Chapter 17 - Eight Legged Frecks and a Chest

Chapter 17 - Eight Legged Frecks and a Chest

The spider was a light brown color and 4 feet tall with each of its legs almost as long. Four – relatively small, eyes, were in a 2x2 formation and with two larger eyes on each side.

The spider turned around and pointed its abdomen toward him and shot out a thin web, hoping to immobilize him in secret, but Rae had seen and heard him with his enhanced senses.

The web that was shot out was fast, but Rae was faster. He leaped and rolled to the side, dodging it with sword and torch still in hand.

The spider was surprised at its missed shot.

It crawled to the side of the wall and began shooting more webs from the dark, believing Rae had no idea where it was.

Rae kept dodging for another thirty seconds before he realized this couldn’t continue.

‘Is this thing going to come down anytime soon? If I weren’t being watched, with my stats and abilities, knocking it down and killing it would be much simpler,’ he grumbled.

But then he thought it about it some more and realized he should take it seriously. Although he killed the many times stronger, Dire Boar, it was only because it was weakened by Yva. He also did not want to waste this time to gain battle experience by developing a bad habit of looking down on his opponents. It was an easy way to die.

After another ten seconds of incessant web shooting, the spider stopped.

‘Is it bored now?’ thought Rae.

The spider began crawling to the cavern walls on the left side and pointed its mandibles at Rae. Rae could see green particles gathering in front of its mandibles.

Rae could see where this was going and he leaped to the side with haste.

A ball of green liquid flew by him and splattered where he was previously.

‘More ranged attacks?! How long is it going to keep this up?’

Rae appraised its status again.

‘It’s running out of Mana.’ He decided to stall until it was finished shooting. Afterward, it would probably come in for a melee fight. That’s when he would take it down.

While Rae kept dodging, the spider lost mana with each shot and kept crawling down the wall for an easier shot on Rae. When it finally ran out of Mana and Rae was still standing, it let out a battle cry. Its fangs extended from its large mandibles, ready to devour Rae.

Loud clicking sounds could be heard as each of its legs charged toward Rae. Rae also felt a bit of blood rush from the previous monotony and took a stance.

He waited for the rushing spider while he stared it down. The clicking sound made by the spider each time it slammed its legs in a stampede toward him, sped up his heartbeat.

After the spider closed in at about 15 feet, Rae inhaled and exhaled deeply and gripped his steel sword with both hands even tighter.

When the spider came in at 10 feet, it lunged at Rae.

Waiting for this exact moment, Rae activated「Thought Acceleration」.

The spider in mid-air slowed down while Rae became much faster. He calmly stepped to the side and sliced off all of its legs on one side.

The spider screamed in pain as it slammed into the ground. It began flailing around with the other half of its intact legs until Rae Dashed toward it and thrust his sword into its head. Ending its struggle.

‘Finally got it,’ he thought in exhaustion. Running around and dodging the spider's attacks for minutes really tired him out mentally.

After checking his surroundings for any other creatures, he deactivated 「Thought Acceleration」and continued down the large passage.

Some distance away, Selena, Landis, and Yva observed the fight.

“Selena, what do you think?” asked Landis. He had his own thoughts but wanted to hear his daughter’s input first.

“At first, despite hearing about Rae’s stats at the auction, I thought he was a bit unlucky to have run into a Giant Spider just as he entered since he has no experience, but…”

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

“But?” inquired Landis.

“He handled it extremely well. Methodically, even,” responded Selena, and elaborated further. “He realized he was never going to be able to kill the spider while it was attached to the ceiling, so he waited for it to run out of Mana so it would come down and enter a brawl with him. He then calmly crippled and executed it. Although it sounds obvious to do, for a recently born and not evolved goblin to think that far ahead, it’s… impressive,” she admitted.

“Hmm, I had the same thoughts. A normal goblin – even a hobgoblin or other green skins, would have charged in and swung wildly. But I think you’re forgetting something, Selena,” Landis said sternly.

“What?” she asked in surprise. She thought she had covered all of what happened.

“The fact he managed to dodge the web shot in almost pitch darkness. The spider came in closer, thinking it was unnoticed. Rae dodged it as if he knew it was there.”

Selena thought about it for a second and realized that her father was right. How did Rae realize the spider was there with his skills?

“Is it possible that he lied about his skills?” she asked.

“That shouldn’t be the case. The bonding spell is specifically made for green skins to be obedient. It could have just been his natural abilities. Let’s observe him longer. I’m starting to think we got our money’s worth,” Landis said happily.

Yva watched silently as the father and daughter discussed Rae. She was not surprised at Rae’s abnormal abilities as a goblin. He had killed the Dire Boar in the forest that was many times stronger than the spider.

As Rae was walking, he came across two doors. The two doors were grey in color with a black spider carved into each of them.

‘Which one should I go through?’

While Rae was thinking, the other three caught up with him.

Rae turned to Landis and asked, “Master, which door should we pick?”

“We’re following your lead so it’s up to you. Also, don’t call me master.” Landis pointed to Selena. “She is. Just call me ‘Captain’.”

Rae nodded his head. “Yes, Captain.”

Landis smiled. “Good.”

Since Landis wouldn’t help him, presumably Selena, as well, he directed his gaze back to the doors while sending a message to Yva.

“Any advice on which door I should pick in dungeons?”

“There’s really no advice to give in this sort of situation. Just have to rely on your luck,” Yva said without a care.

‘”Rely on your luck,” she says.’ Rae sighed inwardly. ‘Well I’m right-handed, so right it is.’ Rae walked up to the right door and pushed it open. The door creaked heavily as it was forced to move.

Rae entered the room with the group following him. The door shut and locked when the last person entered.

Rae took a few steps before feeling the presence of dozens of creatures. ‘”Luck,” she said…”

He focused his eyesight in front of him and saw brown spiders, much like the one he fought earlier except they were about the size of puppies, rushing toward him.

‘Appraise!’

‘Luckily, it seems like they’re the predecessor species of the one I fought before. They don’t have any ranged abilities except their threads, but they’re much weaker and not as smart to utilize that to their advantage.’

After appraising them, he focused his attention on the spiders and noticed that they were coming at him in an upside down ‘U’ formation. 'Why are they only coming for me?' He then thought about it and determined that the spiders subconsciously knew they couldn’t deal with the group behind him, so focused their attention on him.

Looking at the Legion of Legs, he figured it would not be a good idea to be surrounded by so many of them so activated「Thought Acceleration」and ran to the side that looked thinnest.

When he got closer, a spider jumped at him and he slashed it down the middle, cutting it half.

Rae kept running and cutting his way toward the middle while spiders jumped at him, and he eventually received several notifications.

While he was distracted for an instant, a spider leaped onto his back and sunk its fangs into him, injecting him with poison.

‘Keep running!’ With his「Pain Resistance」being relatively high, the bite felt like a pinch, so he kept running so he wouldn’t become surrounded and mauled.

He took his torch and stabbed it behind himself, into the spider that latched itself onto him, causing it to screech and let go.

After several minutes, he managed to take out all of the spiders, receiving more notifications.

‘I could have died if I was facing a stronger enemy from that last pop-up, you damn system!’ After a few seconds of silence, he realized he was speaking to an inanimate supernatural system and decided to put it behind him. ‘It was really my fault anyway. I need to focus more in battle. A mistake like distraction could have cost me my life,’ he thought.

After reprimanding himself, he looked at the corpses of all the spiders he killed, splattered across the room. As he looked around, he noticed two things that were not in the room when he first entered. One of which made him giddy with excitement.

First: another grey door on the opposite side of the one he entered from, but this one had a black spider with a white skull on its abdomen.

Second: a large golden chest in the middle of the room.
