CHAPTER 12 : TWO MISSIONS
After I joined Dethrone, I slowly realized how little I knew about the outside world. I learned that beyond Olymzeus, there were two other worlds: Earth, where humans lived, and Patala, home to demons. I also uncovered the origins of the 'Great War of Ragnarok'.
As I delved deeper into our organization, I discovered the extent of its reach and ideology. To my surprise, Dethrone had members scattered across the entire world of Olymzeus. Cain wasn’t exaggerating when he said he was just one of many. Our organization had a hierarchy with three ranks: the most powerful were the high-ranking members, followed by the mid-ranking members, who led groups of five to ten people, and finally, the general members. Cain was a mid-ranking member.
The leader’s identity remained a mystery. Once a month, every mid to high-ranking member would receive a message from the leader, delivered by a white pigeon created through magic. The message contained a secret location and a specific time. When they gathered at the appointed place, they would receive instructions on the organization’s future plans, conveyed through red magical text encrypted on a white stone.
We had many secret training facilities for newcomers, hidden in the underworld across various parts of Olymzeus. After joining Dethrone, I was sent to one of these facilities. There, we were trained and educated in subjects like combat, the theoretical and practical use of magical energy, the geographical landscapes of Olymzeus, and the ideology of our organization. It was there that I awakened my magical energy. I spent three years there. The beginning was tough, but as time went on, it became a lot of fun. I made many friends and countless memories. During those three years, Cain and his group would visit me from time to time, and we’d always have a blast.
When my training was complete, I received my black robe, the iconic mask of our organization, and other necessary equipments. I officially joined Cain’s group, and we began our missions in earnest. Most of our tasks involved robbing gold and goods from wealthy merchants deeply connected to the royal palace, assassinating power-obsessed nobles, and smuggling rare metals like Adamantium to Patala.
Ten years passed. Cain became a high-ranking member. As for me, my hard work and efficiency led to the same rank as him. People often remarked on my extraordinary growth rate and natural talent for executing missions. But to me, it wasn’t anything special. I simply put in the work and was rewarded with success—nothing more.
Despite my rise in rank, my relationship with my friends remained unchanged. In my spare time, I still loved to spend time with them, eat with them, drink with them, and laugh with them.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
As for Cain, his behavior toward me had become increasingly strange. He started ignoring my letters and stopped visiting me on weekends, which he used to do regularly. The last time we met, he avoided even making eye contact. I wasn’t sure what was going on. Was he jealous? That didn’t seem like him—he wasn’t the type to be narrow-minded. Whatever the reason, it wasn’t something I could control. After all, I couldn’t read minds. Besides, today we had to work together on a crucial mission, so it was better not to dwell on such trivial matters.
In fact, there were two missions. The first was to free Musgul from the prison of Tartarus and bring him to our headquarters. From what I knew, he was a despicable scumbag involved in countless crimes—corruption, sexual extortion, and the list went on. But the truth was, he was 'our' despicable scumbag. He produced a massive amount of Adamantium, which we smuggled to Patala. So, despite my disdain for him, I had to get him out of there.
The second mission was far more dangerous. According to the intel we received, a mysterious devil had been captured and kept on the third floor of Tartarus. He was rumored to be extremely powerful, responsible for the massacre on Skeletal Island. The only reason he was still alive was that the Beastmen Royal Army hadn’t been able to kill him, despite their numerous attempts. Our mission was simple: free him and tame him. If we could recruit such a monster into our organization, our goal of dethroning the royal family might be achieved sooner than expected. But we had to be careful. If he was as fearsome as the rumors suggested, it might be wiser to retreat.
That was why Cain and I, both high-ranking members, were assigned to this mission. But we weren’t alone. Accompanying us were two mid-ranking members: Alas and Alias, a pair of siblings. Alas specialized in strengthening magic, which could double the physical strength of his target. His sister, Alias, was skilled in healing magic. Individually, their abilities might seem modest, but when combined with the skills of high-ranking members, they became invaluable assets. That was why, despite being only mid-ranking, they were highly esteemed within the organization.
Four of us met at a small inn on the border of Athedon, the capital city of Olymzeus and the nearest city to Tartarus. There, we secured a private room to discuss our plan. We decided to execute our operation at night, not merely because secrecy is best maintained under the cover of darkness, but due to a specific reason. It was reported that seven high-ranking officers from the beastmen army would be stationed to guard Tartarus that night. Of these seven, four would travel from Athedon to Tartarus, passing through a dense forest. Our plan was straightforward: ambush them and take their places. If we succeeded, dealing with the remaining three would be relatively easy.
We began preparing our trap and they fell for it. To be honest, the four officers were strong, but not as formidable as Cain. He took care of them singlehandedly and silenced their heartbeats. We then reached Tartarus, having successfully impersonated their identities.
It was time for us to execute operation. I thought we were completely prepared for every challenge that would come our way. But it turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
