As the first light of dawn crept through the window the next morning, Zeni awoke with a sense of purpose. The tantalizing whispers of the sea, just out of sight but ever-present in the portrait of sounds, had filled her dreams, and she was determined to witness its splendor. She had never seen the sea, not even in her original world, and the mystery of its vastness was too alluring to resist.
Zeni dressed quickly and tiptoed past her slumbering friends, the floorboards beneath her feet creaking like the hushed tones of a conspirator. She emerged into the hazy morning, the air thick with the scents of dew and salt. The sea called to her, and she followed its siren song.
As she neared the cliffside, Zeni found a promising spot to begin her ascent. The rock face was dotted with nooks and crannies, like a masterfully crafted puzzle just waiting to be solved. Her heart pounded with anticipation as she contemplated the challenge before her.
As Zeni began her climb, she became aware of an unusual audience: a family of mountain goats, their nimble hooves and shaggy coats hallmarks of their adaptability. They regarded her with mild curiosity, their heads cocked as if to ask, "What's this strange creature doing on our turf?" Zeni chuckled at their comical expressions and the absurdity of the situation.
Throughout her climb, the mountain goats remained her steadfast companions, silently observing her progress. Their presence, both reassuring and bemusing, was a reminder that even in the most unlikely of places, one could find kindred spirits.
After what felt like an eternity of huffing, puffing, and precarious maneuvering, Zeni finally crested the cliff, her limbs aching but her spirit soaring. Before her lay the sea, a vast expanse of blue that stretched beyond the horizon, its surface shimmering like a thousand tiny diamonds.
Zeni drank in the sight, her senses overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of it. The salty scent of the sea filled her nostrils, while the rhythmic ebb and flow of the waves was like the world's most soothing lullaby. She tasted the briny air on her lips, a flavor that spoke of life and adventure. The gentle sea breeze caressed her skin, the cool touch of the wind a balm for her weary limbs. In that moment, she was at one with the sea, its majesty seeping into her very soul.
As Zeni stood at the edge of the cliff, a sudden realization washed over her like the waves below. In the aftermath of their harrowing battle the previous afternoon, she hadn't yet found the time to explore her newly acquired level. She decided this was the perfect moment to delve into the mysteries that awaited her, with the boundless sea before her and the skies above as her witness.

Neith was right! She thought. She’d told me something like this might happen, now I have to take advantage of it.
Excited, Zeni moved to a spot where she could sit comfortably, her legs dangling over the precipice as if daring the abyss to swallow her whole. Closing her eyes, she began to focus her thoughts inward, searching for the wellspring of power that now resided deep within her. She felt her Ka awaken, responding to her call like a wild animal stirring from a long slumber. She concentrated, allowing herself to draw in the energy around her and mingle it with her own Ka—while at the same time, searching for something else.
As she gathered her Ka, Zeni became acutely aware of her surroundings, the sensations amplifying as if she had been gifted a new layer of perception. The warmth of the sun felt like a lover's embrace, the rays caressing her skin with the gentlest of touches. The cool sea breeze brushed against her, whispering into her ear, as it wove through her hair and danced around her body. The sound of the waves crashing below was the heartbeat of the world, setting the rhythm for her own pulse.
It was then that she sensed it: a new type of Ka, one that was unfamiliar to her keen perceptions. It seemed to originate from the gathering storm off in the distance over the ocean, a tempestuous energy that held the promise of untamed power. Intrigued, Zeni reached out to this untapped source, curious to see if she could draw upon it.

To her astonishment, she found that she could not only draw the storm's Ka into her body but could do so with surprising ease. It was as if this new energy had been waiting for her all along, eager to join forces with her own Ka. As the two energies intertwined and danced within her, Zeni's eyes shot open, further dawning upon her.
The revelation was like a flood lamp, illuminating something within herself—waiting to be unleashed. The winds of change had begun to blow, and Zeni knew that her path toward fulfillment had taken a significant turn.
She smiled, weary from the experience, but wholly happy with her discovery. She decided it might be nice to sit and rest a while, and enjoy the beautiful view.
For nearly an hour afterward, Zeni sat at the edge of the cliff, the sea a boundless stage for her eyes to dance upon. With her newfound knowledge she now carried, Zeni took a few more moments to bask in the glorious exhaltation of sun, wind, and sea before slowly rising to her feet. She took one last lingering look at the vast expanse of water before her, committing the beauty of this moment to memory. Reluctantly, she finally began her descent, her heart heavy with the knowledge that she must leave this magical place behind. She bid farewell to her mountain goat companions, their silent vigil over her journey coming to an end.
As she joined her friends for breakfast, she couldn't contain her excitement about her morning adventure. The three of them sat on simple woven mats, a small fire crackling nearby as they shared a modest meal of bread, cheese, and figs.
"So, what were you up to this morning, Zeni?" Basim asked, his playful grin firmly affixed in its usual place.
Zeni hesitated for a moment before answering, "I climbed the cliff to see the sea. It was... well, amazing. Breathtaking, really."
"The sea is a wonder,” Yasmine said. “I'm glad you got to experience it. What was it like for you?"
Zeni paused, searching for the right words.
"It's hard to describe. It was…massive. And powerful, yet still really serene. I've never seen anything like it."
"I can imagine!” Basim agreed. “You should have seen your face when you first heard the waves crashing from a distance."
He widened his eyes and began glancing around in wonder, his mouth slack with excitement as he did his impersonation of her. He pointed at his ear with a gasp and then widened his features even more—making Zeni feel as though he thought she’d looked like a foolish child.
She blushed, feeling a bit self-conscious.
"Yeah, well…we don't have anything like that where I come from."
Yasmine tilted her head.
"Are there no seas or oceans in your world?"
"Oh, I mean, there definitely are, but I lived far away from ‘em. I only ever saw them in books and paintings."
And movies, she thought, but didn’t think she’d have the time or energy to explain the nuances of cinema.
Basim's eyes widened with disbelief.
"You lived your whole life without seeing the sea? That's unbelievable! Even I’ve seen the sea, and I’ve hardly ever left the village!"
Zeni shrugged, a sheepish grin spreading across her face.
"I guess it's one of the many things I never experienced in my world. But wow, you should see your face right now."
They all laughed, as Basim continued to pretend to be much more gobsmacked than he actually likely was.
The conversation shifted as Basim launched into a story about his own adventures by the sea, specifically about thinking he saw a merperson that turned out to just be a hunk of floating flotsam. Zeni took note of Yasmine, who listened intently, her thoughtful gaze never leaving Basim as he spoke.
Zeni herself, feeling more than a little at ease, broached a topic she’d been wondering about..
"So, I haven’t had much time to consider anything much more than training and well…helping out around the settlement. But, hey—we’re all young! So, what do people here do for fun? Are there any games or sports or cool recreational activities?"
Unbidden, an image in her mind bubbled up where Basim was tearing around the desert in a dune buggy, and she had to stifle her laughter.
"We have many,” Yasmine said. “But it all depends on what you enjoy. Are you one who likes a mental challenge? There's senet, a strategy game played on a board. More of a physical person? Then, there's also rakvagir, a form of wrestling.”
“Wrestling?” Zeni asked, not sure she understood the allure.
“Sure!” Basim said. “A group of warriors strip down, oil themselves up, and grapple each other over different shifting terrain.”
Zeni could feel a blush blossoming at her cheeks and neck.
“Strip down?”
Yasmine gave her a knowing smirk and a wink.
“It’s quite popular."
Basim nodded enthusiastically.
"Yeah, it’s pretty cool to see the athleticism involved. Some of those combatants are strengthened by Ankhs and the like—they don’t go down easy. Oh!”
He pointed right in Zeni’s face.
“Don't forget about the chariot races! Those are always a crowd favorite."
Knocked out of her daydreaming about hunky folks twisting around all shiny and such, Zeni's eyes lit up with interest.
"Chariot races? What the hell? That sounds friggin’ sweet!"
Basim laughed.
"Oh, it’s quite the spectacle. You'll have to see one for yourself someday."
As they continued to talk, the trio found themselves lost in conversation, exploring the similarities and differences between their worlds. Their laughter filled the morning air as Basim and Yasmine began inventing further and further bizarre and ridiculous features Zeni’s world might have.
With the sun out in full force, the friends—-as that is what they seemed to be now—eventually packed up their belongings and prepared to depart Tethrys, their hearts full of happiness and good cheer.
