Chapter 1

Do the Wave!

-------------------------------

In the red bathwater, something happens.

In a sphere of water, roughly half a meter wide in diameter, all of the blood drifts towards its center, forming a small globule of blood. This drop of blood solidifies, before turning very faint red as it appears to become a small bead of glass. The bead floats in the small ball of water, which continuously grows larger, the water continuing to purify itself as the blood flows to the bead in its center.

The undead eating the freshly deceased body suddenly trembles, its skin splitting and sloughing off as its muscles become denser and its eyes become clearer. More undead pile into the bathroom, a few biting at the body and the rest licking at the skin that was shed by the stronger zombie.

The bead flashes as some of the skin lands on it, and the bathwater seems to pull the dead body in, the zombies following. However, upon entering the bathwater, their bodies rapidly decompose before mixing with the water.

In mere minutes, all that is left in the room is the murky gray water.

Hours later, the water slowly rises over the edges of the tub, seeking freedom. There is but one thought on its mind.

Three days later, a group of twelve survivors are fleeing from the city on a bus. The sun is setting, and hordes of infected are slamming themselves into its sides and front without regards to the consequences.

"Dammit, Phil, I told you that they'd notice!"

"Whose fault is it that we thought that they couldn't see!" yells Phil.

"I swear they can't! There was a tall black one that was staring at us from that alleyway, though!"

"And you tell us NOW?!" screams Phil as he yanks the wheel to the left, turning out onto a side street as they approach a street full of empty cars. "Christ, Rich! One of these days you're going to get us all killed!"

"ENOUGH! Save the bickering for when we get out alive!" A pot-bellied Italian man knocks an infected off a window with a lead pipe to the forehead.

"Uh, guys! We've got a problem!" - Phil

"What now?!" shout half the survivors.

"Th-there's a wave approaching!" - Phil

"A wave?" asks Richard.

"W-w-water..." he mumbles, sweat pouring down the bridge of his nose as he nervously swallows.

About a hundred meters ahead, a wall of grayish water can be seen flowing towards them, swallowing everything up in its path.

And yet, all of the zombies near it are running away, a veritable horde splitting down each side street they find out of the path of said wave.

"Keep driving! If we stop now we'll be swarmed after the wave passes! Our only option is to go through it!" says a college student.

Everyone thinks all but half a second before agreeing with her. "Alright, but everyone buckle in and cover your heads!" shouts Phil, with an equal amount of fear and excitement. As long as they can just get through this...

The bus speeds up, plowing down the street as hundreds of undead filter into the side streets. If one were looking from above, they would see that the wave was over thirty meters long, filling the street from side to side and standing at around four meters high.

However, they would also see that there was absolutely no water behind it... and that it was moving slightly uphill.

Moments later, Phil ducked his head down behind the wheel and covered it with a hand, the glass at the front of the bus shattering and spraying backwards. A few of the survivors screamed as a few shards embedded themselves in the hands covering their heads and their side facing the front as they sat in a row that lined each side of the bus.

A split second later, it felt as if they were lifted into the air as the wave filled the bus with water before flowing out the back windows and the cracks at the bottom of the doors. Rich was thrown out, and the water that touched the other survivors' skin burned into it. The bus fell back down onto its wheels and continued driving.

Rich hit his head on the ground as the wall of water suddenly stopped moving, surrounding him in a bubble of air as he slowly sat up, not a single drop of gray water left on his skin. In a panic, he looked around, before attempting to stand up.

A large pseudopodia ("tentacle") shot out, stopping the motion. He cried out in fear and pain as the tentacle dissolved his clothes and burnt his skin with acid before he shied away from it, sitting back down.

"... ... Study," the water thought.

Tens of thousands of small tentacles shot out from the walls, their tips becoming thinner and thinner until they were as small as the tip of a needle.

Rich fainted immediately, before being stabbed awake, his body suspended by millions of fine-point needles and hooks which slowly disassembled his body from the tips of his hands and feet to the top of his head, leaving only his brain. The gray water slowly dissolved the gray matter. Soon after, the sea of gray ate a hole into the ground of the street and sank into the earth below, disappearing from sight.
