"Alright so where does this go?" A man in a red suit with a yellow tie said as he pointed at a giant wooden crate filled to the brim with "Sugar". A drug that mellows the user out and remove their headaches. It would be a perfect alternative to weed if it wasn't for the increased heart attack risk. Another Man walked up slowly to the box. He was wearing a simple velvet colored suit and was holding a glass of red wine, He had auburn hair that was shaved along with a trimmed beard. His name was Samuel Harris, the leader of a small time gang known as Order 34.
"Put it in storage and make sure to check the product." He said, taking another sip of the wine. Three men walked toward the box and using brute muscle, load the box onto a trolley cart and take it into the elevator. " So Mr. Harris, what the next step?" The same man in the red suit and yellow tie said to the wine-sipper.
"The next step, Dylan, is very simple, we going to pack the sugar into bags and sell them to the customers without the cops getting on our asses." Harris explained holding a card that said Bailey's Emporium of Sweets.
"It fucking blows that we couldn't get to the RPD first." Dylan fumed as he lit a cigarette.
"Patience, we get them to our side in due time." Harris poured himself more wine and walked over to the elevator. He pressed the button, and the elevator door opened.
"Oh and one last thing, make sure to watch out for a uninvited guest that makes a habit of disrupting everyone plans, not least of all mine, so far I been able to stay off her radar, but nonetheless, doesn't hurt to be too safe." He walked into the elevator and pressed the button to ascend to the top floor.
"Damnit, between her and That Laughing dipshit, shit can't ever go as planned." Dylan thought as he pulled out his phone and sent a mass text to all the goons.
"Watch out for Lady Luck, she might be paying us a visit. And while you at it, make sure The Jackal doesn't show his ass up here either."
He press send, but the text didn't send. He press send on the screen again, nothing, the same message still showing up.
Message not sent.
"God damnit, i just payed the bill, what the fu-oh fuck me up the ass." He stated as his eyes fell upon the woman now sitting in the chair not too far from him, her legs cross one over the other. A simple smile on her face. A beautiful carved Gaia mask hid her upper facial features, her lipstick a beautiful red. Long brunette hair that fell in drapes over her shoulders. She was wearing a long red trench coat, with green accents that Dylan could've sworn was glowing and red combat boots. But the real danger was that utility belt of her, no telling what she got in store for you.
"I hate it when that happen too." Said the mysterious woman.
"Is that so?" Dylan asked as he pulled his gun from his holster and pointed it at the lady.
She stand up and started walking towards the armed man. She shakes her head.
"Don't do it." She warned like a mother advising their child.
"Hey, fuck it, free payday for me!" Dylan pulled the trigger, nothing happen.
The woman sighed and without warning run up to Dylan and kicks the gun out of his hand. Dylan was caught off guard for a second before quickly putting some distance between himself and the heroine.
"Listen, just go home, you know what going to happen, right?" She said sympathetically to Dylan.
"Well this is a first." Dylan thought as he pondered what the hero had just told him. He was kinda glad it was her that came instead of the laughing dipshit, he would surely be dead by now. But not before hearing one of Jackal's puns. He cringed inwardly.
"Something along of the lines of everything go to shit, boss blames me, and i end up in an unmarked grave somewhere?" Dylan said, sighing.
The woman nodded sadly. Dylan rubbed the back of his head, he started to pace back and forth. Dylan couldn't shake this feeling he had about the mysterious heroine in front of him. Like he knew her personally but he can't focus on that now.
"Shit, you know that i can't just walk away, right?" Dylan said, exasperated. The one who was known to the city as Lady Luck nodded somberly.
"Yes, i do know, and nothing i say is going to change your mind." She said, knowing where this was going. She sometimes ask herself why does she even bother?
He threw a haymaker which she ducked under, she pop right back up and punched him straight in the mouth, causing him to stumble back, She took advantage of the lull in the battle by kicking him in the chest with all her force knocking him down to the ground. Dlyan cursed and got up. He ran towards her as if he was about to tackle her like a football player. But as soon as she prepared herself to dodge, as he got closed, he smiled and punched her straight in the stomach. An audible sound of pain came from her as he threw another punch which landed in her chest. She fell down on the ground and grabbed the gun that she kicked earlier. She pointed it straight above him and fired off a shot.
"Wait, i thought the gun was jam-" Was all Dylan could get out before a light fixture fell on his head knocking him out cold. She quickly check to make sure he was alright. She placed her fingers on his neck, she sighed in relief at his still beating pulse.
She got up slowly. She grabbed Dylan's phone out of his pocket.
"I truly despise this city." She thought to herself.
She looked around the area, there were maybe four or five chairs scattered around. There was one table set up, beer cans and burger wrappers covered the table. Lady Luck can smell the heavy smoke from earlier.
"This place is barely furnished, they were was probably planning on moving soon." Lady Luck thought as she took a hard look around the area. She looked at Dylan's phone again, She sends out a group text.
"Coming up, need to speak to the boss." She hit send. Lady Luck knew that the gangsters would know something is up. She was no fool and neither were the gangsters she was trying to take down. She went to the elevator and press the button. The elevator door opened and she pressed the emergency stop. She look up to see a entry shaft, She took out a blowtorch out of her coat and begin to cut around the square, within seven minutes, the metal grate fell on the elevator door with a thud. She took the metal grate and tossed it over to the room. She press floor twelve and The door closed. Lady Luck leapt up into the new hole she made and waited.
There was two guards that were standing in fornt of the office where their Boss was located. They were ordered to keep watch and made sure nothing get past them. They had their Uzis at the ready. They had just received a text message from Dylan but they know that it really one of the two vigilantes in Redemption. They were wearing white buttoned shirts and blue jeans. It was Casual Friday for the lower level grunts.
"Dylan was supposed to be there all night checking the product. Something up Kevin." The second guard said as he looked at his cracked phone.
"Yeah stay on your toes G." The first guard said to the other. He really feeling ready anxious and decided to roll one real quick. To calm his nerves.
"Seriously now?! Ugh you better pass that shit." G angrily told Kevin who nodded.
"So like I was saying, I'm thinking of moving back to Ultradam." Kevin said as he smoked a blunt.
"Ultradam is just Redemption, but even shitter, the gangs there don't even have cool names!" G spat out as he shskrd his head at the other guard's naivety.
"The fuck you talking about?" Kevin asked blowing out smoke.
"Look i don't care how much you hype it up, The Boyz is a fucking stupid name, sounds like something the 90s puked up!" G insulted. Kevin was pissed off because his younger brother was currently in The Boyz.
"The man who founded the group was a fan of Boys 2 Men, listen to some god-damn classic music you fucking uncultured swine." Kevin insulted.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
"Who the fuck names a gang after a R&B Group?" G argued back.
"Well-" Kevin try to reason with him but got cut off.
"Not only that, isn't that group just a front for a child-sex ring?" G continued as Kevin look at him in newfound horror.
"Wha-"
Before the argument can continue further, they heard the ding of the elevator door and both turns their guns and fire. Filling the empty elevator car with bullets, wasting plenty of money. There were two men on the floor of the elevator, both knocked unconscious and thankfully didn't get hit by the hail of gunfire.
"WAIT SHIT HOLD YOUR FIRE!" The first guard said as he looked at the empty elevator cart. they both cautiously approached the cart, both of them knowing full-well that this was a trap. They didn't go inside, and decided to wait, Their guns still pointed at the elevator. A single grenade dropped down into the elevator cart, both of the guards jump away form the cart, but no loud explosion could be heard. they both look back, Kevin stepped carefully and picked up the grenade much to the bafflement of G.
"Chill, it just a fak-" Kevin was interrupted as a thick smoke broke out form the grenade. The first guard put his shirt over his face and turned away as he heard a body dropped to the floor, he ran over to the office door. and pointed his gun at the smoke and fired again. He suddenly felt himself getting tired, he look down to see a tranquilizer dart sticking out of his leg.
"Goddamn-" He fell over easily.
Lady Luck sighed as she look at the two guards, she allowed herself some satisfaction at how much better she gotten at this, but how much satisfaction and pride can you really get when you had luck literally on your side? She held on to her tranquillizer gun as She walked over to the office and open the door slowly.
The room itself was barely lit, save for the lamp illuminating the young girl's face.
To say Lady Luck was surprised was like saying the sky is blue. There, right there in the chair that was supposed to be the leader of this Order, was actually a little girl. No more than eleven, by the looks of it.
"This could very well be a trap." Lady Luck thought to herself, her anger seething at the thought of any mobster using kids as bait. Maybe The Jackal had the right idea after all.
No she couldn't let herself think like that, So she decided to talk to the little child. Lady Luck smiled at the girl and the girl smiled back.
"Good, we started off friendly." She thought to herself as she approach a little closer. The girl had long auburn hair down her shoulders and soft eyes that was a unnatural purple. Now it might've been the lighting but Lady Luck could've swear that her eyes was glowing.
"Ok, kind of concerning but hopefully she doesn't have any unnatural power, or at the very least. She doesn't use that power against me." Lady Luck thought to herself as she decided to ask the child some questions. She a Demi-Human "At least that what people with powers are called by the government and news outlets." That what Lady Luck theorized.
"Hello there. What your name?" Lady Luck asked pleasantly. The girl responded back.
"Emily." The girl softly, smiling at the sight of this super-hero she heard so much about. She was very pretty and nice so far.
"How has your day been?" Lady Luck asked of her.
Emily was silent for a moment, yesterday was her birthday. That was the day she found out her father's secret, the real reason behind why her mother wasn't there.
"It was ok. Yesterday was my birthday. I'm eleven now. " Emily said softly
Lady Luck gasped in surprise.
"And i didn't bring you anything!" Lady Luck exclaimed dramatically as Emily laughs.
"Happy Birthday to you." Lady Luck sang happily as Emily felt better than she had been in the past few days.
"Happy Birthday, dear Emily." Lady Luck continued as Emily teared up a little bit at this.
She felt his presence behind her.
"Did you really think that I was going to let you leave here alive and take my daughter from me?" The man asked.
Lady Luck put her hands up and smile.
"No, but i do expect you to act with some hospitality ." She said quietly.
He looked over to see his daughter sitting in his chair like she always does when he away. He kept the gun out of view from his daughter and moved in closer to the heroine.
"Please, don't make a scene in front of her." He pleaded.
It caught her off guard how genuinely sincere he sounded.
"Of course, who do you think I am?" Lady Luck said quietly. The man nodded and back away from the heroine, still keeping the gun trained on her.
Lady Luck turn around slowly, blocking the view of the gun from the little girl.
"Daddy, what going on?" Emily said as she got off the chair and went over to the two.
"Emily stay where you are." He said calmly. Lady Luck turn back to the little girl.
"Everything is fine, me and your daddy was discussing about your birthday." She happily told the girl causing Emily to giggle.
"So how is this going to play out?" He asked of the heroine.
"With you being reasonable and turning yourself in. Please for the sake of your daughter." Lady luck told him seriously. The man look down at the ground for a second, a war of conflicting emotions raged within his head.
She could tell he was struggling so she decided to help him make the right decision, at least when it came to Emily.
"If you turn yourself in, you can get a plea bargain and get you and your daughter out of here. You're working with Bazook Wilson correct?" Lady Luck asked of Samuel. He steeled himself for what he was going to do.
"You want to get her far away from someone like that, correct?" Lady Luck pressed as Samuel bit his lip so hard it bled.
"You certainly done your homework haven't you Ms. Luck? Emily, honey?" He called out to his daughter who was watching with fascination.
"Yes dad?"
"Please step out for a second, me and Ms. Luck have some adult business we need to discuss." He told his daughter sweetly.
Emily had a feeling of what was really going on. She didn't want neither her father or Lady Luck to get hurt. She didn't know much but she did know that as long as she was in the room, nothing bad would happen.
"But daddy, I want to stay here. I promise i won't move an inch!" The daughter pleaded, hoping that her father would listen to her.
"I'm sorry Emily but we about to discuss grown folk business. It be pretty boring." Lady Luck said to her, Samuel was a little surprised that the heroine was willing to back him up. Not that he was complaining.
"But i promise i will be very good! I won't talk or anything!' Emily again pleaded with the two, hoping they would agree. Samuel saw the tranquillizer gun that Lady Luck was holding, if he could get a hold of that he could take out the hero without traumatizing Emily too much.
He went for it. Very big mistake. She sidestepped him easily and caused him to fall over. His gun going off by accident in the spilt-second confusion, He screamed out in pain as he realize he shot himself in the shoulder like a complete and utter dumbass.
Everything went so wrong so quickly.
Lady Luck stood in the center of a raging inferno. She felt her muscles seized up as the heat was unbearable. She was thrown back to when she was a child. Her panicking and trying not to pass out from the smoke inhalation. Her parents long gone.
She gripped her amulet underneath her shirt. A gift from her parents which became their parting gift. She slowly made her way through the fire, All she could hear was the screams and cries of her parents. Tears ran down her face as she continue her path forward, she needed to find Emily and save her and her father too.
"Please! Stay away!" Emily told the heroine as the fires grew brighter, hurting Lady Luck's eyes as she squinted.
"Emily? It alright! Tell me where you are!" Lady Luck called out desperately to the young girl.
"Please miss! I don't want you or my father to get hurt! Just leave us alone!" Emily pleaded with the hero, hoping that she will listen to reason.
"We won't get hurt, i promise you." Lady Luck told her in a effort to calm her down.
The fire begin to burn brighter, she felt the rising heat on her skin. Lady Luck broke out in a sweat.
"Emily?!" She asked again.
The girl didn't respond. She kept her eyes closed, her father right besides her, knocked out by the sudden burst of energy that his precious daughter brought forth. His blood pooling around her shoes that she got for her birthday. They light up in the dark, isn't that neat?
Lady Luck steeled herself and continued to walk through the blazing fire. Eventually she found her, in a cradle position resting by her father. Tears streaming down her face.
She was surprised when she felt herself enveloped in a warm hug. She opened her eyes to see Lady Luck who was hugging her.
"It's alright. It ok."
Emily felt herself calm down.
"Breathe Emily. Take a deep breath."
Emily did as she was told.
Slowly but surely the flames begin to flicker and dim. And just as quickly the fire came into existence it was erased. Lady Luck patted Emily's back who begin to cry into her chest.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
"Shhh...it alright Emily. You did nothing wrong." She said, her intuition about her being a Demi-Human now validated. She look around and saw no damage to the office, so her best guess is that she could make people see their worst fears and bring them into reality?
"That a dangerous power. I don't know if I'm equipped to train her." She thought wearily.
"But my father...."
Lady Luck stopped hugging her and gave her a small smile.
"Let fix him up then." She said.
She pulled out a first aid kit she keeps in her trench coat for situations such as these.
Soon the father was patched up. the bullet went straight through. Thankfully she had her phone on her so she distracted Emily with a game about being a traveler in a unknown world filled with beautiful people that could kill you in an instant if they really wanted to for the more gory parts of healing her father.
He awoke to Lady Luck smiling at him, he quickly looks over to his daughter who rushed over and hugged him gently as Lady Luck advised her beforehand not to put too much pressure on him.
"The fire...There was fire everywhere?" He said as he look around and saw his office just fine. Aside the pool of blood on the floor but he can mop that up.
He hugged his daughter, the memories flooding back.
"You saved my life? But why?" He questioned.
Lady Luck gave the father a wry smile.
"Because as long as I'm around. I want to save everyone I can. That includes people like you too." Lady Luck said to Samuel who was completely surprised at this.
"Now Samuel, listen to me. You need to get far away from here. Take your daughter with you to someplace that Bazook can't touch. I suggest Glory. Emily here is a demi-human, maybe the Champions could try and train her. Either way you and your daughter will be safe from him." She advised Samuel who nodded.
She walked away.
"WAIT!" Samuel yelled out.
Lady Luck stopped and turned around.
"Thank you for saving me. Even though you had every right to let me bleed out. But i guess that not in your character isn't it?" He asked.
She laughed and shook her head no.
"I won't waste this opportunity." He told the heroine seriously.
"Thank you Lady Luck, you're the best!" Emily said at the back of the now leaving super-hero.
"Don't thank me. Just doing what I can. Take care, both of you." She said to them. She left the office. A smile on her face and her feeling of purpose renewed, at least for awhile.
