Chapter One:
I tossed the controller aside as I breathed out a sigh of defeat as I got up to get a glass of water since there is a minute before my character respawns.
When I got back I saw that the timer has been reset for a minute.
“You died right after respawning! It was hilarious,” my friend chuckled out when he saw me walk back next to him.
I bet that ‘my friend’ actually friendly fired at the respawned character as a joke while I was out getting a glass.
I tried keeping the suspicion out of my eyes giving a fake laugh, “I wish I could have seen it. It must have been funny!” While I quietly played with my phone, opening an app I bought previously to recount my gameplay and to record the backstabbing friend’s antics. I watched the video of the last minute after the respawn. I knew it!! “Hey, you didn’t happen to have recorded the gameplay? I would love to see how funny it was,” I responded with an evil smile.
“No, why would I? We aren’t on a quest or anything amazing. Did you really want to be embarrassed and watch the video that much?” he chuckled out teasingly.
I know he wouldn’t normally have recorded the gameplay when we are just messing around at common spawn areas, but I asked anyways to seal his route of escape from denying the antics he pulled.
“You know it would be really embarrassing if it was an AOE divine tribulation storm used to kill off the mob had instead ‘missed’. That would look like a real newbie NOOB mistake,” I responded coolly.
“Hmm? Why would anyone use an AOE divine tribulation storm against this mob? That would be a waste, but certainly higher tiered than a NOOB could use,” he responded wistfully while squinting his eyes. He pushed up his glasses a tiny bit with a playful smile, “Hah! Your character died again.”
“What?!” I looked up to see the timer was reset for a minute again. How did I miss it? I was sure that the countdown was at five seconds while I was chatting!

“By the way it was NOT divine tribulation storm. But I guess you never heard of it! It’s called divine NOOB strike,” he playfully retorted as he soloed the boss.
“What there is no such thing as divine NOOB strike?! That’s a ridiculous lie!” I snorted in anger at the ridiculous barb that he sent at me.
“Well that makes you a newbie for not knowing. You can check the forum, as it exists you know? It was hard to get that skill you know?” He looks at me in mock disbelief that the lie was seen through.
I thought about how my friend even if he does purposely mislead with his words, but he doesn’t outright lie ever. I couldn’t remember a time that he spoken a bald faced lie, which caused me to sigh in resignation yet again. I decided to look at my phone to find this supposed “divine NOOB strike”. I instantly tossed the phone at the wall in anger. I was surprised and thankful that the phone was surprisingly sturdy with only a few paint scrapes on the side. If it was a real skill then the name really does say it all, but to obtain the skill is what truly caused me to be upset. “A thousand times…,” I muttered in anger, “you had the time to one-hit kill your friend’s character a thousand times to get a skill to one hit players that are 10 levels below you! I knew it! You did it on purpose!”
I didn’t remember a time where I was this angry. No, there was one time when the author of my favorite light novel went on hiatus right at the climax of the story! The author mysteriously stopped writing saying that it would be on hiatus for about three years, but it has been four years with no sign of the author picking up his pen to finish the story. Thinking about that hero gaming character that I loved from that story, that if I was him I would be able to defeat this ‘villainous’ friend! I should not have spoken up, and later regret the words that I boldly spouted, “I would defeat you a thousand times at every single game! If I was that hero I would make you face defeat with any game a thousand times over even if you were me friend!”
My friend pushed his glasses up saying, “Really? You would defeat me a thousand times when I never suffered loss?”
Little did I know that ‘my friend’ was thinking after I said those words.
“I think it is late and I will be heading out then,” he paused at my door smiling, “Do you want to bet what consequences would come if you made even one win over me?”
I thought hesitantly if he really would reset all my game characters if I actually did make a single win on him.
Rather, he didn’t imply anything yet I shuddered fearing the game data may not be safe after today’s incident.
“Ah,” I muttered defeated, “It was useless that I had videos of his friendly fire as he openly admitted. Darn it.”
