A2:C11 - What makes a Dragon Tick - Part One

The present members of the Flaming Scale Clan, from the youngest to the oldest, were stunned speechless by Kai's transformation.

While most had seen the depiction of when Kai landed at the Sky Guard checkpoint, they believed that it had been embellished with artistic flare yet now, they thought it hadn't done him justice.

If it wasn't for the sharp sound of shattering glass, due to the molten sand rapidly cooling, or the faint crackling of the small patches of fire, the entire area that had been filled with the sound of violence moments ago, would be deathly silent.

Kai was slightly bigger than a drake, around the size of a large bull, yet even a fool could tell that his body was magnitudes more powerful and well built.

Elder Han's heart, like the others, felt like it would explode at any moment yet, he was one of the few that had begun to realise the implications of what was standing before them.

The suspicions in his heart had all but been proved, and even though his conscious mind had continuously tried to reject the idea that Kai came from the mythical beings of the past, deep down he knew that it was the case.

The pressure that Kai's true form imposed on his bloodline was as if he was meeting a being greater than his ancestor.

With soft thuds, both Ron and Rein had fallen to their knees, Ron retaking his human form in the process, which was quickly followed by most of those that had hidden in the shadows.

Their bloodline was pure, yet their strength was lacking, and so, instinctually, they started to prostrate themselves in front of Kai.

Only Elder Han, the Clan Master and surprisingly, Kaida remained standing.

The Clan Master quickly moved to block Ron and Rein from Kai's view as he forced a smile onto his face, wanting to speak but struggling to find the words.

Even a moron would have been able to work out that they were trying to suppress and intimidate Kai, believing him just to be an arrogant variant and he struggled to find an excuse that would save both parties face.

Unlike Elder Han, the Clan Master had access to the Clan's secrets and knew more of the truth and not just the propaganda of the past.

The fact that the gods, the main oppressors of the ancient evils, also known as dragons, had been deposed meant that Kai's appearance was not as disastrous as Han believed.

In fact, the Clan Master's calculating mind had already devised many ways for the Clan to take advantage of Kai's presence.

The Clan Master's musings were cut short as Kai took a deep breath and stretched, his bones cracking as his muscles contracted.

Having regained his natural form, most of Kai's frustrations had vanished like mist on a warm, summer's day and so, his eyes quickly lost their red hue and returned to their more majestic, golden colour.

"Never in my wildest dream's would I have ever expected to have the chance to meet a true dragon." The Clan Master's lips finally started twitching as he started to speak. "I apologise for our rude behaviour. I have eyes, but I could not see, ears but could not hear. Ignorance, while detrimental, is not a sin. Please forgive us."

The killing intent had all but vanished, causing Kai to relax and had been staring up at the sky, his desire to fly once again almost unbearable yet having noticed for the first time that something was wrong with it as if it were fake. Hearing the Clan Master's words, he turned his attention back to the Clan Elder.

The red hue slightly returned as Kai's gazed moved passed the Clan Master and on to the people behind him.

"Let's talk after this little 'duel' has concluded," Kai's gaze turned cold. "Unless you intend to continue interfering?"

"We submit," shouted Ron in a shaky voice.

"Refused," spat Kai immediately, his neck raising his head to his full height. "You already have revealed your claws, yet you want to flee after attacking?"

Ron's face turned pale, his naked form shivering but not from the cold as Rein slowly stood, defiance and fear dancing in her eyes.

She had seen the power of Kai's attack earlier, and even her stubborn pride admitted that if it hadn't been for the interference from her clan, she would have been seriously injured if not killed.

"I have been rude to Senior and can only beg for his guidance. Please instruct us." Rein bowed slightly and forced her legs to part as she took a shaky stance.

Seeing Rein prepare, Ron chided himself internally. He was stronger than Rein and had more experience yet, while he could only cower on the floor, she had already accepted her fate and stood up.

What made it worse was that not only was his father here but a few of the more important clan elders. If he continued like this, not only would he lose a lot of face and respect, but it is likely that it will significantly impact his future.

With a deep breath, Ron stood up and moved next to Rein before whispering. "Thank's cousin."

The Clan Master's heart was turbulent. While Kai represented a huge potential for his Clan, to the point where it might be able to surpass the other monster clans in Netherspire City finally, Ron was his only son and Rein was one of the few geniuses the clan had nurtured recently.

"Words may be withdrawn, yet actions can never be undone." The Clan Master wracked his brains trying to come up with a way to de-escalate the situation. However, he knew that if Kai did make a move on the two behind him, he would intervene.

While Kai was a treasure, he wasn't more important than his own child.

Kai had been struck by the two earlier, and even though most of his frustrations had been released, he had never let another creature cause him harm without retaliating, and his personality would never allow him to start now.

However, just as everyone was tensing, expecting the situation to explode once again, Kadia ran forward, in front of Ron and Rein and past the Clan master and only stopped a few meters away from Kai with his hands out at his side as if he wanted to stop Kai from passing him.
