.

The egg lay abandoned hidden under pine needles. The creature inside it struggled to escape the confinement. It moved, feeling its body was little more than a mass of jelly. It banged itself against the egg searching for a weakness. If there was a way to get free it would find it.

The sounds of crunching rang out quietly, as the egg was slowly broken. Birds of prey hooted, and insects covered the ground. Small amorphous tentacles broke through the egg. He had done it, the creature had successfully found a weakness in the egg and struck.

A being walked the floor of the ancient forest. He lowered his hands and picked up the egg. The egg was no larger than the head of a needle. This figure held it with care and certainty.

His voice was like a storm deep and rumbling. "You, are dead and you are alive. This is your second birth and as you have no mother, I name you Omega. It's a strong name. I'm certain you will fit it eventually." The figure said.

You are the first human to appear in the north." The being held the egg letting the warmth of his hands stir the creature within.

"My words are confusing aren't they. You know what happened. With your death, there is a choice. Will you cease to be, or live again? Obviously, you chose the latter." The egg cracked once more revealing a small slug like creature. A single eye blinked from the center mass of the creature.

"Noir is not a kind administrator, even for an AI. You are fated to die and be reborn. It is your fate to fight, those that threaten to consume this universe. Omega, you have little time to grow. Noir will help, but its up to you to take advantage of this world. This is your cradle a place designed to strengthen you. Noir gave me a quest to create such a space for you." The figure placed Omega back in his nest of pine. Various ants and spiders had caught his scent. It wouldn't be long before he would have to fight for his life.

"This is not cruelty, you chose your fate. To continue existing, you must prove your worth." The figure said, yet still he didn't leave the reborn human to his fate. Omega looked up, small feeble tentacles waving.

"Most of your kind will be reborn in far greater forms than you. Omega, it wasn't my intention for you to have such a weak form. I'm sorry." The figure held out his hand and a sword appeared in it.

The sword was a work of art. Hundreds of runic symbols covered the blade. The cross pommel was solid with a gem imbedded in the center. It faintly glowed in the moonlight. The man slammed the blade down deep in the soil. A small bubble of protection extended covering Omega and most of the tree.

"At least you have a safe place to rest." Omega stared at the figure. His one good eye was fuzzy, he couldn't see the figure clearly. The figure turned his back and left.

Omega, wrapped his tentacles around the egg shell and dissolved it. He wanted to speak to the figure. There was a need to let him know, he wouldn't regret the second chance at life. He raised himself on two tentacles. The wavy tendrils made poor legs.

While using his upper tentacles for balance he surveyed his new home. There was a counter at the edge of his vision. It would happen soon; the installation process was just beginning. As he looked around, certain objects glowed revealing descriptions. Since, the system wasn't fully installed he couldn't access the information. Noir was still synchronizing with his mind.

It was slow going picking up pieces of egg shell and digesting them. His body kind of soaked in the digested chunks of egg. His skin naturally excreted an acid.

Noir synchronization complete. Welcome to Noir, if you require assistance, say help and a member of the tech support staff will be with you. Warning those who wish to waste tech support's time will be fined. Begin update.

Vitality (Vit) 5  Bodily integrity and the health bar. The higher this stat the longer the user's life span and the more punishment they can take.

Dexterity (Dex) 1  Bodily flexibility and the health regeneration. The higher this stat the more stress your body can take before breaking. This stat determines whether a user will be a flexible sword or a hard but fragile blade of glass. Remember most sentients, monsters, and objects have the same parameters you do.

Endurance (End) 1  This stat determines what affect an environment has on the user. High endurance will allow a user to walk through flowing magma and consume the most inedible materials without any negative effect. Low endurance can make a gentle breeze feel like a monsoon.

Strength (Str) 1  Bodily power and the deciding factor of how much damage you can deal and how much your inventory can hold. Be warned a squirrel with 100 strength will not overpower a dragon with 1. Size is a crucial factor when determining who wins in a fight. A squirrel with 11 strength will easily defeat a squirrel with 8 strength.

Perception (Per) 1  In a nutshell perception is the ability to observe the environment and detect attackers and traps. High perception can allow a user to spot a rare bird flying through fog. A being with low perception will be quite blind to their environment, and unaware prey.

Intelligence (Int) 10  Power of the mind, the higher this stat the more skills and spells a user can obtain. With 10 intelligence the user can learn 1 skill or spell. When skills are mastered they no longer take up a spot.

Wisdom (Wis) 1  The mystical ability to drag mana from the connection between the soul and the mind. Large amounts of wisdom allow the user to master skills quickly. Though, intelligence powers spells, wisdom assists in spell casting and holds spells together.

Willpower (Wil) 3  Madness is a curse upon the sane. As an eldritch, you walk a fine line between the sane and insane. Willpower determines whether that line has the width of a grain of sand or a four lane.

Insight (Ins) 2  As an eldritch being you have higher insight than most. The ways of madness and high tier eldritch spells are far easier for you to decipher. A being with low insight will be fooled by illusions and have little to no defense against madness.

Charisma (Chr) 1  A charismatic fellow can charm a dragon out of his horde and fellow with low charisma can find themselves attacked at random by adventurers.

Luck (Luk) 1  A lucky person will find hidden treasure chests and receive rare drops. An unlucky person will always step in traps and fall for ambushes.

Do to your perk you have 12 stat points to spend. It is recommended that you invest a single point in each stat.

Omega flipped through his stats and added points, until he had only one left. He had a decision to make. After reading over the stat description, he came to a decision. One of the most beneficial stats early on is luck.

He felt his small body spasm. His eyeball rolled back in his head and he fell over. Small sparks of electricity rippled over his body. All four of his tentacles extended then stopped after they grew a few centimeters.

When the pain subsided, the eldritch slug flipped over and crawled closer to the sword. It poked and prodded at the blade only to receive a zap. The slug screeched, Omega had never been in such pain.

Would you like to learn the skill resist pain?

The tiny slug stood on its back tentacles and surveyed the area. Grass around the sword was tall. Whether it would save him from predators or not remains to be seen. He trudged out of the cover of the barrier.

The slug ran as quietly as it could be looking around. Massive insects passed over him, he could only see shadows as they passed by. He continued to run until he found something. It was a beetle. The beetle was hundreds of times his size. It had stopped moving and a spider had its fangs deep in its prey.

Omega slowly began to back track. Was he crazy, there was no way he could fight something like that. He was a slug. His body was soft weak, why did he journey out here? Just as he crept away the massive tongue of a frog slammed on the spider and pulled the creature away screeching.

Now was his chance. The spider had left its prey behind. Omega creeped up to the beetle. The creature was massive much larger than the spider. Yet, the spider easily took it down. Omega placed his for tentacles in the wound the spider's fangs made. He looked like nothing more than a little black speck atop a giant.

The insides of the wound dissolved and some of the nutrients flowed through his skin.

His stomach emptied, and it felt like he could continue eating. Omega put the two points in perception. His view of the world changed in an instant. He could see the bats over heat flying and catching mosquitos, he could see the frogs laying in wait to catch the next spider, and he could see the spiders waiting to catch him.

Omega did the only thing he could. He kept eating, and began to lodge himself in the beetle.

With six stat points, Omega had a decision to make. Would he continue to increase perception, or would he invest in other stats? His body had grown a lot after the last couple of levels. He was now as large as a section of one of the beetle's legs. He would surely grow larger. His four tentacles were working overtime to digest all the beetle he could.

He waited a few minutes thinking over his options. If he didn't choose soon, he would die. The spiders would get him, or the frogs would when he became too large. He needed to get out of site and away from the predators. The only problem was how. He felt a mighty impact and then a sudden jerk.

The beetle was squeezed from all sides and packed into a squishy sac. Did something just eat the beetle? He was freaking out and stress eating. He quickly went from level five to level ten. Most of the beetle's insides were gone. The shell of the beetle was cracking in places. The edge of his tentacles was burning. He placed ten points in intelligence. He needed to think. If he didn't do something, he would die.

New skill

Resist low grade acid lv1  1% less damage from acid.

That's right, he put ten points in intelligence, so he has a second skill slot. As he continued to eat his health regenerated and his wounds from the acid healed. He took the equivalent of a breath and shoved his two of his tentacles in the frog's stomach acid.

He shrieked out and thrashed devouring parts of the beetle before the frog could.

He continued to eat, and he healed, and he burned from the acids. Parts of his tentacles were broken down and he lost sensation. As he ate that sensation returned as his legs grew further into the acid. Omega was torturing himself to save himself. This sadistic system put him in a place where he had a small window of survival. It tricked him into thinking this world was fair.

It was getting slower. The acid melted through his body more slowly now. More pressure was packed down on top of him. He needed to survive, so he invested 8 points in endurance. If anything could help him survive in hostile conditions, it would be endurance.

He slammed another ten points in intelligence. It was a roll of the dice. Either he would get a new skill for it or die here. He waited, as he fed off the last of the beetle, if he didn't get anything useful this would be it, Omega would die here before he ever really lived his new life.

Resist Low Grade Acid lv50

Resist pain lv12

After all this time his pain resistance hadn't increased much at all. He was out of food. Now, was the slow decline, he would get devoured slowly by the frog. The shell was crushed further by the stomach and squeezed through a tube.

The shell was crushed around his body and was sinking down through the frog's small intestine. Powerful muscles squeezed around the shell slowly moving him. The acids spilled in burning him further there was no food to help him recover.

He eased his lower tentacles into the shell and the hole closed. Omega was stuck with the rest of the acid. Slowly his eye closed, soon he would run out of what little air he had left in the confines of the shell or the acid still burning through his lower tentacles would burn up the rest of his health.

His health stopped decreasing after an hour and his health increased by 15 points. The acid had stopped burning his lower extremities and the hole in the shell was folded over keeping more acid from burning him. Only the hard carapace of the beetle saved him from the acids outside.

The air rushed around him as muscles squeezed his beetle hid away out of the frog. He was quickly deposited on a toad stool. Omega felt a displacement of air as the frog jumped. Slowly, he opened the hatch and crawled out of the beetle.

He had gone from a few feet out of safety to a cove of mushrooms. After looking around to make sure its safe, he began to crawl down the mushroom. At the bottom, he found several beetle shells among other insects. The bones of frogs also littered the area. Whatever type of frog snagged him ate its own kind.

After looking around he knew there would be more frogs. This place was a dumping ground. He looked at the frog bones that covered the ground. If he could digest the bones, maybe that would give him a better chance against the frog. Before that he needed to raise his HP. Looking around, the only thing to eat around here was discarded frog meals and shrooms. The massive shroom had a red top with white specks.

Most things in nature that had a shiny color was poisonous. Omega grabbed ahold of the side of the red top and let his acid secrete from his tentacles. Drops of his acid fell on the shroom melting away at it and Omega absorbed the nutrients. For an hour he clung to the shroom and consumed it.

More of the shroom vanished the nutrients absorbed by his skin. He started to see things. The various mushrooms gained faces and began to talk in squeaks. Omega had no ears and couldn't silence them. Then they started laughing and the moon began to speak.

"This is the land forever night. Where hunger leads to might and the foolish are reborn. Take head and know this is your fate. You are in the land of forever night." r moon smiled and laughed as it spoke its nonsense. "Jump and fly maybe you will touch the sky." Omega launched himself off the shroom and crashed to the ground.

Suddenly, the shrooms looked like candy. Omega leapt at the shroom and began to dissolve and consume the shroom in earnest. More of the shroom was consumed as he continued to level up and get larger.

The high wore off sometime in the night. He began to dance in a world of flames just before the moon rose again. In this world there was no sun only various moons. This world was always shielded from direct sunlight.

He continued to eat. His resistance to the shrooms poison was at 99%, if he continued to eat he would gain complete immunity. Another couple of bites and the notification appeared.

Resist low grade poison lv 100  100% immunity to low grade poison.

New trait

Poisonous low grade +1 poison damage from skin contact

HIs body began to secrete a small amount of poison and he thought that was awesome. The next time something ate him, he could poison them. The slightly larger Eldritch slug made his way to the next in a long line of mushrooms. He paused at one of the only two he recognized. A small unassuming white capped mushroom was the destroying angel. If the other was just a low grade +1 damage, then this one would be really dangerous.

He took a look and noticed the mountain of dead ants and his fellow slugs. Omega rubbed his tentacles together at the delicacy before him. If he ate the destroying angel directly he would most defiantly die. If he breaks his teeth on the failures, then there was a chance for him to gain immunity.

Omega crawled over to the nearest ant and saw it was still struggling with the poison. Omega lifted his tentacle and wrapped it under the ant's head. He began to apply acid to the struggling creature.
