Ferdinand, or 'Freddy' to his friends, had never been especially talented, despite what other people thought. But, he was lucky and knew how to take advantage of it.
Already at a young age, he had realized that 'luck' wasn't as simple as most people thought.
There was the 'visible luck', what everyone thought about when they heard the word. Things like winning in a coin toss or throwing just the right number with a dice.
Then, there was the 'invisible luck'. For example, overlooking a coin lying on the floor and just barely reaching your train in time. If you had seen it, you would have picked it up and missed your train as a result. Of course, this kind of luck was hard to confirm since it, as its name implied, was invisible.
He only theorized it after realizing that things rarely went wrong for him, even if he planned less than other people would.
The third one was his greatest strength, however. 'Luck of opportunity' was what he called it. Basically, stumbling into and accidentally groping a girl's chest, and then find the right way to act and thing to say that they will feel embarrassed and then misinterpret that embarrassment.
Okay, that last one was a bad example. He didn't do that on purpose, it just somehow happened every now and then. But still, someone else who ran into a girl like that might not be able to make the most out of the opportunity he was given and get just slapped instead.
Still, he always prided himself on the fact that he was good at seeing if an opportunity presented itself to him, and they did more regularly than for other people.
But really, he didn't do that on purpose, he wasn't a player after all and it always troubled him that he had to reject such nice girls. And even if they said they had no problem with being one of many, he didn't want to treat his girlfriend like that. And even ignoring all that, he knew that it just wasn't really a possibility in today's society, be it because of legal or societal issues.

It was during a pretty normal Friday afternoon, while he was at home reading his favorite web novel, that something happened he never expected to experience. By all rights, he had never heard about there ever being an earthquake in London before.
Panicked he looked around. But before he could think of anything, something else strange happened.
You have been chosen as participants for the 13th wave, please stay on standby.
A strange message appeared in front of his face. Several strange thoughts and possibilities passed through his mind at that moment. But his greatest worry was still to get to safety from the quake.
At that moment, he saw his expensive 1400 pound monitor, which he had won in a lottery, start shaking.
Without thinking about it, he ran forward to catch it and cried out: "Nononononono-"
'Mother Earth' has chosen you as her Hero.
Accept? (Y/N)
"-no! What?"
The message remained for a moment longer, just long enough for him to understand its meaning. How could that have happened to him? A system had just appeared out of nowhere and offered him to become a Hero, and he rejected on accident!
Indignant at his bad luck he screamed: "Aaaaahhhhh! N-"
Your answer wasn't clear. Please repeat.
Accept? (Y/N)
"-NOOO! Fuck! SHIT! WHY?! Why twice!?"
Angry at himself and his sudden bad luck, he remembered something. He wasn't sure where, but he had heard somewhere that, during an earthquake, you can take cover under a doorframe.
With no better option, he quickly ran towards his room's door. Just as he was about to each it, the shaking intensified. The door that had been opened before suddenly slammed closed racing right towards his face.
Freddy jumped reflexively and put his hands in front of him to catch the momentum of the door.
Before door and body could meet, everything went black.
