The next day, Edna awoke in a luxurious bed. She slowly got up, yawning, but briefly couldn't remember how she got here. “Eh?”
“Good morning!” A voice called to her. Edna let out a startled squawk, her head swiveling to regard the woman in the room with her. It was a maid, who bowed as she was looked at. “I am Valerie, one of Magnus’ personal maids and your chosen attendant for your stay here.”
“Here…? Oh, is this the academy?!”
“Unfortunately not, I’m afraid. Due to your lack of former education, you will spend the better part of the year here catching up with your peers, so that you will not struggle in your classes…”
“So it’s like school? AWESOME!” Edna said with sparkling eyes. She had never been to school before, but she figured it was totally an awesome thing where she could go to have fun and make friends.
After the day ended, she, in fact, did not think school was awesome. In fact, school sucked. “A squared plus B squared equals C squared….maths is haaaaard!” she moaned softly. Currently she was seated at a desk in a small room that was very minimalistic, featuring only a large blackboard. Magnus stood beside it, chalk in hand. “Come now, Edna. This is just the basics, you know? It is not so bad, magic equations are even worse.”
“Don’t wanna! I wanna go home!”
“Edna, this is your home now, you know?”
“….”
“Your assignment for tonight will be to studying the principles of basic algebra and the summarizations of the sides of triangles.”
“Okay….”
The days passed by as such, with Edna struggling to catch up. Though she knew basic addition and subtraction, that was as far as her mathematical knowledge went. Multiplication tables and division, square roots, pi….she worked hard to understand it. It was not just Math too.
“The Apollyn Empire was founded by the first Archon, William Black. After uniting the Valskor Houses and the seven nations under one flag, he was able to set the first principles and legislation of the newly formed empire as its first ruler. After that, there have been 12 Archons that have reigned over our Empire, with the current one being Jacob Black, who currently presides over what we currently call the “Golden Age of the Empire”.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
History was there too.
“Magitech is a powerful tool that was initially developed during the reign of the 5th Archon. For the longest time, mankind relied on the Dragon Gods initially, and later, the Elder Gods; and then later than that, other pantheons. However, as our understanding of magic has deepened, we have been able to combine it with the practical applications of science to perform things that previously only magic users could do before! The power of a mage can now be in the hands of a commoner, and things in our imagination, like flight and high speed travel without horses, is now possible. Each piece of magitech is usually powered by a magic infused gem that can be ‘programmed’ by a specialist, what we call an ‘Artificer’….”
There were also the fundamentals of the lifeblood of the Empire, that which was called Magitech.
“In the beginning, it was said that the world was crafted by Six entities, whom we refer to as Primeval Deities, rulers of the universe who are far more powerful than Gods. However, due to their broad reach, it’s believed they gave birth to the Gods to provide more concrete jurisdiction of the realm of Aesir. Initially, there were the Dragon Gods, who, along with dragons, were the first denizens of the realm of magic. Then, the humans appeared, and, despite their inherent rivalry with the dragons, came to worship their Gods too. Eventually, however, this rivalry reared its head, as the faith of Humanity, combined with the will of a few of the Primeval Deities, who were now bigger, created the Elder Gods, the first gods of humanity, and worshiped only by humanity. The Elder Gods and Dragon Gods became enemies then, and in the realm of humanity, the Draconic Faith has dwindled, while the Elder Faith has grown, although in this day and age, there exist a few other Gods that are worshiped by many….”
Theology was there too. These, along with things such as magic and society were included. The months flew by, and finally, the arduous classes came to an end. “I think you’re ready, Edna,” Magnus said as he placed the test she had turned in onto his desk. It was a thick pamphlet, a comprehensive test over everything they had studied. And, scrawled on the front…was a solid B minus.
What? It was a lot of information, ok?!
The fact she was able to get a passing score was proof that she could go toe to toe with her peers, adolescents who were approaching their teenage years. “Edna, I think it’s time. Are you ready to finally unlock the secrets of your magic?”
Edna, who was now thirteen, nodded empathetically. Magnus grinned. “Then I’m pleased to announce your school life will start tomorrow. Go take the rest of the day off, you've earned it."
