Chapter 12: Emily Taylor

Chapter 12: Emily Taylor

"Let's go to the secret hideout after school today," Michael suggested. "I'm sure our moms would let us do homework there."

"Sounds great!" David replied.

The boys were currently in homeroom. Mr. Langford had put on some music; the singer was crooning about a sweet child, creating a relaxed atmosphere in the art-filled room. Meanwhile, Mr. Langford had started drawing something in a big sketchbook at his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration. David watched with a mix of curiosity and admiration. He couldn't quite make out what Mr. Langford was sketching, but the teacher's quirky personality always delighted him.

"Oh, a secret hideout," an unfamiliar voice startled David. "Sounds interesting."

David looked back to see a girl leaning close to them. Her face was so near that he couldn't help but stare into her hazel eyes, which seemed to hold a world of stories. She held his gaze for a moment, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and a hint of mischief, before straightening up. As she moved her hair behind her ear, David noticed the chestnut brown locks were interrupted by a bold streak of neon purple. It was striking and gave her an edgy, unique look. Flustered, David quickly turned his gaze back to the desk, his cheeks burning with an inexplicable embarrassment. He couldn't understand why he felt so self-conscious, but there was something about her that made his heart race.

"You, to the front," Mr. Langford pointed at the girl with a displeased look on his face.

She took one last look at the boys and whispered, "I want to see this hideout," before walking up to the front with a wry smile.

Mr. Langford's stern look quickly softened as he turned to the class. "Everyone listen!" The juxtaposition of his loud voice in the hushed room snapped everyone's attention to him. "This is Emily Taylor. She had to start the year late due to some personal matters. Make sure to be nice."

Emily gave a mock curtsey before coming back to sit next to Michael. David couldn't help but laugh at how awkward she looked. "So, what are you up to?" she asked pointedly. "You mentioned something about a secret hideout."

David was left speechless for a moment. He had tried to talk to the other kids in class, but everyone besides Michael seemed indifferent to him and he quickly gave up. But this girl was being direct.

"Yeah, our secret hideout. We found it one summer. It's really cool." David abruptly shut his mouth as he realized his anxiety was going out of control.

"It's a cave we found in the woods behind his house," Michael finished.

Emily's eyes widened with genuine interest. "A cave? That sounds amazing! Can I come with you guys after school?"

David exchanged a quick glance with Michael, who shrugged and nodded. "Sure, why not," David said, trying to sound casual. "But you have to keep it a secret."

Emily grinned. "Deal. I won't tell anyone. This sounds like it's going to be fun."

"Why do you do that?" David asked, pointing to Emily's hand. She looked down, confused, almost as if she wasn't controlling her fingers drumming the table.

"Oh, this? It's subconscious, I guess. Playing the piano so much I kind of just do it automatically," she replied, studying her hand as if she were a scientist recording a weird phenomenon.

"You play the piano?" Michael interjected. "That's so cool!"

"Not just the piano. I know guitar and am trying to learn drums."

"Wow, that's impressive," David said, feeling a bit awed. "I don't think I could ever learn how to play an instrument."

"You should still try," Emily suggested. "How do you know you will fail if you never even start?"

The bell rang, signaling the end of homeroom. Mr. Langford looked up from his sketchbook and smiled at the class. "Alright, everyone, have a good day. Now get out of my class!"

Throughout the day, David found it hard to concentrate on his classes. His mind kept wandering back to the cave and how Emily had seemed genuinely excited to see it. During lunch, the three of them sat together, sharing stories. David learned that Emily had moved from another state due to her dad's job and that she loved exploring new places. She even had a bit of a daredevil streak, having tried rock climbing and zip-lining.

After the final bell rang, David and Michael met up with Emily in front of the school. "I just need to stop by my house to grab some food," Michael said. "I'll meet you guys at the entrance to the woods."

"Okay, sounds good," David replied. "Emily, do you want to come with me to meet my mom? She's probably waiting in the car."

"Sure," Emily said with a smile.

They walked out to the parking lot, where Julia was waiting. She smiled warmly when she saw David approaching with a new friend.

"Hi, Mom," David said. "This is Emily. She's new at school."

"Hello, Emily," Julia said, extending her hand. "It's nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too, Mrs...," Emily hesitated, shaking her hand.

"It's Ms. Carter," Julia explained.

"Mom, can we go to the hideout?" David asked.

"Of course. Is Michael not coming?"

"He is, he just went home to get food. We will do our homework and be back before dinner."

Julia drove them home as they chatted about their classes and interests. David found it easy to talk to Emily and enjoyed her company. As Julia pulled into the driveway, David raced to the backyard, Emily following close behind. Michael was already there with a backpack full of snacks.

"Alright, just be careful and don't stay out too late," Julia called after them.

"Ready?" Michael asked while grinning at David.

"Ready," David and Emily replied in unison.
