Chapter 15: Fractured Paths

Chapter 15: Fractured Paths

The night lingered heavy over the campsite, the faint glow of dawn only beginning to creep over the horizon. The creature's blood, an oily, glistening black, pooled beneath its broken body, staining the earth in unnatural hues. Evan held the smaller Anomalous Core Fragment, its faint blue glow barely illuminating his face.

“Item Acquired: Minor Anomalous Core Fragment.” “Core Assimilation Available. Proceed? Y/N.”

The system’s prompt hovered in his vision. Assimilation? He hesitated. The first fragment had been intriguing, but this one felt... different. Its energy was unstable, like a beating heart struggling to maintain rhythm.

“What is that?” Claire’s voice snapped him from his thoughts.

Evan quickly pocketed the fragment, masking his unease. “Just something it was carrying. Maybe it explains what these things are.”

Claire gave him a hard look, but whatever questions she had, she kept to herself.

By sunrise, the group was packed and moving again, their pace slower than usual. The fight had drained them, and the weight of what they had encountered lingered in the air like a storm cloud.

“We can’t keep doing this,” Kara said, her voice breaking the silence.

“Doing what?” Jake asked, his tone weary.

“Fighting. Running. Waiting for the next nightmare to jump out at us.” Kara gestured at the wasteland around them. “There’s no end to this. No safe place.”

“There’s no choice,” Claire said, her voice steely. “We keep moving, or we die.”

“But to where?” Kara demanded. “We don’t even know what we’re looking for!”

“Answers,” Evan said softly, his gaze fixed on the horizon. The group fell into silence again, Kara’s frustration echoing unspoken in all of them.

By midday, they reached a wide ravine cutting through the wasteland. The edges crumbled dangerously underfoot, and the drop below was obscured by thick mist.

“Looks like we’re going around,” Lila said, peering over the edge.

Claire scanned the area, her eyes narrowing. “No. We go across.”

“Across?” Jake echoed. “You’re kidding, right?”

Claire pointed to a narrow metal bridge spanning the ravine, its surface rusted and uneven.

“That thing doesn’t look like it could hold a squirrel, let alone all of us,” Jake argued.

“It’s our best option,” Claire replied. “The longer we stay out here, the more vulnerable we are.”

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

The group approached the bridge cautiously. Evan felt the system buzz faintly, its presence a constant hum in the back of his mind.

“Environmental Hazard Detected: Structural Integrity Low.”

“Great,” Evan muttered under his breath.

“I’ll go first,” Claire said, stepping onto the bridge. It creaked ominously but held as she moved forward. One by one, the group followed, their steps slow and deliberate. Evan brought up the rear, his grip tight on his crowbar.

Halfway across, the bridge groaned loudly, and the rusted supports began to buckle.

“Move! Now!” Claire shouted, her voice cutting through the rising panic.

They broke into a run, the bridge swaying dangerously beneath them. Evan’s heart pounded as the structure gave way behind him, each step a gamble.

Evan leaped the last few feet as the bridge collapsed entirely, landing hard on the other side. He rolled to his feet, breathing heavily as the sound of twisted metal crashing into the ravine echoed around them.

“That was close,” Jake said, his voice shaky.

“Too close,” Kara muttered, brushing dust off her clothes.

Claire scanned the horizon. “We keep moving. No time to rest.”

Jake groaned. “You’re relentless, you know that?”

Claire didn’t respond, her focus already on the path ahead.

By late afternoon, they stumbled upon a crumbling building partially buried in the earth. The faded remnants of a sign above the entrance read: “Facility 17-B.” “This place looks abandoned,” Lila said, peering into the dark interior.

“Abandoned doesn’t mean safe,” Claire replied, motioning for the group to stay alert. They entered cautiously, their weapons drawn. The interior was cold and damp, the walls lined with rusted metal shelves and broken equipment.

“Looks like some kind of lab,” Kara observed, her voice echoing in the empty space.

Evan felt the system buzz sharply as they moved deeper into the building.

“Anomalous Energy Signature Detected.”

“This place isn’t as empty as it looks,” Evan murmured.

Claire shot him a glance. “What do you mean?”

“Just... a feeling,” he said, evading the question.

They found the source of the anomaly in a locked room at the back of the facility. The door was heavy and reinforced, its surface covered in strange symbols that glowed faintly in the dim light.

“What is this?” Jake asked, running a hand over the markings. “Something we probably shouldn’t mess with,” Kara said, taking a step back.

Evan felt the system react strongly, its presence almost overwhelming.

“Access Protocol Engaged. Override Available. Proceed? Y/N.”

The group exchanged uncertain glances.

“Do we open it?” Lila asked hesitantly.

“We have to,” Claire said firmly.

Evan hesitated, then nodded. “Let me handle it.”

He reached out, his hand brushing the symbols. The system buzzed, and the markings flared brightly before fading. The door creaked open, revealing a chamber bathed in a faint blue glow. At the center of the room stood a pedestal, upon which rested a larger, more vibrant Anomalous Core Fragment. Its energy pulsed steadily, filling the room with an almost tangible presence.

Evan stepped forward, the system’s voice filling his mind.

“Core Identified: Catalyst-Class Anomalous Fragment. Potential Unlocked Upon Integration.”

“What is it?” Claire asked, her voice tinged with awe.

“It’s connected to everything,” Evan said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Before anyone could react, the building shook violently. The group staggered as a deafening roar echoed through the facility.

“We’ve got company!” Jake shouted, drawing his pistol.

The chamber’s walls began to crack, and from the shadows emerged a massive, grotesque creature. Its body was a patchwork of flesh and metal, its eyes glowing with a malevolent red light. “Another experiment,” Claire said grimly, raising her crossbow.

Evan tightened his grip on the crowbar, the system’s directives flooding his vision.

“Threat Level: High.” “New Objective: Protect the Catalyst Fragment.”

“Looks like we’ve got no choice,” Evan muttered, stepping forward.
