Chapter 1 : The first time

Chapter 1 : The first time

The first time Ethan saw such a gentle person was at the veterinary clinic.

When entering a veterinary clinic, people usually notice the cute little animals or the sharp smell of ether. However, ironically, the first thing that caught his eye was a tall man with a broad, muscular back. The man had his back to Ethan, smiling gently but radiantly.

Ethan pushed the door open, and the bell chimed softly like a gentle breeze. Hearing the bell, the doctor at the examination table looked up, along with the attention of the waiting customers.

The doctor saw Ethan carrying an injured dog and was immediately alarmed, hurriedly asking, "What happened to the dog?"

Ethan snapped out of his daze and replied hastily, "T-that, I don't..."

Before Ethan could finish his stuttering words, the doctor quickly called out, "Let me take a look at it first, okay?"

"Y-yes, please. Thank you, doctor."

The dog was quickly taken to the surgery room by the doctor and nurse, and Ethan promptly went to the reception desk to inquire about the surgical fees and receipt. After paying all the costs, he walked quickly towards the exit after a tiring day. Just as he reached the door, he was stopped by the voice of the assistant at the desk.

"Excuse me, sir. Aren't you going to wait for the dog's surgery to finish?"

"W-wait? I'm sorry, I didn't realize," Ethan responded quickly to the assistant.

"Aren't you the owner of this adorable dog?"

Ethan suddenly remembered back when he was just 7 years old. His home by the serene river, a modest house with a gentle mother and a beloved dog. It was a Golden Retriever, very obedient and playful with him. But happiness often doesn't last; shortly after his 10th birthday, the dog was taken by bad people.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

He stood frozen for a moment, then stammered, "I-I found it in an alley not far from here."

The assistant didn't ask any further questions but simply smiled and said something rather puzzling, "You truly are a rare find."

An hour later, the surgery room light turned off. Finally, it was done. He had waited here for an hour for a dog when he could have been lounging on his soft bed at home.

"Are you the owner of this dog? It's a Dachshund, a breed originally from Europe during the Middle Ages, bred to hunt badgers, so you could call it a Badger Dog!"

The doctor, who was as beautiful as a fairy, smiled at him again, like sunlight piercing through eternal darkness. It was worth waiting an hour for. Thinking back, it was worth the hour he had spent.

"I-I saw it injured in an alley nearby, so I... brought it here. I also paid the medical fees, so can I leave it here?"

The doctor paused, seeing his confused and hesitant face, then pondered for a moment. After evaluating him from head to toe, he smiled and said to the secretary, "Could you get me a note and a pen from the table over there?"

The friendly secretary left, leaving just the doctor and Ethan.

The doctor looked at him again, smiling, "You know, we aren't a charity center. A veterinary clinic requires many operating costs, so we can't keep this dog for free."

"Do you mean I should support this dog monthly?" Ethan quickly responded.

"Quite different from what I expected, you catch on quickly~"

Finally, luck came to Ethan as the friendly secretary returned. Truly, you can't judge a book by its cover!

"Doctor, here's your note!"

"Thank you. Let's do it this way; come by every 15th of the month to visit the dog. You don't need to send too much money, just show that you care!"

Thinking it over, it still meant he had to pay for its care. Just for a small issue like this, they went back and forth with several sentences, this person was quite fake.

Ethan, feeling indifferent but not wanting more trouble, nodded, "Alright, I'll come by on the 15th of next month. I'll take my leave now."

"Thank you for your cooperation!"

Ethan walked out of the clinic, his face not looking too good, but at least he was relieved to finally head home. Looking back into the clinic, he saw the doctor smiling gleefully.

"He's a very kind man; you shouldn't tease him like that," the assistant remarked.

The doctor replied, "He seemed quite annoyed by my attitude, didn't you notice? He just wanted to avoid trouble. Did he leave his name?"

"Ethan, he signed the payment receipt," the assistant responded.

"I'll have to call this name every 15th of the month, won't I?"

"That thick-skinned doctor."

Who would have thought that just because of a Dachshund, one person would have to spend money for monthly visits, and another would catch an interesting prey and make them pay monthly. Life is indeed ironic.
