Nial of Grennport needs to get out of town because he's killed someone in self-defense.  He embarks on a pilgrimage to a magical shrine across the desert with ten other pilgrims.  When people start to die, everyone suspects everyone else, and it becomes immediately clear that no one is what they claim to be.
