Driving

Realistic Fiction

I’m driving my car. I’m not really sure where I am. I’ve just been driving. Letting the rhythm of the road put me into a state of calm. The sound of the engine is a comforting sound to hear.

I’m getting pretty close to that car in front of me, I might want to slow down a little. I can see my brake lights flash as I press the brakes. I think I'm far enough now, there's about a three second gap between me and the driver ahead. That Nissan behind me is getting pretty close, basically tailgating me. I’m going to move into the lane to my left, so he’ll stop tailgating me. He’s going pretty fast, I wonder where he has to be. Maybe he's late for dinner, or just rushing to meet someone special. Or, maybe he's just like me, driving without a destination, probably lost in his thoughts, just like me. As I look ahead, I see city lights that are starting to twinkle in the distance, their glow piercing through the dark of the night. I can see some pretty big buildings, their glass windows reflecting the moonlight.

The city is alive with energy, even at this late hour. I must be in Raleigh, I remember why I’m here now. The memories flooding back, each one of them being a snapshot of my life I lived long ago. This city holds so many stories for me, each street corner reminds me of the days that have gone by. As I drive through the familiar streets, I can’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia. The city has changed over the years, but it still feels like home. The buildings may be taller and the streets are busier, but the spirit of Raleigh remains unchanged. I park my car and step out into the cool night air. The city is quiet now, its inhabitants lost in dreams. But for me, this is just the beginning. There's a whole city waiting to be explored with countless more stories just waiting to be told.

I take a deep breath, the cool air filling my lungs. The scent of the city, mixed with a few other aromas that I can’t put my finger on. I start walking, my footsteps echoing through the quiet streets. The buildings tower over me, their silhouettes stark against the night sky. I pass by a small park, its trees swaying in the soft gusts of wind. A couple is sitting on a bench, lost in their own world. I can't help but smile a little at the sight. Further down the road, I see a group of teenagers hanging out near a convenience store. Their laughter and chatter fill the air, A contrast to the otherwise quiet night. They remind me of my own youth, days spent with friends without a care in the world.

I continue my walk, with each step taking me deeper into the and further into my past, I pass by my old school, its structure is barely recognizable after all these years. Yet, the memories it holds are as clear as day. I came across the cafe where I had my first job. It's closed now, but I can still see myself behind the counter, serving coffee and pastries to the customers. It was a tough job, but it taught me the value of hard work. As I wander through the city, I realize that each street, and every building has their own stories to tell. Stories of hope and despair, love and loss, joy and sorrow. And amongst these stories, I find my own.

I finally reached my destination, an old apartment building at the end of a narrow street. This is where I grew up, where I spent my childhood days dreaming of what life had in store for me. The city may have changed over the years, but this building seems to remain untouched by time. Its familiar design and features. As I look at the building, I feel a sense of peace wash over me. As I stand there in the quiet night, under the gaze of countless stars, I realize that this journey is far from over. There’s still so much to see, so much to explore.

For now though it's time for me to head back. I take my time walking back to my car, looking at the big trees that used to once be small and skinny. As I get into the car and start the engine, I take one last look at the city skyline. It's a sight that never fails to take my breath away. With a smile on my face and a heart filled with memories, I drive off into the night. THe city slowly fades in my rearview mirror, but its spirit stays with me. This is just one chapter in my life’s story. And as long as there are roads to travel, and more cities to explore, my story will continue on. The road stretches out, long before me. Once again, the hum of the engine is my only companion, almost like a comforting purr that fills the silence.

The headlights cut through the darkness illuminating the path ahead of me. These low beams aren’t enough, I turn them up to high beams, which almost feels like the first time I got glasses. I glance in the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of the city skyline one more time. The buildings are but mere silhouettes against the dark night sky, their lights twinkling like stars. It’s a sight that never fails to take my breath away. As I drive further away from the city I can feel a sense of calm wash over me. The hustle and busy life of the city is replaced by the open road.

It's just me and my car, a solid figure against the backdrop of the night. The memories of the city still linger in my mind, each one of them being as good as the other. The laughter and chatter of friends, the aroma of street food wafting through the air, the hustle of the busy streets, each a memory that is a reminder of the time that has gone by. But it's not just the memories that I carry with me. It's also the lessons I've learned, the experiences that I've had, the people that I've met. Each one has shaped me into the person I am today. As I drive on, I can’t help but reflect on my journey. There have been many ups and downs, moments of joy and moments of sorrow. But through it all, I’ve learned to appreciate every moment.

The road ahead is unknown, filled with twists and turns, but that's what makes it exciting. The thrill of discovery, and the joy of exploration. It’s what keeps me going. I don’t really know where this road will lead me, but that doesn’t really matter to me. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey, and the way I get there.

As I drive into the night, with a smile on my face, I know that this is just the beginning. There are many more roads to travel, and many more cities to explore. But for now, I’m content with just driving. Because right now, this is my safe space. Just me and my car going on a little journey. So as long as I have this car and the open road ahead of me, I know that I'll always find my way. There are so many endless possibilities that could happen, and I’m just now beginning to find them. The open road almost feels welcoming. Just like a hug from a parent.

As I look around, checking all of my blind spots, I take a deep breath. My grip on the steering wheel tightens, and I look down the long straight stretch of highway in front of me. I press my foot on the accelerator, the car lurches forwards. The engine roars as the rpm climbs higher and higher as the numbers on the speedometer are quickly passed by the red line. The wind howls past, as everything becomes a blur, as I give my car full gas. The thrill of speed and the sheer exhilaration of pushing my car to its limits is intoxicating. My heart pounds as the engine continues to roar.

The highway is mine and mine alone. There are no other cars or lights, just mine. My lights are still slicing through the darkness as I feel the vibration of the engine coursing through me. The car feels like an extension of myself, responding to the slightest of my touch, and my slightest commands. We are one, tearing down the highway as Freebird plays in the background, just barely louder than the engine. The city is far behind me now, and continues to fade out as I fly down the highway. As I fly down the highway, I can’t help but smile.
