delicate

Walking through the town she saw and heard many things, but only one in particular stuck out to her. There was a couple, young, in love… you could tell by the way they looked at each other, the way he watched her when he knew she wasn’t looking. They both looked happy. She didn’t know why they stood out to her, but they did… so she followed them. For days she hid outside their house so she could learn more.

The girl was selfish, yet selfless when it came to her lover. In public, she walked around confidently. She knew she was beautiful, everyone did. She was kind to those who deserved it and cold to those she didn’t approve of. She always had a smile on her face, her laugh was a calm melody. Everyone looked at her like she was delicate, perhaps she was, but she portrayed herself as someone omnipotent. When she was with her lover, there was a subtle change;she didn’t walk as confident, her smile seemed… backwards, almost like a frown.

Her lover, on the other hand, seemed bolder around her. It was like somehow he was more in control of himself. He laughed and gave her affection like no one else in the world could stop him. But when he was alone she noticed something strange… everyone looked at him in loath. He looked miserable, like a piece of him was missing. He barely spoke, or looked up from the ground. He dragged his feet and slumped his shoulders everywhere he went.

They were both a mystery she wanted to solve… and she planned on it. She “accidentally” ran into both of them, separately of course. Oddly enough, the girl didn’t even give her the time of day. She merely walked away with a piercing glare.

On the other hand, he was the one to apologize. After introducing herself, they ended up walking to get a coffee. He told her all about himself and his lover. He hated himself, but he also said his lover makes him feel like a different person. Someone better than who he is without her. “It’s like i had finally found my other half and now I’m whole.” He said he would be lost without her, she brought colour to his gray life. He admitted to making mistakes and hurting her, but he also said he never did it again.

He loved her, so much that he often forgot about his sadness and the world around him. He was empty, numb, until she was by his side again. Eventually he had to leave, but he promised they’d speak again. Everything he had said about his lover was vague, except one thing. “I hope i make her as happy as she makes me… i fear i only make her sad.”

She tried countless times to get the girl to even acknowledge her, all of her attempts failed. When she had finally given up, the girl tapped her shoulder and said “i thought you’d never stop. What made you finally decide to?” She didn’t know how to respond to the girl, so she changed the subject instead. After several more attempts, she finally got her to open up a bit.

She was egotistical, it wasn’t until she met her lover that she started caring about someone other than herself. “He was always so kind to me… to everyone. He always seemed so sullen, i never understood his kindness.” She fell in love with him after she fell into a depression that consumed her. He was the only one who helped. “I was drowning and he jumped in after me knowing I’d drag him down with me…” he saved her, he made her feel like she was predictable;he always knew how to help her.

Eventually, they got together and it changed her life. She had always been so happy,it wasn’t until she met him that she realized how truly miserable you could feel. “He hated himself, but he loved me.” He hurt her, but not physically. She had started to hate herself after she met him. She had become so depressed over the years because of him and she couldn’t stop it. “It’s like we switched roles… i look at myself and i see how sad and miserable i look. But he gets happier everyday…” she was crying but her beauty never faded.

“If he makes you so unhappy, why are you still with him?” She stopped crying immediately, “i love him, and I’ll so anything i can to keep this sadness from consuming him again.” She looked off in the distance, avoiding eye contact, “It’s going to destroy you.” She sighed, her voice quivered but all she said was “i know.”
