Chapter 2 – Surviving a Bear Encounter

As the day progresses and through the night, periodically someone stops to look through the door left slightly ajar. Checking on the young man who has still not moved.

----------------------------------------

About an hour before dawn, the atmosphere in the room starts to stir. There is a mist or cloud that rolls in, the weight of a presence. A man steps forth out of nothing. Skin like bronze. Dark hair short and flowing. Eyes bright with strength and life.

He walks to the foot of the bed. His eyes are filled with mercy and loving-kindness. He looks over the young man that is still unconscious, a smile on His lips. He pats him on the top of his foot the way a father would; when putting his child to bed. Still smiling, He turns to look out into the distance, and with a step, He is gone.

----------------------------------------

My eyes shoot wide awake. There is nothing like the feeling of when you're sleeping and you know someone is in the room. I sit up and I feel at peace. I know that everything is good. I have no idea where I am. As I sit in the quiet, I am thinking about the things I need to get done today. Better call my wife and let her know I'm okay. I don't see my cell phone. Not sure if it's the weekend or if I have to work today. I don't feel the need to do anything or get out of bed. For the moment I am just relaxing and enjoying the quiet stillness of the room.

After a while, I hear the birds start to chatter. Shortly thereafter, dawn starts to break. As my room is getting brighter, I can see it is more like a wilderness-themed hotel. Furniture made from solid wood pieces. Curtains, blankets, and comforter are all made in that old-time style.

The volume of voices is picking up down the hallway from my room. A commotion is starting. I look over to the doorway and see a young girl peeking at me through the cracked opening. As our eyes meet, she goes wide-eyed and bolts down the hall. Moments later I hear the voices hush. Footsteps now coming this way.

A man with a white lab coat opens the door and calmly walks towards me. Before he can get halfway, another man steps around him, coming to the foot of my bed.

“I'm Officer Talon Trailbreaker, I'd like to ask you some questions”. I don't know a lot about the police, but I know they're your friend until they think you did something wrong. I already hear the accusing tone in his voice.

“Wait, please.” The man in white says to the Officer, as he is holding up one hand slightly to quiet him. Turning to me he continues. “I am Doctor Rowan Lightbringer. How are you feeling?”

Now I don’t trust this one either. If he is a doctor, where is his stethoscope? Why is his name like a power sword? Thoughts and questions keep racing through my mind. As I sit there, gathering my thoughts, I notice that I am laughing inside. I can almost feel the smile on my face. This doctor, has a rock in his hand and is using it to scan me like some futuristic space movie. I’m trying to keep a straight face but I keep thinking of this meme. I kept sending it to my friend every time he would get into trouble. He ‘knew’ his ‘rights’, but he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. The meme was an informational poster of Surviving a Bear Encounter, A Guide for Hikers and Outdoor enthusiasts. This cartoonist/memer marked up the poster to read Surviving a Bear Police Encounter, A Guide for Hikers and Outdoor enthusiasts (Race or Nationality). It even had four rules with pictures of a bear standing up wearing an officer’s hat and badge, and holding a gun.

1). Avoid Eye Contact.

* Bears Police will perceive eye contact as a challenge to their authority.

2). Do Not Run.

* Running will trigger the Bear's officer’s instincts and provoke an attack.

3). Don’t Be a Threat.

* Bears Police are easily provoked. Speak in a calm, low voice, and don’t make sudden movements. Raise your arms over your head to seem larger submissive.

4). Play Dead.

* If all else fails, drop to the ground and pretend to be dead. A Bear Police officer will usually stop its attack once it thinks it has killed you.

“Do you know where you are?” Dr. Lightbringer asks.

“No sir.” I reply. Gathering my wits, I am trying to assess what they want and what kind of trouble I may be in. There is still a smile on my face I can’t get off.

“Can you tell me your name, where you live?” he asks, not looking at me, but picking up a tablet.

I pause, still trying to assess my situation. He gently picks up my hand with a practiced doctor's care and lays it on the stone tablet. I see this ‘stone’ tablet come to life as some trace lines, like circuitry, flash and run about. Moments later it stops and a straight line just flashes at the top.

Dr. Lightbringer turns to the officer and says “He is simple”.
