“Commander, the black dragon heart has been stolen,” a soldier entered Kayde’s office in a panic.
Kayde looked up from the documents she was doing with an irritated look. “Then go find it. Last thing I remember, you’re in charge of all Dragon triggers in the organization,” Kayde’s eyes glowed red.
“Yes ma’am!” the soldier ran out of the office in a hurry.
Kayde turned back to the documents, attempting to get her mind out of the recent news. Had it been any other Dragon trigger, she would have been more worried, but it was just the Dragon heart. It was sent there to be stored since it was more of a burden to them. Every elite soldier presented the Dragon heart perished upon bonding or was crippled before deciding to take their own life.
If it was stolen, it wouldn’t be of any use to them either way. If they were lucky, everyone behind this theft would perish to the Dragon heart.

Zane opened his eyes to find the white ceiling of a hospital room. Looking around, there was probably over twenty other people with him.
“You’re finally awake,” instructor Clarice said as she approached him. “I thought you were a goner.”
The last thing he remembered was the Dragon heart acting out and a red dragon about to kill him. Then he remembered that he wasn’t alone that time.
Zane began frantically looking around. “Where’s Melissa?!”
Instructor Clarice’s turned grim. “I think it’s better if you see it for yourself.”
Using his IV stand as a walking stick, Zane was led to a private room in the hospital. When he opened the door, he saw Melissa on the hospital bed. “You’re alright,” Melissa said weakly. “I’m glad,” she smiled.
Zane’s eyes watered as he looked at her. Melissa was covered in bandages, but what stood out most was the missing left leg.
“Don’t even think it,” Melissa spoke. “It’s not your fault. Neither of us even remember what happened after the attack that should have killed us both.”
Zane’s grip on his IV stand tightened. “I’ll find a way for you to get your leg back.”
Clarice watched the scene with a bit of surprise. Among the residents of the refugee base, Zane was the most detached. He didn’t make friends, approached any of the caretakers, and generally hated any form of socializing. But seeing him care so much for someone he tends to see as a bother was quite the sight.
“You don’t need to go that far,” Melissa spoke. “I'll be fi”
“I swear it!” Zane yelled before running away, which surprised Clarice since he needed his IV stand to walk just a few seconds ago.
------
Zane panted after running all the way to the rooftop of the hospital. Expression emotions were never his specialty, so he just ran away.
“Pathetic.”
Zane jumped in surprise and began looking around. “Who’s there?”
“I am the mighty black dragon, Averin.”
Zane frantically looked around, finding no dragon in sight. “Bull shit.”
“I have no reason to lie to a pathetic human. You’re only able to hear me due to the dragon heart you bonded with.”
“I have the dragon heart?” Zane unconsciously rubbed his chest.
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
Dragon triggers were powerful artifacts that everyone is fighting for. Having just one guarantees a bright future, but it also paints a giant target on their back. But not everyone could use Dragon triggers. Bonding with a Dragon trigger requires significant amount of power. Some could even kill during the bonding process.
There are three types of Dragon triggers. Relic types take the form of physical items like weapons, accessories, or clothes. They're the most common Dragon triggers and easiest to use since the relics act as the medium itself. They’re also the easiest to transfer. Simply relinquish the bond and hand over the relic.
Another type are Spell types. Dragon triggers that take the form of Draconic spells. It grants the user mastery over the Draconic spell it takes the form of. This type of Dragon trigger can only be transferred through a tedious ritual since it does not have a physical form.
The last type is Biological types. These Dragon triggers take the form of body parts. They’re the rarest type and the hardest to control. They are absorbed into the user’s body upon bonding and could only be transferred upon death.
“Does this heart belong to you?” Zane asked Averin.
“No. I am still alive and simply speaking to you through the Dragon heart.”
“Then what the fuck do you want?” Zane questioned.
Obviously, dragons were their enemy. Zane was technically alive during the war even though he wasn’t aware of it, and he was technically a victim.
“Revenge.”
Zane raised an eyebrow. “On who? You guys were the one that destroyed our world,” Zane crossed his arms. “If anything, we should be the one wanting revenge.”
“Not revenge on you lowly humans or those divine beings,” Averin corrected. “I want revenge on another dragon!”
“How does that involve me?” Zane asked. “There’s no more dragons here.”
“That’s what you think,” Averin spoke. “Among the beings that moved to your world, several dragons disguised as humans came,” Averin revealed.
Zanes eyes widened. “The fuck? Where are they?”
“That’s for you to find out.”
“The hell am I going to do against dragons?!” Zane yelled. “They could just flick my head off!”
For some reason, Zane could feel that Averin was smirking on the other side of wherever he was.
“That’s where I come in. I will help you.”
Zane scoffed. “How exactly do you plan on doing that from wherever you are?”
“Like this.”
Zane could feel a sudden surge of power in his chest along with information flooding into his head.
Dark dragon heart – stage 1
Ability:
Dragonification - Partially transform a part of your body into the form of a dark dragon.
Draconic growth – The growth of the user has been enhanced to the rate of a dragon.
Dark dragon’s shadow – Allows the user to blend into the darkness and hide their presence.
“This will hurt, human.”
Forced evolution is underway
After the voice echoed in his head, Zane felt unimaginable pain through his whole body. He couldn’t even scream as he fell to the ground in agony. It felt like his whole body was being ripped to pieces.
To his horror, Zane saw the insides of his body moving as if he didn’t have any bones. At that point, he couldn’t stand it and lost consciousness.

“Lady Elfina. We have arrived,” Elfina heard the driver.
The driver opened the door for her, then Elfine stepped out. The hospital in front of her looked like it had seen better days, but that was to be expected for this sector.
“Let’s just get this over with,” Elfina grumbled as they went inside.
Her driver led the way until they reached a private hospital room. When they opened the door, she found what they came here for.
“Lady Elfina,” Melissa sat up.
“I came here to discuss your position as a surveillance researcher,” Elfina got to the point. “Clearly, monitoring and doing the proper checks on subject Z would be challenging for you now,” Elfina pointedly stared at Melissa’s missing leg.
Melissa looked down. “I under-”
“So what!”
Elfina turned to find subject Z standing by the door. As an elf, Elfina was sensitive to the mana around her. And she could feel a tremendous amount of mana from subject Z.
“You think I’ll let someone else from your organization near me.”
“You don’t have a choice,” Elfina stated. “And she is no longer capable of handling you.”
“And you think a replacement could?” subject Z stepped forward. “I don’t give a shit even if it’s you.”
“Learn your place!” Elfina’s driver charged at subject Z, but they were surprised when subject Z backhanded the driven and sending him crashing to the wall.
“The only person I’ll cooperate with is Melissa,” subject Z declared.
Elfina’s eyes narrowed at him.
