Prologue

Silas Hardt’s only motivation to continue onto Grad school was his Dad’s imminent decision to pass down to him his billion-dollar company. Of course, a high position as the next CEO of the company doesn’t come easy. Not even as the apparent eldest son of the CEO and founder.

His final year of Grad school proved to be a walk in the park for Silas, but the looming pressure to be above every one who had been working for his father’s company for years and deserved the position more than him with certainly not easy. He had to find an internship—a high position of that matter, to prove he indeed deserved the position and he wasn’t just handed the company simply because he was the Boss’s kid.

The doors of Berkeley Industries and Co. were wide open, just sitting there, waiting for the overqualified Silas to strut right in. And indeed he took it, and they didn’t even ask for an interview. It was his first day on the job, and even overqualified Silas was a little shaky. No, we don’t say that here. He was excited about what his job had to offer. Surely the position of HR Director seemed… giving? His whole life had been riding on this moment, he was going to walk in, take the stand, and owned it. It was his perfect opportunity to gather experience and prove to his father he deserved the position. The position of CEO he’d been dreaming of since he learned what colors were.

Silas strutted into the building, as cocky as one could be when they applied for a high position and got it immediately. Only for his proud smirk to drop, only for him to realize what a maze this building was. He glanced down at the piece of paper, a random scrap of paper he tore off from his father’s office notes, with the number 207 written on it. That’s great, that’s the room he is supposed to go to for his first ever meeting. If only his small brain could figure out how to get to the second floor. God, it was confusing, and it was all the more embarrassing for him to walk pointlessly in circles around the lobby.

Silas glanced around, maybe a nice person could direct him to the second floor. Oh look, a proper-looking woman that seemed to know what she was doing. She only seemed proper to him because of her slicked-back bun, round glasses, and smart outfit.

He was hesitant at first, she was so focused on the document in her hand that she would probably run right into him if he stepped in front of her. So instead, his little brain stopped her on the side.

“Excuse me, ma’am—”

She turned to him, with an odd sour look. Maybe she was not the nicest person he could’ve picked. Silas screamed inside, he may have graduated from Columbia but god he had poor taste. She looked him up and down—then opened her mouth for a second  like she was going to say something, but instead, she closed it again and shook her head. Perhaps he had something on his shirt? Or maybe a piece of lettuce in his teeth. That couldn’t be it, he double-checked—no—he triple-checked this morning for any imperfections, and of course, he had none.

“I’m sorry, I thought you were… someone else”

She took off her glasses, and there he realized she looked like someone he knew. A girl he knew from his time at Columbia. A girl who took his heart and spit on it, it was a girl he despise. He hated her with a burning passion, one that he’d rather scoop out his eyes than see her again—Harper… Harper… fucking… Ramsey.

“Silas… Hardt? I thought—I thought you were studying law!”

Indeed she was right, they were both studying law back in college. Until Silas realized his dream of becoming a CEO of a billion-dollar company could easily come from his father’s wealth. He figured early on in his university life that perhaps Law was not the right path for him. He was right after all because they were both in law and were now at the same company.

“Harper… Ramsey,” he said her name between his teeth. The thought of her here, just her presence made it unbearable. Was it too late now? Was he going to back out of his job now?

Of course, he wasn’t, he wasn’t going to let a stupid girl from his past deter him from his dream position. That was not a Silas thing. He was just going to have to push through, once he got the job and settled in—he could just ignore her. He took the piece of paper, now weirdly crumbled and falling apart in his hand, and handed it to her.

“Can you take me there?” He mumbled under his breath, the last thing he wanted for his perfect day was to get lost 8 minutes before his work starts. And even worse—to have Harper Ramsey, take him to his meeting. God, if the day couldn’t get any worse.
