Bart desperately wanted to peek outside, to see what was making those sounds. But fear kept him rooted in place.
"What do I do?" he whispered frantically to Lian. "I'm not strong enough to fight anything. Hell, I barely understand my own abilities."
Lian's translucent form flickered anxiously. "Stay calm, Bart. We need to think this through."
The footsteps grew closer. Bart could hear sniffing sounds now, like some kind of animal trying to catch a scent.
"It's hunting," Lian said, his voice tense. "And we might be its prey."
In that moment, huddled in the dark as an unknown threat prowled outside, Bart had never felt more alone or out of his depth.
"I'm not ready for this," Bart thought, fighting back tears. "I don't want to die here, in this strange world, before I even understand what's happening to me."
But as the fear threatened to overwhelm him, another part of Bart's mind - the logical, problem-solving part - kicked in.
"Okay, think," he told himself. "I have abilities now. Maybe not strong ones yet, but it's better than nothing. What can I do?"
He considered his options. The Debug Reality skill might give him more information, but using it might also draw attention to himself somehow. And he had no idea how effective his rudimentary Script Initiation abilities would be.
The sounds outside grew louder. Whatever was out there, it was getting closer to their hiding spot.
"I have to try something," Bart said to Lian. "Even if it's futile, I can't just sit here and wait to be found."
Lian nodded, his eyes glowing with an eerie light. "Use Debug Reality. It might give us some insight into what we're dealing with."
Debug Reality!
Instantly, Bart’s perception shifted. Even through the cellar walls, he could see lines of code defining the world around him. And there, moving through the ruined village, was something that made his blood run cold.
It was a grotesque beast, with matted fur, sharp claws, and glowing red eyes. But more importantly, Bart could see its underlying code structure:
class ShadowBeast extends Predator {
int level = 15;
int health = 500;
int attack = 75;
int defense = 40;
String[] weaknesses = {"light", "purification"};
String[] strengths = {"darkness", "corruption"};
boolean nightVision = true;
boolean enhancedSmell = true;
void hunt() {
// Advanced tracking and pursuit logic
}
void shadowMerge() {
// Ability to blend with shadows
// Increases stealth by 80%
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
}
}
Bart's eyes widened as he processed the information. "Lian, are you seeing this?"
Lian nodded grimly. "A ShadowBeast. It's far stronger than we can handle right now. Its level and stats are well beyond your current capabilities."
Bart's mind raced, analyzing the information before him. "But look at its weaknesses - light and purification. And it's stronger in darkness."
He glanced around the dark cellar, his heart sinking. "Great. We're in the worst possible place to face this thing."
The ShadowBeast was right outside now. Bart could hear its heavy breathing, the scrape of its claws against the cellar doors.
"Wait a minute," Bart muttered, his eyes lighting up with realization. "If it's so strong in darkness, what if I could trick it into thinking there's light?"
Lian looked at him, surprised. "That's... actually a good idea. But how would you do that?"
"I've been manipulating code, right? What if I could create a simple command to simulate light?"
Lian nodded slowly. "It might work."
Excitement bubbled up in Bart, but it was quickly tempered by uncertainty. He turned to Lian, "But... I'm not sure how to actually do it. You have all this knowledge now. What kind of command should I use?”
"For something like this, we want to keep it simple," Lian explained. "Try visualizing a command structure like this: environment.simulateLight(intensity: high);"
Bart's brow furrowed in concentration. "Environment dot simulate light... intensity high," he repeated, committing the structure to memory.
environment.simulateLight(intensity: high);
For a moment, nothing happened. Then a soft glow began to emanate from his body.
Outside, the ShadowBeast let out a startled growl. Bart heard it back away from the cellar doors, its movements becoming erratic.
"It's working," Lian confirmed. "It’s actually driving it away!"
The creature snarled, clearly agitated. Bart heard its footsteps moving away, growing fainter until they faded entirely.
They waited for what felt like hours, barely breathing, before Lian finally spoke. "I think it's gone. You can relax now, Bart. That was... impressive."
The simulated light faded, leaving them once again in darkness.
"I can't believe that actually worked," Bart said, slumping against the wall in exhaustion. "Thanks for helping me make it happen.”
Lian's translucent form shimmered with what looked like pride. "You did most of the work. I just provided a little guidance." Then, his expression shifted, and his voice took on that deeper, resonant quality:
[Script Initiation Progress: 15%]
[New Ability Unlocked: Basic Environmental Manipulation]
[Basic Environmental Manipulation: This skill allows you to interact with and slightly alter your immediate surroundings using Code Essence. You can make minor changes to environmental factors like temperature, light, or sound within a small area.]
[To use this ability, visualize the change you want to make and input the following code: manipulateEnvironment(factor, intensity, radius);]
Bart's eyes widened. "Interesting. So that's how I managed to create that light earlier. I was unknowingly using this skill."
Lian nodded, his voice returning to normal. "Exactly. Your instincts led you to tap into this ability even before you fully understood it."
Bart considered the possibilities this new ability offered. While it might not be as immediately useful for combat as the physical enhancement, he could see how it could be incredibly versatile.
"I could potentially use this to hide, to distract enemies, or even to make myself more comfortable in harsh conditions," he realized aloud.
"Absolutely," Lian agreed. "The applications are limited only by your creativity. Why don't you try it out more consciously this time?"
Curious, Bart focused on the air around him. It was chilly in the cellar, and he'd been shivering slightly. He visualized warmth spreading through the area and mentally input the command:
manipulateEnvironment("temperature", "warm", 2);
Almost immediately, Bart felt the air around him start to warm up. It was subtle, not like stepping into a heated room, but more like sitting in a patch of sunlight. The chill that had been seeping into his bones began to recede.
"This is amazing," Bart breathed. "I'm literally manipulating reality with code."
Lian's form brightened with excitement. "Well done, Bart! You're getting the hang of this quickly. What else do you want to try?"
Bart thought for a moment. "Well, I've been worried about making too much noise and attracting attention. Maybe I could try to dampen the sounds around us?"
"Give it a shot."
Bart concentrated again, focusing on sound this time:
manipulateEnvironment("sound", "muffled", 3);
The effect was immediate. It was as if someone had draped a thick blanket over the cellar. The slight echoes of his breathing, the faint skittering of small creatures, all became muted and distant.
Bart couldn't help but grin. "This ability, while not flashy, could be incredibly useful. I could create distractions, mask my presence, or even potentially interfere with an enemy's senses."
Lian nodded approvingly. "Exactly. Sometimes the subtler abilities are the most powerful. But be careful—" His voice shifted to the system tone again:
[Warning: Continuous use of Environmental Manipulation drains refined Code Essence. Current capacity allows for limited duration of effects.]
Bart's smile faded slightly. "Right. I can feel that. I'll need to practice this, figure out the most efficient ways to use it, how long I can maintain different effects, what the limits are."
"That’s a good idea ," Lian agreed, his voice normal once more. "Remember, we're in this together. I'll help you train and improve as much as I can."
As the adrenaline wore off, the reality of his situation hit Bart anew. This world was far more dangerous than he had imagined. And he was woefully unprepared for it.
"I'm still in way over my head," Bart admitted to Lian. "But at least now I have some ways to start dealing with the challenges this world is throwing at me."
