Chapter 2 - Black Swan, II

Chapter 2 - Black Swan, II

“How many times do I have to tell you, I saw two motherfucking dragons go at it, one being a corpse on my property and the other one god knows where.”

It had been around 15 minutes since the strange encounter with the dragons, Michael looked around the room at the men in suits around him. This wasn’t a normal circumstance, not that the two dragons already disclosed that. The man Michael was currently talking to seemed more important than the other men, he was tall, with short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. The way the man looked at Michael with an emotionless stare, like the man felt he was talking to someone….. unimportant to his reality.

“And that’s all you saw, nothing more nothing less?” The man’s voice seemed to slide off his tongue like a snake. He seemed reptile-like, maybe that’s where all the guys with tinfoil hats get the idea from.

“Yes that’s all I have, what do you expect me to say?”

“If that’s all “ The man was cut off by yelling outside the home, a man, also in a suit, waving papers around as he ran into the house.

“Hey, McCoy, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!? This is nowhere in your jurisdiction.” The man who ran in was different, cheerful but professional.

The man, now known as McCoy, turned around to look at the newcomer, a glare on his face when he did. “What do you mean ‘jurisdiction?’ I was just doing my job.”

“No McCoy, this is a distortion. This is in my right as the director of DART.”

McCoy clicked his tongue, walking away from the table Michael was seated at. Michael was more confused than anything at the moment, running his fingers through his hair as he watched the “Director of DART” approach him.

“Michael Keith right? Name’s Jeff Johnson, my friends call me JJ,” he said as he sat down, pulling the chair away from the table, a loud screeching sound echoing in the room. “Can you tell me what you know about this incident? I need all that I can get. It’s clear to me that you are very confused. Once you tell me what happened, I’ll let you in on what’s going on.”

Michael felt that Jeff was trusting, not enough to call him anything other than a guy inside his home. “I was moving the cattle from one pasture to another and boom, a dragon came outta fuckin nowhere and burnt my beef. My sister and I freaked out and ran for our lives, the dragon hot on our tails. When we thought we were about to die, another dragon came outta nowhere and started fighting the other one. We listened to them fight for a while until the sound died out. We then looked out the window and saw the thing dead on the grass. End of story.”

Jeff nodded his head, writing something down in a notebook. “I’m assuming your sister is the woman on the couch at the moment?”

Michael turned around to look, seeing Lucifer sitting on the couch, biting her nails and bouncing her leg, anxious as always. She was surrounded by men in suits, Michael could only sympathize with her, he understood what she was feeling. “Yeah, Lucifer, my sister.”

Jeff raised an eyebrow. “Lucifer huh? Strange name. Anyway, I said I would tell you what was going on if you gave me some info. What you just saw is called a distortion. Reality bending anomalies stretch and break the world as we know it. These two dragons are distortions, they shouldn’t exist yet they do. The reason they came here, I know all too well.”

Michael became confused, looking at Jeff with a raised eyebrow and a small frown. “What do you mean?”

“Michael Keith, your entire ranch has a distortion in it.” Jeff closed the notebook and put his arms on the table, interlocking his fingers. “At my organization called DART, we classify distortions and the thing living on your land is at the top of the classification, it's a Deus class distortion.”

Michael’s eyes widened, the blood draining from his face as he received this information. From Michael’s point of view, it seemed as though his world was flipped upside down. He breathed in sharply and rubbed his face, sweat beginning to bead on his head. “I- I have no idea what to say. First, it’s dragons and now you’re telling me my land is being inhabited by a dangerous reality-bending monster?”

Jeff sighed, looking around the room and leaning forward. “Look, I know how it seems. A god-like entity holding out in your land. Sounds pretty bad right?” Jeff cracked his knuckles and looked around again, waving his hand and signaling to all the other men to leave, once they did, he spoke again. “This entity hasn’t done anything, not that I know of as of right now. We only know it’s here because of a huge spike in MF, also known as Mens Fluctus. It’s essentially an energy that all organic life produces, invisible to the naked eye. An energy from the brain more or less and when this energy gathers itself up, it creates monstrosities or organisms that break the laws of reality and science, like these dragons that should not exist. It’s responsible for things like bigfoot and the loch ness monster, both of which DART has captured and contained.”

Michael watched a smile appear on Jeff's face, not reassuring him in any way. He felt as though a ton of information was being dumped on him. Michael also felt that this conversation was going to end with something he didn’t want, something that would require him to shut up and be quiet.

“I get the feeling you’re gonna kill me after telling me all this shit,” Michael said, his hands beginning to shake and sweat beading on his brow.

Jeff looked at him for a few moments and laughed out loud, smacking the table and wiping his eye with his index finger. “I have no reason to do that Michael. Not when I need people like you.”

Michael’s face shifted, turning into one with mild confusion, questioning what Jeff was talking about. “What do you mean ‘need me?’”

Jeff lifted a briefcase and pulled out a couple of manilla folders, something was up. He carefully opened one of them and began to read the contents. “Michael Keith was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the tender age of 13. Reported seeing a dark figure in the corner of a room and constant whispering in his ear.”

Michael’s eyes widened, nervousness growing as it began to flood his mind, like the plug to a boat had been pulled.

“Lucifer Keith, diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, Anxiety, and Depression. Wow, the whole package huh? Attempted to end her life a total of 34 times! Yeesh.”

Michael’s nervousness quickly changed to anger when Jeff mentioned Lucifer’s problems. His fists began to subconsciously ball up and his teeth began to grit. “What do you want from us man? We ain’t done nothing to you.”

Jeff closed the folder, leaning back into the chair with a smile on his face. “Mental illness can sometimes be a side effect of the brain producing too much MF. I look for those kinds of people, regardless of background, and recruit them to my team of very talented individuals. You see, when this occurrence happens, the one of MF being produced too much, it means the brain can harness the MF and well, turn it into a distortion, one that said person can use.”

Michael seemed to ease down a little bit, relaxing his hands and jaw. “And how do you know that Lucifer and I are capable of this occurrence?”

“Because I can sense it and you, my good cowboy friend, have a metric ton of it flowing out of your head.”

“But why us, why not the guy over on the next farm?” Michael was getting anxious, wanting to know everything that he could yet scared of what he was about to find out.

“Well, we start by greeting this god on your land. It hasn’t done anything yet and we have been observing it for the past decade. With your permission sir, we would like to build a base of operations somewhere on your land. Not that you have the cattle to use it anymore.”

Michael thought for a moment, what should he do. Out of nowhere, Michael’s life was flipped upside down. Way too fast for his brain to wrap his head around everything. Just then, he heard a whisper in his, too silent to hear but just enough to understand. Nodding his head, Michael spoke. “Yes, I’ll allow you to do what you want on my land. I’m not sure if my father would want it that way but, as you said, I don’t have any cattle to herd on it anymore.”

Jeff pumped his fist and laughed, sounding very excited he could do his job. He reached over the table and began to shake Michael’s hand aggressively. “Thank you, Mr. Keith, it has been ages since my department has done anything. This is a real game-changer.” Jeff turned to face the door and yelled out of it towards the other men in suits. “Alright boys, it's go time. Start with the dragon and we’ll make the base afterward.”

He looked at Michael with a smile on his face and walked back to the table. “You know, just for your cooperation and your possible addition to the team Mr. Keith, I’ll have my R&D boys whip something up for ya with that dragon.”

Michael didn’t know what he was getting himself into but smiled nonetheless, trying to seem like he was looking forward to the coming series of events. “Well, I’m not sure you’ll be calling me Mr. Keith after I join this so-called team.”

Jeff nodded his head and ran out of the house, yelling at all the agents to do what they needed to do. While this was happening, Lucifer walked up to Michael and kept her arms crossed, avoiding eye contact with him as she sniffled. “Mikey, is this a good idea?”

Michael sighed, he didn’t know what to say to Lucifer, he did all of this on a whim and to mostly find out what he assumed was his father hiding more secrets from him. “Yes but here’s the thing Lucy, I heard them, even though I’ve been on meds for the past 6 years.”

Lucifer’s eyes widened as she grabbed a chair and sat down next to Michael, the light above them buzzing over the reigning silence. “Wait, the ones from your schizophrenia?”

Michael slowly nodded his head, turning to face Lucifer. “Yeah but the funny thing is, it said the strangest thing, it said ‘come and find me oh Angel of Death.’” Michael began to worry more than he already was. The stress of life piling on top of him throughout the years makes him feel horrible. “Lucy I- I don’t know what to do, I just said yes to them on a whim, I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing. I’m just out of high school and now I’m being recruited by a secret government organization because I have schizophrenia? I just can’t.”

Lucifer watched as Michael covered his face with his hands, visibly freaking out. She slowly reached over and put her hand on Michael’s shoulders, rubbing them a little, attempting to be reassuring. “It’s okay Michael, sometimes stuff happens and I’m sure we can get through this together.”

Michael moved his hands from his face and glanced over at Lucy, exhaling sharply and standing up from the table. “I guess so, we just need to figure this out. Figure out how to live with a government organization on my land.” Michael glared at Lucifer and walked away, deeper into the house.

Lucifer gave a sad look at Michael as he walked away and just looked at the ground before standing up and looking out the window, watching the agents do whatever they were doing. She gave the dead dragon one more look, the reason why their lives were changing forever. It made her think a lot, was this the way their lives were going to be for the rest of them, or were this the start of a new adventure.
