When James regained consciousness he found himself drifting in darkness, and yet, he wasn’t afraid. The darkness was warm and comforting. It embraced him, protected him, and nurtured him. He could feel a faint pulsating through the void that made him feel sleepy.
Where… am… I…? James’ mind was fuzzy. His thoughts seemed scattered and incoherent. Oh well. He didn’t have the energy to think about it, so he allowed the darkness to lull him back to sleep.
He wasn’t sure how long he drifted in the void. He was never awake for very long, and, even when he was, there was no way to measure the passage of time in the eternal darkness. However, one day, everything changed.
The darkness moved. It was pushing him out! Why?! I don’t understand! Suddenly there was light, and sound, and movement. A cacophony of sensations assaulted James’ eyes and ears. It was too much! He didn’t like this world outside of the darkness. It was too bright, too loud, too cold.
“Waaaa!” James let out a wail containing all of his grief and discomfort. Surprisingly, other voices rose to answer him. He couldn’t understand them, but he could feel happiness in the way that they spoke.

James opened his eyes, blinking past the tears and the brightness, and saw… a wrinkly giant! “Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!”
The cruel giant laughed at his cries. James wanted to escape, but the giant was holding him in its arms and he couldn’t break free no matter how he squirmed. That was when another voice spoke. This voice wasn’t harsh and grating like the wrinkly giant’s, instead it was calm and soothing.
James stopped squirming and fell silent. The wrinkly giant nodded, like this was a good sign, and handed him over to another giant. The new giant was exhausted and covered in sweat, but, even so, she was young and beautiful, with long, silky blue hair and pale-blue eyes. She gently cradled James in her arms while humming a soft lullaby. Her embrace was like the darkness, warm and comforting. Her heartbeat gradually lulled him to sleep. Ah, I see, this is my mother, James realized, it’s not that these people are giants, it’s that I’m really small. I’ve been reborn as a baby!
James had so many questions, but the slow, rhythmic rocking of his mother’s arms made him too sleepy. *Yawn* I’ll think about it tomorrow.
