The man sighed "My mana control has had no improvement at all..." He said looking at the square crystal in his hand as he did his nightly patrol through the city.
"You know Fyn, no matter how many times you look at your stat crystal it won't change. If it could be improved it would've by now" Fara said walking alongside him.
Fyn chuckled "I thought girlfriends were supposed to be supportive"
"I am supportive. That's why I'm telling you the hard truth. Face it, your mana control isn't going to get better, besides you can still let out a rather large magic volley. You just can't aim it..." she trailed off as she saw a strange shape sticking out of an alley.
She froze, grabbing Fyn's shoulder to stop him while pointing "You see that?" He scanned the area and his eyes locked onto the shape "The hell is that?" he said.
The bizarre shape suddenly dipped back into the alley. They drew their swords "That thing was watching us" Fyn said and took off towards the alley with Fara trailing behind.
As they came around the corner they froze, seeing a man and a woman standing there chatting with each other. Fyn's eyes narrowed in suspicion as fara asked "Um... Did you two see anything just now?"
The couple looked confused as the man said "No, I don't think so..." Fara went to step forward to check the other end of the alley, but before she could Fyn grabbed her shoulder "Something is wrong with this"
Before she could respond, Fyn shoved her to the left as the woman's hand turned to a spike and shot out at her.
Fyn slashed the man's face making him stumble and sent the woman reeling backward with a kick as he backed up to check on Fara
"You ok?" he said glancing at her, watching her get up "Yeah... I think" she said. they both froze as the man's face stitch back together.
The man's mouth hung open as a deep distorted voice came out "How did you know?..." the man paused and glared at Fyn "You have mana vision... Fortunate child, but no matter. You will die here regardless"
As it finished its monologue, the man and the woman molded into each other becoming a massive 8ft tall human. Its face was blank, with no mouth, nose, eyes, or ears. It had extremely pale skin, and was hunched over like it was sick.
Fyn stared at the giant "Uh oh..." the giant shot forward towards Fyn with surprising speed.
*Whoosh* Fyn ducked as the giant's fist swung at his head and drove his sword through its leg. The giant raged at the wound "ROOOOAAAAAAR!"
The monster grabbed Fyn before he could yank his blade out and threw him, sending him skidding along the ground. As Fyn came to a stop the beast stomped down at him.
He reached up and caught the giant's foot with both of his hands. The giants head tilted in confusion "You must be rather sturdy"
All of the sudden a pair of arms wrapped around the giant's throat. It started to stumble around as Fara clung to it, she took out a dagger and started to rapidly plunge the blade into its chest. The giant reached back and slung her off, rearing its leg up to smash her.
Fara watched the foot descend, too fast to react to. Before it could land, a blur slammed into the giant's side, knocking it to the ground. Before it could get up Fyn slammed his blade through its chest, pinning it to the ground as it screeched in pain.
"I'm rather fast too, asshole" Fyn said and went to check on Fara "You ok?" He asked as he helped her up.
"Yeah, I'm fine. What the hell was that thing?" she asked, dusting herself off.
The dark voice responded from behind Fyn "I am an undead..."

They both turned toward the monster, it was now standing with the sword still in its chest "I thought I killed you?..." Fyn said as he pulled his dagger out.
The dark voice exploded into laughter "Hahahaha, you haven't even fought the real me yet"
The giant's body started to shift. Its bones breaking as its skin turned pitch black. Its legs bent backward like an animal's hind legs, its arms became long and spindly, and its hands and feet grew long black claws. Its face turned black, adding beady black eyes with red skin around them and a large black mane that surrounded its entire face.
It shot forward, its claws slicing through the air where Fyn and Fara just were. As the two dodged, the beast turned back and started after Fyn, its long claws swiping relentlessly as Fyn dodged all he could.
Fyn dodged most of the hits, earning a few cuts before he threw himself back from a large attack.
As Fyn backed away he threw his dagger at the beast's face. The beast caught it "Hahaha-"
The beasts laugh was cut off as Fyn used the knife as a distraction and sent a flying jump kick to the chest of the monster, sending it flying back.
"Who's laughing now!" Fyn said, running after the beast.
"Enough" The monster shot off the ground faster than Fyn could track and barreled into him. The beast pinned him and reared its clawed hand back to finish it.
*Shing* The beast's arm halted. A red line appeared on his throat as the beast grumbled "How?..."
The monsters head hit the ground before his arm came down. Fyn threw the rest of the body off of him and saw Fara standing there with a bloody sword.
"I think he's dead now" Fara said, helping Fyn up "I hope so... Thanks" Fyn said hugging her.
"That's what best friends are for" she giggled.

Guard Guild HQ
"How much you think we'll get for this?" Fara asked as we hauled the body back to the guild.
"honestly? Got to be worth a few gold. I've never seen anything like this in the city before" Fyn said as they approached the door to the guild.
They walked through the doors dragging the monster with a burlap cover over it. They arrived at the main desk and took a breath.
The receptionist looked up from her paperwork "Ah, Fyn and Fara, dashing and beautiful as always. What is it I can do for you today?"
Fyn chuckled as he pulled the cover off the beast "How much for this?"
People sitting around the guild instantly locked onto the beast, some of them even gasping. The receptionist kept her composure while eyeing the beast "Um... You'll have to give me a moment to contact the guild master"
The people that were sitting in the guild lounge started gathering around the body and chatting about it. They all quieted down as the guild master came down from his study.
As he reached the body he looked impressed. "How the hell did you two manage to kill a Tota?" He chuckled
Fyn told him the details of the encounter and then grinned "So... How much is it worth?"
The guild master examined the body for a moment "Hm... It seems to be a younger Tota. Was most likely stalking you to perform a tota ceremony, the tota takes someone alive to perform a ritual on. I've heard it's a very gruesome ordeal"
Continuing the examination he concluded "I'll give you three gold each" Their eyes widened as they stared at him.
"Why so much Mr. Ryder?" Fyn asked, getting ahold of himself.
Ryder chuckled "This monster is a menace. If left to do their rituals unimpeded they can become extremely powerful. Even to the point of gaining tier 4 spells. It was good you caught this one early. Though he was probably over 100 years old"
After collecting their bounty they practically skipped out of the door. Happy with their newly acquired wealth.
"I don't think I've ever held this amount of gold before" Fara said, looking at the pouch in her hand
"No, we have. Just indirectly. That big escort we did last year for the Estara family had a lot of gold in it. No one knew till it was delivered" Fyn said as he tossed the pouch up and down with one hand as they strolled down the cobbled street.
Fara stopped and said "Listen... I want to thank you for earlier. You saved my life for sure" then she wrapped her arms around his chest in a tight hug.
"No problem" he said, awkwardly patting her head and then chuckling.
She glared up at him "What's so funny?" he laughed harder while saying "You're so damn short" she huffed while letting him go "I'm not short, you're just tall... Asshole" she said in annoyance, then her face lightened as she started chuckling as well.
They continued their walk "Well this is me, I'll see you tomorrow Fyn" Fara said walking up to a brick townhouse.
Fyn waved her goodbye and continued to his place. A 2 story by the port that doubled as his mom's alchemy shop. The shop took up the entire ground floor, with the second floor being where his mom lived while he stayed in the attic
Walking up the stairs and through the front door he called out "Mom, I'm home!"
A series of thumps and crashes came from his mothers study, the door flew open as a red haired blur barreled out and into him, wrapping him in a hug.
"You were so late! I thought something happened..." she said on the verge of crying. Fyn chuckled "I'm fine mom. Just had a little entanglement"
She shoved him and started beating at his chest "What did I say! I told you the guard was too dangerous!" Fyn chuckled and blocked the onslaught.
"I can handle myself old woman" his mothers gaze shot to his face as she scowled.
"Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow" Fyn said in pain as his mother grabbed pinched one of his ears and pulled him down to stare at her glowering face
"What did you call me boy?" she said, malice infused into her voice. Fyn stared back with wide eyes and responded "Please don't kill me"
She giggled and let go "Anyways, tell me about your day"
They moved into the study so she could continue experiments at her alchemy table while Fyn explained what happened.
"Hmm... You killed a Tota, impressive. You are just like your father. Especially that black hair of yours" she said, ruffling his hair.
He chuckled and then went silent. Noticing this sudden change his mother asked "Something wrong Finny?" using the nickname she gave him usually gave him a chuckle but this time he still sat silent.
Fyn glanced at her with a troubled look in his eyes "That's the first time you've mentioned dad in year's..."
His mothers face took on a pained expression "I'm sorry honey. I didn't even think before I spoke" Quiet enveloped the room. Fyns face took on a more calm look before he asked "Why don't you ever talk about him? I know nothing about him"
His mother turned back to her alchemy table, resuming her experiments "It's not that simple Fyn"
He sighed "It would be if you just told me" she shook her while responding "No it wouldn't. Trust me, it would only complicate things"
Seeing his mother would say no more, he moved on and they continued chatting until he decided to sleep "Alright mom, I'm going to sleep. Need to be up early tomorrow"
After saying goodnight he climbed up into the attic where his room was. He didn't have much, just a typical bedroom.
Looking out the window, he contemplated his mother's words about his father "I wish she would just tell me already. At this point, I don't think I'll ever know"
Leaving the window, he felt exhausted. Falling into the bed, he was instantly asleep.
Out his window and across the street a shadow shifted on the roof of his neighboring buildings. Red eyes lit up the darkness and moonlight glinted from a set of fangs "Soon I will have what I want... And it will be delicious"
