Dead Awkward
A whole new world!

A whole new world!

What time is it? Kain thought as he lay on the ground groggily. He had a massive headache, like when he got too little sleep from staying up too late, and he was all to familiar with them. He tried to push himself up, resisting the urge to fall back down and continue sleeping. He failed. He fell back down, hitting his head against his pillow.

Instead he was now fully awake from hitting his heads into solid ground. Where the hell was he? He was surrounded by trees, in a clearing, and in his pyjamas, with grumpy attitude to spare. One that quickly left him as he realised that everything felt too real to be a dream. He quickly got up, looking around for a sign of modern civilisation. There was none. Kain was baffled. He lived a comfortable life in a city, and while he was by no means rich, he was never short of money either. Could it be kidnap? No, there could be no motive.

His train of thoughts was interrupted by a loud roar. Out of the bushes came a less than happy bear. Before Kain could even understand what was happening the bear tackled him crushing him into the ground and bit into his shoulder.

“Argh! Fucking shit! Fuck! Oww!” Kain screamed in pain. The sheltered city boy was clearly not experienced enough to tolerate pain like this so he promptly passed out. Before the bear could finish its kill, a man charged out of the bushes with a roar before biting the bear by its thick neck and snapping his jaws shut, breaking the bears neck and killing it.

The man or more accurately, half-crocodile half-man thing grabbed the limp body of the bear and Kain and proceeded to rush back through the bushes, leaving behind the blood filled clearing.

Kain awoke to find himself on top of something furry. Looking down he saw he was on top of some sort of bear rug there were a few other bear rugs on the ground of a wooden floor. There was a large hole in place of a door so he tried to look out the door only to wince in pain when his shoulder throbbed painfully. He forced himself to look at his shoulder only to be surprised to see it wrapped in leaves. He decided not to touch the leaf bandages, instead slowly raising himself off the ground and onto his feet. It was at this moment that a man walked the door hole.

“Hello?” Kain tentatively asked, the man gave him a small nod and proceeded to walk back through the door hole. “Hey! Wait! Where are you going?” Kain called out to no avail. What the fuck? Kain thought as he continued to get back on his feet. After getting up

he managed to walk, thankful that his legs were still alright, towards the door hole. Only to bump into an absolute wall of a man.

The man was massive, maybe two and a half metres tall and he was thiccc. He had a body like mountain, thick corded muscle filled his body and yet he seemed slim, muscular in the way of a swimmer. He had a mane of dirty and dark green hair and his eyes were yellow and slit like. His tanned skin felt rough when Kain had bumped into him, and his skin had a strange bumpy look to them yet seemed orderly. Kain was not quite sure why, but the man seemed to be larger than he seemed, like he was better simply because he was.

The man spoke, in a deep voice that commanded attention, “What is your name boy? What have you Bonded with?”

Kain felt slightly intimidated and murmured out,” Kain, Sir. I’m not sure what you mean by that second question?”

“Is that how you want to do things boy?” The man spoke, his voice growing deeper with an edge to it, disregarding the name of the boy.

“I’m sorry? I’m, uh. Not quite sure what you mean?” Kain hurriedly replied the man that looked like he could and would snap him like a twig.

“You think you’re funny?” The man growled, his presence growing.

“No, uh, I mean, I don’t know what you mean by bonded…” Kain’s voice trailed off as he realised the man’s presence was not the only thing growing. The man grew larger and the strange bumps on his skin discoloured, becoming green or white as his face elongated.

“What the fuck are you? Are you some sort of were-croc or something? I swear man, I have no clue what you’re talking about!” Kain said as he fell back down, before yelping in pain as he accidently placed weight on his injured shoulder. The man seemed genuinely surprised at the boy’s reaction, slowly reverting back to a more humanoid form.

“You don’t know what a Bonded is?” The man questioned.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you, you fucker! Wait, shit, sorry, I mean yes, Sir” Kain’s temper flared a bit before he could reign it back in.

“Where are you from boy? How could you not know what a Bonded is?” The man said unfazed by the boy’s swearing.

“I don’t think I’m from this world…” Kain said as much to the man as to himself, realising that it was unlikely he was still on earth.

“What does that mean?” The man said, growing more confused as the simple questions led to more questions instead of equally simple answers.

“I don’t know anything, so could you perhaps, tell me what’s going on? Maybe think of it as explaining to a baby?” Kain replied, feeling slightly humiliated and frustrated by how ignorant he was.

“Alright then, the world we are on was created by a being with a lot of power, we call a god.”

Kain was starting to regret the “explaining to a baby part” as the man would likely explain any word he believed to be to difficult to understand, but Kain felt too awkward to interrupt.

“This god created the beasts, amongst them was the human, his finest creation. He created humans to speak with, to watch and to interact with as the god was bored and lonely. While the humans were weak compared to the other beasts, the god gave them something the other beasts did not have. Wisdom, the power to learn and grow faster than any other beast. Under the guidance of the god, humans grew stronger and stronger, and with it their greed. Eventually a human wondered, if the other beasts weaker than us can provide us with fur and meat, what could the god provide as with?

The approached the god and stabbed him in the heart with a spear, a weapon the god had taught the humans to make. It turned out that the god was merely a shell for the real god to use to interact with us. The energies of the shell burst out and becoming mana, an energy source that help to speed up evolution.

In the god’s rage, he denied the humans the ability to evolve using mana, he said,” I have made a mistake, believing that my creations would be without flaws, I will give all creatures an opportunity to prove their worth. Except the humans for they have already wasted the opportunity I have given them. I will stop interfering and let nature run its course, but should a creature grow strong enough to join me, I will come for it, bring it with me back to paradise along with the people it chooses, even the humans.”

The humans did everything they could think of to get back to the god’s good graces but it was futile. They tried to harness mana to evolve, only to find that it treated the humans like a dirty rag, and avoided entering their bodies, but seemed to gather around humans to mock their inability to use it. The humans could do nothing but watch as the beasts continued to thrive growing stronger and smarter.

Eventually, the beasts realised the peculiarity of the humans and started to enslave them. The humans were round up like sheep, except even the sheep had surpassed them at this point, to act as a beacon to gather mana for the beasts to use. And while the beasts were smart, they were not without flaws as they liked to mistreat the humans under them, as a form of petty revenge against the time when humans mistreated them. The humans were even raped by the beasts that found them attractive, the only saving grace was at least a human-beast child was impossible due to the mana incompatibility. The beasts had inherited the human’s cruelty and the humans felt it. Humans were even treated as a form of currency, with special ones that were more beautiful, stronger, or attracted more mana, being more valuable.

Eventually the first mage was born, and magic became widespread. Magic was a power born from controlling the mana within the creature having it exit the body and then, converting it into a different form. Yet again the beasts grew even stronger while the humans were left behind. At least beasts could only pursue so much of either their physical evolution or magical growth before the mana they had could no longer meet their needs so while those that used magic were more versatile and stronger, their physical strength was neglected

As time passed the hatred towards humans faded, and beasts that treated them well appeared. Amongst them, was one that treated the humans too well. The beast was a dog or at least descended from one. It was a large 30 metre creature amongst the strongest in terms of combat power due to its strong use of magic. The dog grew fascinated with a beautiful female human under his care. He named her Amour for at that point humans had lost the right to use names that were not numbers. He grew to love her but was rational enough to know that nothing could be born of it. He still persisted in the futile love, teaching her and educating her, giving her knowledge of how to speak and write.

The beasts had evolved their vocal cords to that of humans for their own language did not quite convey enough information and other beasts not of their race could not understand them. In order to prevent a race from not having to change their vocal cords, the animals picked the humans vocal cord to mimic. Hence, the dog was able to seamlessly communicate with the human female. The female grew to love him back, so she suggested that he find a was to change his form to that of a human. After many years the dog found a way to change his mana to change his physical form. He had become human. However, he found that his mana refused to enter the Amour, meaning he still could not have her conceive his child.

He needed to find a way to tick his mana into thinking Amour was not a human. He used his strong command over mana to force it into her body but found that the mana simply would not stay so he thought to give her a body of a beast. He forced the mana to evolve her, making her evolve like a beast. In the process, his mana mixed into her evolution causing her to evolve like a dog, gaining traits from both dogs and humans. She became the first beast human and mana was able to enter her body. Eventually the second beast human was born. The second beast human was a blessed boy and inherited the ability to attract mana from his mother, but kept his father’s ability to absorb mana. The boy was named Miracle for in his parent’s eyes he was a miracle.

However, peace was not to be had as eventually the other beasts found out what the dog had done. The dog sent his family away as he stayed behind to stall for time against the angry beasts that mobbed him. He had grown weak from using his mana to evolve mana so he was no match for the angry beasts. Eventually Cerberus perished. However, he had managed to attract the attention of the god by giving humans a way to use mana. The god was touched by Cerberus so he raised the corpse of the dog as an undead, and decreed that all creatures that passed with a great grudge or unfulfilled desire will become an undead. The undead Cerberus fought for days before his body broke down and he finally passed on.

Cerberus had brought enough time and his family had managed to escape. Miracle reappeared many years later and went on hunt down the beasts that mistreated humans and used them to create beast humans. He used his prodigious mana control to rip the mana out of the beasts body and used it to evolve other humans. Eventually he grew so strong that the god once again returned to bring him to paradise. Miracle left with the god alone requesting that instead of bringing anyone with him, the god should allow all humans to have the ability to Bond with an animal of their choice. The god agreed but in exchange mana would no longer be attracted to humans.

With their new powers, humans were able to gain power, although at a slower rate than other beasts. And that concludes the history of the world.”
