Water

"So, first we're gonna look for a spring. We probably won't find one, but it's worth a shot. If we really have to, we'll collect some ocean water and distill it." said Rohan.

I didn't really know what he was talking about but he must know what he's doing.

“Before we set out, we need to search for some plastic bottles that might’ve gotten washed up onto the shore. We’ll fill them up with water if we find a spring,” explained Rohan.

We split up and scanned the shore for some plastic bottles. I found two, both filled with sand. We met back up and all together we found seven bottles. Better than nothing. We set out into the jungle. I had no idea what the scale of this island was, but the jungle looked like it went on forever. I was afraid we might get lost but I looked up and saw Rohan marking trees with a rock he picked up off of the ground.

He looked back at Zentsu and me, “Toshiro, Zentsu, pay attention to these marks, they’ll show you the way back if we get separated or lost.”

“Copy that,” I replied.

We trudged on for what seemed like forever. My mouth was so dry that there was no longer any spit in it. I assumed it was the same for the other guys. The only thing that kept me going was the small hope that we would find a spring. After walking for what I assumed was another half hour, I heard a familiar sound. It was the sound of running water. Zentsu looked at me with a big goofy grin on his face. He heard it too. Rohan looked to the right.

“Follow me,” he said.

We walked about five minutes to the right and there it was, a spring. We kneeled down excitedly and cupped our hands to sip some water out of them. To my surprise, the water was even nice and cold. This was like a dream come true. We now had a source of water. We rinsed out the sand-covered bottles and filled them up to the brim. After sipping some more water, we started back to where we came from, following the markings on the trees. All three of us were happy. I whistled a little tune as I scanned the jungle. Crunch. The sound of sticks breaking as if they were being stepped on came from behind us.

“What the fuck was that?” I asked.

Rohan, Zentsu, and I were all dead silent, carefully observing the area around us. Then I saw movement. I couldn’t tell what it was. All I saw was a dark figure moving faster than a normal human should, and it was coming after us.

“RUN!” I screamed.

We all took off in a mad dash. It was the fastest I have ever ran in my entire life. The adrenaline had taken over and I ran as fast as I could without paying any attention to my surroundings. Just as I heard an inhumane screech from close behind me I tripped over a tree root. I slammed into the ground face first, getting a mouthful of dirt. I tried to get back up but I was paralyzed with fear. I heard steps rapidly approaching me from behind. Something grabbed my foot and started dragging me.

“HELP! ROHAN! ZENTSU! ANYONE! AHHHHHHHH!” I was screaming for my life.

Footsteps approached me from the front. It was Rohan wielding a spear. He lunged towards whatever was dragging me and stabbed it. The thing let out a shriek and ran away. Rohan looked down at me and helped me up.

“Thanks man, you saved me,” I told him.

“It’s cool man, I wasn’t gonna let you get killed,” he replied.

“So what the fuck was that?” I asked him.

“I have no fucking clue,” he responded.

That was the first time I’ve seen Rohan look scared. Even when he first woke up in the middle of nowhere he didn’t look afraid. It would take something really fucked up to get him shaken like that.

“Cmon,” he said.

We walked back to the shore where Zentsu was waiting.

“Oh thank God you guys are okay,” he said while hugging both of us.

“Easy, man,” I told him.

Rohan explained to him what happened. I asked Rohan to describe what the creature looked like. He got up, grabbed a stick, and started drawing in the sand. Me and Zentsu were in awe, not only at Rohan’s art skills, but at the thought that this was a real thing that we had just encountered. We all sat down in the sand and started to discuss our next plan of action.
