PROLOGUE

On the continent of Phayun, there are two types of souls: Bound, and Free.

Anyone fortunate to be born as what is colloquially known as a Soulbound is given a great gift. That of resurrection. Any who possess this trait are trained in a ritual, that allows them to create a point at which they will return if they die of anything other than old age.

Upon return, they are healed to full health, with all their previous memories intact, and are capable of carrying items back with them. Soulbound are those who leave the walls of The Capitol, hunting adventure and glory, whether they want to or not. The King's royal decree forced any who can return in such a manner to take on jobs that take place outside the city, or would be considered life-threatening.

His generosity extended to letting any choose their own path.

That was how my journey working at the Surveyors Guild began. They did good work. We mapped dungeons and scouted locations for Adventurers. The ones who bore that title used the up-to-date information to plan hunts and raids against the various monsters that lived across the continent.

Our motto was thus: To map the world, and guide the worthy! A motto we were told to fulfill, no matter how many times we died in the attempt.

My name is Leiko, and this is the story about my adventurers in the area surrounding the Capital, and my numerous and unfortunate ends.

If you are reading this, there are included illustrations on each monster encountered, so you can avoid the same fates that befell me.

Always remember. No matter how they look, they live outside the walls for a reason.
