Messages in the Flames

Messages in the Flames

With that, Solaris began to dissipate, the intense heat and light gradually fading. Elyan watched in awe as the fire spirit disappeared, leaving behind a lingering warmth in the air. The encounter had left him with more questions than answers.

Later in the evening, before having his dinner, Elyan tried to recreate the flame spells that the fire spirit had shown him before Solaris manifested himself through the fire spirit.

The lack of natural light, aside from the moonlight that night, meant Elyan had to be careful in producing the quantities of the orbs. After all, the village of Eldergrove was not far away. Producing too many orbs could attract the attention of the villagers, who might come to investigate.

This should have been an ideal outcome for Elyan, but he couldn't help but play it safe. He didn't want to disregard the advice and orders of the village elders, especially if it might affect the entire village.

Elyan continued practicing until he was nearly out of mana. That night, Zenith only observed Elyan's training from the cave entrance. After what had happened, he thought it best to give Elyan some space.

The next day, right after Elyan finished processing his morning hunt, Zenith began to explain the next part of their training: communication spells. While Elyan was still cleaning his knife, not wanting to waste any more time, Zenith began his lecture.

"Let's start with the basics. The most common version of a communication spell is through the use of Sound magic, which is derived from 'Resonance,' a subset or specialization of air magic. Sound waves travel through the air as vibrations.

Practitioners of air magic can harness the element of Resonance to manipulate sound waves, creating spells that focus on acoustics, communication, or even sonic attacks."

The explanation made Elyan stop cleaning his knife and stare at Zenith. "Um... Zenith... You haven't taught me air magic yet, so how am I going to perform a communication spell?"

"Yes, but like I said, communication is a subset of air magic. The orthodox way of learning Resonance magic is by mastering air magic first and then building a solid foundation in sound magic. But it's different for you because you have me as your teacher." Zenith puffed out his chest, feeling proud of himself.

"You just need to understand the concept or have a grasp of what actually happens when you use a communication spell. Think of it as sending a message through the wind. In our world, the air is alive with invisible currents of mana, much like a river carries water.

When we use Resonance magic, we're tapping into these currents to carry our voice to someone far away. Imagine you're standing on a mountaintop, and you shout down to a friend in the valley below.

The wind carries your voice, but if you're not careful, it can be distorted or lost. With this spell, we're harnessing a special kind of air-type mana—one that listens and carries our exact words and feelings directly to the person we want to reach.

To cast the spell, first, you need to concentrate on the person you're sending the message to, like aiming an arrow. Picture them and focus on the connection you have with them, like a thread made of mana that links you together.

Then, you speak your message into the mana, letting your emotions flow with the words. The spell catches these words and emotions, wrapping them in a gentle breeze and sending them swiftly to the other person.

Think of it like using a magical bird to deliver a message—except this bird is made of air and sound, and it can't be seen. The clearer your intention and the stronger your focus, the better the spell will work.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

So, it's not just about speaking; it's about channeling your energy and intent through the air. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel, just like learning to control a sword or cast a fireball."

The long explanation and the complexity of the spell made Elyan feel anxious. He understood the concept but couldn't fathom the level of control and focus needed to apply it in practice. But he kept reminding himself that he needed to be stronger and that worrying wouldn't do him any good. He stored his knife in his makeshift scabbard while running Zenith's lecture in his head over and over again.

This behavior was something Zenith was accustomed to. It was what made him confident in giving Elyan a long and detailed explanation of a concept despite his age. This was how Elyan behaved when he tried to make sense of something he didn't understand immediately.

Elyan lifted his head, resting both his hands on his hips. Staring at the sky and observing the foliage carried by the wind, Elyan started to grasp the concept of Resonance magic.

Noticing Elyan raising his eyebrows, followed by his slightly open mouth, Zenith felt confident that Elyan finally understood what he'd been teaching him. Elyan looked down at his hands. "Zenith, is it possible to combine a different spell with a communication spell?

I was thinking, what if I combine the flame orb with the message encased in it and send it to the village at night? With that, everyone in Eldergrove will not be able to ignore it, and once they gather around the orbs, I can send my message to them. What do you think?"

"Bahahahaha! As expected!" Zenith let out a louder laugh than before. "Yes! I was planning to teach you that after seeing the whole performance by Solaris's underling. I already have a plan in mind on how to do it."

"Really? I thought you said you were going to teach me earth magic? To which I assumed there was a way to send a message to the village with an earth spell," Elyan said, raising an eyebrow, questioning Zenith.

"Well, I scratched that plan after witnessing the hundred orbs. The initial plan was to teach you how to make a glass bottle. Write a message, put it inside the bottle, and send it through the river. Hehe," chuckled Zenith as he scratched the back of his head.

"Make a glass bottle?? Don't we have to make lots of them to be certain that at least several villagers receive it?" Elyan asked.

"Yes, but we don't have to do that now, so there's nothing to worry about. Now, now, Elyan boy, let me explain how it works." Zenith took a step back to create some space for himself.

"The idea is to use the fire orbs as messengers, each carrying a piece of the message. When the communication spell is cast, the sender conjures a spherical fireball, and from it, countless small orbs of flame emerge.

Each orb can represent a word, emotion, or even an image, all wrapped in the essence of Resonance magic. You have to channel both fire and Resonance magic to create the flame orbs for this, shaping a central fireball. The fire spirit's influence helps manifest these orbs, imbuing them with the caster's message.

As the orbs are formed, you infuse them with your voice and intent. Each orb could be tuned to different frequencies of Resonance magic, carrying different parts of the message. The orbs then scatter, traveling through the air to find the intended recipient—in your case, recipients. Upon arrival, they merge back into a coherent message, with each orb releasing its part of the communication.

The recipient might see the orbs as they arrive, gather around them, and then merge into a single, comprehensible message. This could be a voice, a vision, or even a series of emotional impressions.

This combined spell would require a high level of mastery in both fire and Resonance magic. You need to control the fire without letting it become destructive and ensure the Resonance aspect accurately encodes the message.

This spell would also consume a significant amount of mana, especially if the message is long or emotionally charged. You might need to be well-rested or draw energy from the environment.

Another thing we need to be careful about is that combining elements can sometimes lead to interference. You must be precise in your intent and control, ensuring the fire element does not distort the Resonance signals.

Of course, this will not be a perfect spell yet, so there is a risk that the message could be intercepted or that the fire element could react unpredictably to environmental conditions.

You and the villagers must also be attuned to both elements to receive and understand the message fully, which is not a problem because we can create the environment for that to happen." Zenith stopped his back-and-forth pacing and turned to Elyan. "Do you have any questions?"

"Yes," Elyan raised his right hand. "How do we solve the problem with mana?"

"Ah! There is a solution for that. Summon several fire spirits to help you with creating the orbs, and I will also supply you with a little bit of my mana," replied Zenith.
