Bonus Chapter 8.5: The silent reaper

The first day:

Charon stood overlooking the line of souls, as he had done so for millennia, silently observing, watching a sea of despair fear and anguish flow by. A peace came with such silence, it brought about clarity in the chaos of all things.

"Charonnnnnn!" The voice of a certain reaper broke the peace of silence, echoed across the desolate dunes. ""Charon, Charon, have you seen him?" The silent reaper does not acknowledge the call, nor does he sway from his duty. "Charon! Charon, you can’t ignore me. You love the company I bring." He drew closer.

Charon did not speak, for it was not his place to, but his actions spoke loud enough for the blonde idiot to understand. "Okay, I'll tell you what happened." Lucifer continued. "We have a new reaper, and... Gabriel said I could be his trainer." Charon merely nodded at the announcement, unsure of why Lucifer would come all this way just to tell him that. "My god he is a cutie. Raven hair, soft skin, a tight body and those eyes, oh those sanpaku eyes."

Charon turned away from Lucifer, attempting to escape his babbling. The endless prattle of Lucifer was becoming unbearable. "Sights to see." Lucifer continued, oblivious to Charon's disinterest. "Of course, he won't fall for my charm as easily as you have. He'll need to be broken in, like a stallion." Lucifer eyes lit up, thoughts running amuck going into overdrive.

Picking up the pace, Charon increased his stride, attempting to put more distance between himself and Lucifer. Speed became a light jog, then a sprint. Lucifer matched his pace, keeping up with Charon's efforts. "Where are we going?" Lucifer asked excitedly. "I wonder what outfit to get him? Should I go all out and dress him up in that outfit?" The reaper rambled on and on, childlike excitement infectious.

Charon stopped dead, turning to face the giddy reaper. However, he had vanished into thin air.

Lucifer appeared on top of the towering reapers head, blonde threads dangling in front of skull eyes. Charon gave a thumbs up, hoping Lucifer would accept his acknowledgement, hoping to resume his peace.

But alas, it fails; Lucifer continued speaking at a breakneck pace, his words coming out so fast; it was hard to make sense of what is being said. Lucifer's voice goes up and down in volume, reaching a fevered pitch before trailing off. Lucifer stopped abruptly, hopping down from his perch, walking away from the giant reaper.

"Do you think he has memories from his past?" His voice softer than before, more contemplative. "I doubt it. He has come and gone to many times. If anything, he'd be lucky to remember his previous life." Lucifer spoke with an odd tone of melancholy.

"But what can I do? The past is the past, we must look forward to the future. Speaking of which." Lucifer suddenly dropped the pensive mood, regaining his normal happy-go-lucky demeanour.

"The rumour around the dunes is that Eren is in line for the ring. Anything you care to share with you best friend in the whole wide wasteland?"

Charon did not acknowledge the question, there were rumours among the dunes that flowed into the mountain of death, whispers that even the mighty could not keep silent.

"I knew it; you're such a gossip." Clapping his hands excitedly, bouncing on his toes like a school girl.

Dismayed that Lucifer managed to deduce his secret from simple observation. The skull opened, almost wanting to speak; however, Lucifer stopped him.

"Oh, my it's nearly time. Always a pleasure Charon." Unveiling his wings. "I've got curriculum to prepare." Shooting through the air like an arrow, Lucifer flapped away leaving only a dust cloud behind.

Charon finally relaxed; peace so merited, silence of the waste a state of enjoyment.

The grey clouds that blanketed the sky, broke, opening to the field of stars above. Charon's eyes watched the scene unfold, the multitudes of colours changing constantly.

"I'm...glad...you...have...found...your...smile." Charon whispered to the stars. His voice coming deep within the bones, words carried on the wind, flowing across the dunes.
