The Prologue

“Sir, the last of our… heroes been sent to their realms!”

The short, portly deity glanced over at the portals with a disinterested look, watching the last few balls of light float through them. Each of these balls of light were souls, being transferred to realms in need. They came in pairs, one taking the role of savior and the other a scourge, hopefully. The cases where the heroes teamed up did not turn out as well as they sounded. Out of the corner of his eye, the deity watched the last soul float through, seemingly without a partner.

“Francis, that last portal seemed to only have one soul float through it, are you sure it was sent in a pair?” the stout deity inquired.

“Quite positive, sir!” as the smaller assistant said this, he glanced down at his clipboard, scanning the list. His eyes darted about the page, as a small look of horror crossed his face, which he quickly tried to hid behind his façade of a good mood.

“All right Francis, good on ya, this is why you’ve lasted the longest out of all the assistants I’ve had. You always do things right” The deity proclaimed this as he leaned back in his armchair, resting his feet on his desk.

“Y-Yeah, sir!” As Francis responded, he retreated to his cubicle.

Francis plopped down in his chair, resting his forehead on his arms. He had forgotten one. A hero from Realm 8976, or as the inhabitants called it, Earth. Most heroes came from there, as they seemed to have pretty advanced technology whilst also having an abundance of heroes with good demeanors. As for this forgotten hero, he was a bit of an oddball. He had both good and bad tendencies, so he was sort of their test for this new world. Alas, only his counterpart was sent. Luckily, in the part of the world where the forgotten hero lived, it was night. He had one night to fix this. Unfortunately, as these thoughts were crossing his mind, the tech department was giving the heroes the system that made them heroes. This basically uncontrolled growth was what allowed the heroes to save the world or destroy it. In reality, this whole fling is like a reality show for the gods, with fairly disposable planets being chosen as the targets. (Think Survivor but cooler and your mom can’t watch it. Unless your mom is a god, in which case, go save the world or something, you lazy bum!)

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Francis, done having his mini panic attack, got up and put on his happy face again, and went to the tech department. There, he received the bad news. It was too late, the hero system was in place. Francis once again let his façade down, this time running to his cubicle again. Francis was soooooo going to get fired. Heroes weren’t allowed on earth anymore! It was a mistake the first time, and the second time, and the third time, and… well, a lot of times. Lots of gods did it, basically when they got bored. When Zeus was leader he did it, the one that thought he should just be called God did it once, that one weird Xenu guy did it. (That was a scientology joke, if there are scientologists reading this, I’m sorry and do you need help escaping Hubbard’s basement?) Nonetheless, Francis would fix this, he would do something that they haven’t done in a while, because they haven’t had any real heroes of actual importance in a while. He would pilot the tutorial system.

A young man woke up in his apartment. He just had the weirdest dream. He dreamt that he sorta… died? And then he came back again, but it was still weird. Apparently God is a short fat dude, that’s all he really remembered.
