Dark As Dusk
Prologue

Prologue

The darkness of a new day protruded into my room and as many around the continent I tried to fight it away.

-Great I have to wake up.

That feeling of pain as you get out of your bed and realize it’s not just a darkness of morning but a darkness of a scornful presence that forces your very mind Into a groveling state of disarray. Slowly I slid out of bed and over to the window picking up my sword, dagger, and robe as I rolled over to the front door still unwilling to truly get up out of my sheets.

-Oh great they have a peep hole.

Looking through the hole in the door I saw a man dressed in a royal uniform a huge bag with round bumps and a lot of official looking papers all banded together neatly with some coarse rope.

-I think I’m going to be late on taxes this year too heh.

Luckily the window I had jumped out of was only on the 4th floor so I only got a few light bruises as I rolled on the ground. Looking around I saw a few contorted looks on people’s faces as I had just fallen a distance that most would die from. That and also the fact that I was still in my striped flannel while carrying all my supplies my hands and sneaking away from the inn without paying charge.

One person dressed in what looked like aristocratic garb scribbled on with precious metals looked at me with eyes not of wonder, or shock, but of pure rage. I watched as this bear of a man stomped around spraying saliva like Mount Ephol. This man just wouldn’t stop flapping his gums at me and finally I heard the keystone of his speech. “Pay your rent or die by my hands.” He pulled out a rusty old looking bastard that looked as though it would be of better use as sand paper. A little sleepy I was late on the draw when I was pulling out my dagger and by the time I was done pulling it out he was already running at me, I panicked and threw it in his general direction it plunged into his skull. As luck would have it I missed and killed the very important looking tax collector as he left the inn. The big man with the sandpaper stopped and looked at the tax collector. The commotion, the crowd, the sudden scramble for safety and of course my tail between my legs as I ran into enchanted magical forest that always had rumors that ended with. “Enter and you’re screwed.”

I ran for my life neglecting any path or dirt road as it would pose the threat of capture if someone was as bold as I to run into the forest. As I ran I reminisced about my glory days that had pretty much ended the week before

-If I had only picked the right path in that cliché dungeon full of scurvy legged pickpockets.

Slowing down in the forest I decided it would be a better idea to change into my gear. Stopping I took off my shirt and pants and as I had done that and was completely defenseless I felt a grip around my neck and what felt like the sand off a beach slowly but surely sawed my brains. All I could think was “ouch” as I fainted from loss of air.

Waking up I saw a strange board of shining blue light.

-What the hell is going on where am I.

-Heck why not and read it.

[Choose your name.]

A stinging pain appeared along my torso wondering what I was supposed to do I finally just chose my favorite time of day.

“Dusk!”

As at the moment truly felt like I would rather be sleeping.

[Choose your race.]

Displayed on the board were different races including Elves, Beast-Men Orcs Dwarves Centaurs and a strange metallic humanoid. Sliding my finger across the board I looked past many more races but to my dismay there was no human race I could choose. Taking my chances I said. “Human.”

[Choose your gender.]

“Male.”

[Choose your appearance.]

On the board was displayed a picture of a very lively face at what I would perceive as me at my time of death. I had my slightly curled grey hair that was cut at different mismatched lengths. Looking down from my hair I saw a huge scar that was placed there by my murderer. I grimaced at the last word I ever thought of was “ouch”

“Erase all scars.” I watched as the huge scar disappeared and grimaced at the thought of it while looking into my own eyes and then checking my height. While many people would love to be taller I was the opposite I thought on the base that if I was slightly shorter then a lot of my enemies I could focus more on agility and make myself slightly buffer to counteract the loss of weight from the height on the terms of that “Four inches shorter, and make me a bit more buff.” I watched myself suddenly gain an inch of muscle.

[You are a Human, Male with this appearance is that okay?]

“Yes.”

[You are now done with character customization and will be transported into Dirt Village.]

I felt myself getting ripped apart. Looking down is saw a dark mist spiraling about my knees. Beyond the vortex of mist was darkness void of anything. Fed into the vortex’s maw I was gone within a matter of minutes as I felt the sorrows of a fly in a Venus -Flytrap.

I appeared on the ground of a nice warm room with a fireplace and a warm scent of bread baking in a distant oven. A grizzled hand on my scalp and a man and a woman who one could say had similar traits appearance-wise to me. The couple looked quite undisturbed by my peril and the man even yawned. I looked up to see my captor.  He was a man with a red beard leather farmers clothes and a presence that was not welcoming one bit.

[New skill Perception.]

Annoyed at this message board appearing in my face I tried to swat it away but only ended up agitating the man holding my head as the message board just slid around whenever I touched it. I felt as the grip tighter on my skull and the red beard began to speak his mind.

“Your son, he has done it again. Even after you told me you’d make sure another incident would never happen again. Tis weird never learning his lesson from stealing from the market and I think I here found my answer to my question, he needs a little lesson I’m telling you he’s a troublesome boy and you should punish him teach him some manners in the process. Heck it might even help you in the future.”

Silence followed as the couple started to somehow look even less interested then before.

“I’ll break his hands if you do nothing snap his fingers one by one,”

The man paused to see that the couple truly didn’t give a damn.

“I’ll make sure he can’t steal anything from my shop or anyone’s for that matter.”

The man started to jab his hand along my neck in a motion that would suggest that he would slit my throat. I smelled two very unpleasant smells first was dung and the second was death.

I looked at the couple who hadn’t said a word in my defense this entire time.

“Why the hell is your kid so shaky cant he tell I’m talking about him even more reason you should be sending him off to the army so he can earn some-“

The male of the couple hardened his gaze and the room filled with pressure all of which was directed at the grizzled man. The man let go of me and then gently as though he was trying to fight it but then rather quickly

”thump”

He fell to the ground and was still.

-note to self do not double-cross him

“Ummm should I dispose of him?”

The man who I decided to think of as father stayed silent and the mother just nodded. I looking at the red bearded man and checked for anything valuable on his lifeless corpse. While looking for loot I was also looking for any sign of what might have killed him. Unfortunately I was only disheartened by the fact that I couldn’t figure out what had killed him.

-Is it poison?

[New skill Identify.]

[Identification of cause of death failed.]

[-1 fame.]

“What!”

The mother gave me a glance that I’m guessing was to show her annoyance. I quickly picked up the body.

[New skill Strength.]

[New skill Endurance.]

[New skill Willpower.]

Dragging the body all the way to the back I checked around to see if anybody was looking in my general direction luckily it looked like my parents owned a large estate and so I didn’t have to worry about witnesses. I dragged the body to a river I found out in the back a good fifty meters from the house.  A river took the man over and I watched as the red beard took a swim in both the River Styx and the river out in the back.
