Chapter Seven: True Doom

The soldier sprinted away from the arena, laughing his head off inside his own mind. That was so much fun! He hadn't had fun in... years! Decades, maybe!

Eld caught up to him, several scars coating her fur healing at an incredible rate as her tongue lolled happily, and he ruffled her head fur gleefully while he ran.

Boots slamming into the evenly set cobblestones that made up the road of the area he was sprinting through, he unslung his sword and leaned forward, tapping into more speed as he targeted the crowd of demons in front of him, who appeared to protesting about something or another. Bending down further, he ended up almost on all fours, but was running at such a steep angle that it only appeared that way.

It was in that method by which the soldier crashed into the crowd with all the precision and power of a railgun, swinging his sword in a loaded streak, carving through limbs and bodies with all the ease of a master swordsman. Part of him wondered when he'd learned how to use the sword, but most of him was busy butchering.

It took him less than two minutes to finish off the last of the crowd, a massive demon with rippling muscles going down from a cut across the chest. Punching his sword with a clang, the blood literally vibrated off of it, and the soldier resisted the urge to kiss the blade. It was an excellent weapon, however much he missed his firearms.

The soldier didn't even bother reading the second option. He practically punched the button to accept the skill, and a moment later, he felt the knowledge of how to use it flood into his mind.

He didn't have time to appreciate it, unfortunately.

"Stop in the name of the Nine!"

Spinning around, the soldier saw six of the biggest, most heavily armored demons he'd seen up to date approaching him, bearing spiked swords longer than he was tall and rectangular shields taller than they were. Their armor coated every inch of their bodies, focusing heavily on joints and especially the neck. The only gap was two eyeslits, flame erupting from the small holes. Each demon was easily fifteen feet tall.

One of the ones in the front stepped forward, raising its sword and pointing it at the soldier. "For crimes against demonkind, we, the Royal Guard, have elected to personally-"

The soldier punched the side of his blade, and it clanged loudly, The demons flinched, and the one speaking took a step back. Grinning behind the visor, the soldier stepped forward, punching the sword again. The demon glanced back at its comrades, then continued with a faint waver, "We are the Royal Guard, and have decided to personally-"

CLANG.

It stepped backward again, and the demons behind followed suit uneasily. "We will-"

CLANG.

The lead demon raised its sword, growling, "Screw it, you're dead!" It ran towards the soldier, swinging its sword down in a carving arc.

The soldier acted quickly. Dropping his blade to the ground, its center resting on one of his boots, he braced himself and locked his knees. Popping his shoulders, he raised his hands and...

...caught the sword. The demon stared at it, and even through the two helmets the soldier could practically smell the terror.

What the demon didn't know was that the soldier's hands held notification boards, and from what had told him, the thin blue boards were unbreakable. Laughing in his helmet, the soldier slid the demon's sword aside, allowing it to crash into the road, then flipped his own blade into his hand using his foot. Clutching it back-handed in one hand, he leaped up, wrapping his legs around the demon's helmet and leaning back. Startled and unsteady, the demon toppled backward, dropping both the sword and the shield to clutch at the soldier's armor.

The moment they hit the ground, the soldier grabbed the base of the demon's helmet and pulled upward. The moment he caught a glimpse of gray skin, he raised his sword and stabbed downwards. The demon stopped moving.

Shaking himself off, the soldier stepped backward and heard a clink. Looking down, he grinned again, and felt the demons behind him tense.

Reaching down to pick up the demon's sword, he grunted in effort as he raised it, resting on his shoulder and wielding his prior blade backhanded. Turning to the five remaining in the Royal Guard, the soldier aimed the bigger sword at them, still holding it one-handed.

Then he dropped both swords.

Confused, they glanced back and forth at each other, then looked back to the soldier.

Popping his neck, the soldier raised one hand to about waist height, one hand clenched in a loose fist as if wanting a fist bump. The other hand went a bit below waist height, cocked at a downward angle and ready to grip.

Crystalline, blood-red energy poured out of the soldier, forming into a dense shape. A massive, bulky section just in front of him, one handle rising to fit into his hand. A back area slowly took shape, easing into his grip and creating a tiny button just under his thumb. In front of the large section, six rotating barrels solidified, already spinning up and building speed.

In other words, what might be commonly known as a minigun.

He opened fire.
