The undead are an artificial kind of monsters; their origins thought to the inhuman experiments practised by sages of other ages are recorded in the “summary of the immortality research” by an archmage called Rolo Thaddeus Adkins, one of the fews texts left after the Disaster. The title and the experiments described within its pages have leaded the erudites to think that the named archmage is the heretic who gave birth to the soulless monsters and confirmed the theory that the undead curse destroys the soul in a complex process eradicating any memories or personalities traits, meaning that the undead are literally soulless. Also the tested weak spot of the undead are the holy blessings, the gods blessings affect the soul itself so if you bless an undead it is logical that it won´t find a soul to affect and it will release the holy power inside the being making a lot of damage. On the other hand the undead are tremendously resistant to the soul magic, since they don´t have a soul it won´t damage it and it will only release a wave of raw mana. This doesn´t means the wave of mana is weaker than the wave of holy power, but since the undead aren´t descendant of the gods they don´t have the natural resistance to the holy power other races has and they have a lot of resistance to the raw mana since they are born from the magic.

A long time has passed, kingdoms flourished and perished for the undead curse is slow and sneaky and like an illness it spreads without anyone noticing.

And without no one noticing the marshes once limited by the neglected road has overcome the limits the humans tried to imposed the nature and invaded the near and not to near farms to the point of being visible from the nearest city.

At this moment, little more than 500 years has passed after the disappearance of our unlucky farmer and a skeleton has woken up from a long sleep, his bones long time ago lost their white purity and turned sickly yellow, and in the eyes cavities resides a flickering dark flame, sample of the dark mana that resides within its olds bones.

Now you may be asking why the rodent undead spawned immediately and our Mr Bones didn´t.  Well it has an easy explanation, the undead feeds in death energy and use the power of their victims souls to create a pseudo-soul and becoming self-aware. The processes of “waking up” doesn´t need soul power, only death energy contrary of the process of becoming self-aware that is secondary and optional and unknown for the other enlighten species. But the lesser undead continue needing death energy to sustain themselves and that usually limits the number of undead a region can sustain meaning that recently a lot of undead have perished and now is the turn of the skeleton to play with the scythe.
