Chapter Two-Shattered Memories

Chapter Two-Shattered Memories

Sapphire sits alone in a small square room with two chairs and a small table in the center. She looks to her left and sees a large glass window hidden into the wall, a sleek grey steel lined door was to the left of the window. The overhead lights start to buzz as one of the bulbs were about to pop. The door slides open as Dr. Benjamin still in his chair rolls into the room followed by an officer and stop in front of the table. Sapphire looks to the female officer with a hateful look and sees her holding a rectangular data pad. Dr. Benjamin moves to the officers right. Sapphire looks back to Dr. Benjamin and sees a box of tools on his lap.

The Officer's grey uniform stood out as her jacket hangs open. Her short brown hair hangs down to her upper neck as her blue eyes shined. Her soft rounded face had some freckles along with her narrow nose. Dr. Benjamin rolls up and stops next to Sapphire, he opens the box and begins shuffling some tools. Ms. Sapphire, I will be doing some work on your arms and legs, Dr. Benjamin said. The Officer sits down at the other end of the table and looks at her pad. I am your psych officer, Alexandra, she said with a calm voice.

What is the point of this, Sapphire asked? We need to know if you are the same person when you died, Alexandra said with a calm tone. Alexandra reaches down with her left hand and taps the data pad a few times. We also need to see if your memories are in tacked, Alexandra said. And verify your combat skills have not decayed, Dr. Benjamin said with a worried tone. Sapphire shoots her head towards Dr. Benjamin causing him to flinch and roll back. Even if your personality has changed slightly, the project will be classified as a failure, Dr. Benjamin states.

Alexandra looks up from her pad and sees Sapphire locking her eyes with her. I know General Anderson said he knows it is you, but we must do this test, Alexandra said as she slightly leans back expecting a swing.

Sapphire Anderson, is that correct, Alexandra asked? That is correct, Sapphire responded. Do you remember your maiden name, Alexandra asked? I do not have a maiden name, Sapphire responds. Looking confused she looks back to her pad and began to scroll for information. Dr. Benjamin rolls forward and leans forward. Do you remember your parents at all, Alexandra asked? Sparks began to jump from Sapphire’s left arm.

What parents, both died from overdoses when I was only an infant, Sapphire said? I have a file on your upbringing, but can you remember and tell me yourself, Alexandra asked? Sapphire scoffs and moves her right arm brings it down on the table and causes it to fold up and crashes to the ground. Why would I want to talk about that, Sapphire said with a firm tone? I have my orders, Alexandra said as she shakes in place as Sapphire tilts her head slightly to the left as she shoots a look of anger. Flinching from the look, she drops the pad and bends down and picks it up.

Why did you assholes even bring me back?, Sapphire asked. Cyber resurrection program to bring fallen soldiers back to service, the program was thought up by Dr. Benjamin, Alexandra said in a shaky tone. Sapphire looks back to Dr. Benjamin and gives him a harsh look. Dr. Benjamin rolls up to her left legging and flips open a hatch on her leg, he reaches in and begins to work. Sapphire seeing pistons and circuits within the compartment. I am going to break your arms slowly, Sapphire said with venom in her voice.

Sapphire focus on her questions, General Anderson said through a speaker. Raising her right hand and flips her middle finger towards the window, fucking die, Sapphire said to the speaker as her eyes turn red. Real mature, General Anderson said.

Turning her head, Sapphire sharply looks at the window. I will be right back, Sapphire said as she stands up and kicks Dr. Benjamin to the side and walks towards the window with a heavy step. Reaching the window, she comes to a stop and investigates as her vision switches through. Raising her right arm and thrusts it forward and smashes into the window and grabs something. She pulls her arm back violently, she rips General Anderson through the window and slams him into the floor in front of her. Sapphire looking directly into his eyes and bares her fangs. Releasing her grips, she slams her right fist into the floor next to his head.

General Anderson hardly notices the strike as he keeps his eyes locked with her. Sapphire stands up and walks back to her seat with a heavy step. Alexandra looks completely horrified as she sees the General on the floor. Sapphire sits down as Dr. Benjamin continues to work on her leg. The asshole had it coming, Sapphire said.

What did General Anderson do to deserve that? Alexandra asked. I tried to break up their relationship, another general tried to marry his daughter to my son, General Anderson said. Even now I regret what I had done, General Anderson said. Alexandra slowly turns back to Sapphire as General Anderson picks himself up and walks to the door with a heavy limp. The door opens as he approaches as General Anderson leaves the room.

So, your childhood, where were you born? Alexandra asked with a frightened tone. Level 147, of the southern district, fallen reds territory, Sapphire said. Is that a gang? Alexandra asked. Sapphire lowers her head and looks away towards the door. More like an organized crime element of the district, Sapphire said. Hang on, let me check our records, Alexandra states. The officer began to search through her pad and finds the information and gasps.

Drugs, whore rings, and slavery, Alexandra said in a worried tone. They would get drunk and fire randomly in the streets, I remember laying on the floor all night as bullets went over my head, Sapphire said. Alexandra looks completely pale as she processes the information. That is not even scratching the surface of fallen red’s activities or leader, Sapphire said.

From our records, you were on level fifty in the northern district, and you lived in that district, Alexandra said. I lied when I filled out this information; I am from the southern district, Sapphire said. Alexandra shaking as she taps on the pad. Ok, then, let us look at something else from your file, Alexandra said. Form some medical history; it looks like you were on the run before, Alexandra said. And suffered from malnutrition, and injuries from blunt force and slashing weapons, Alexandra said. I was after I escaped, Sapphire said. I did not even mention I was shot in the side, before I was found, Sapphire said.

Wait, that is not in the records! Alexandra said. Sapphire looks back to the officer with a stern look. James found me behind some boxes with blood all around me, Sapphire said. The only person I told was James, and he will always be the one, Sapphire said.

The door slides open as General Anderson steps through and stops in front of the door. Sir, what can I do for you? Alexandra asked. General Anderson looks to Sapphire and looks to Alexandra. I will handle it from here, as there was information James told me years ago, General Anderson said. Sapphire shoots her head back and growls and shoots daggers with her eyes.

Alexandra gets up and leaves the room, a light click rings out as the pad hits the floor. You too Dr, General Anderson said. Lies, Sapphire said in a harsh tone. Ok, I have finished her left arm and leg adjustments, Dr. Benjamin said. Slowly looking up as he packs away his tools and turns his chair and he heads to the door.

General Anderson moving around the destroyed table and takes a seat across from Sapphire. Tell me about your sister, Ruby, General Anderson asked. Sapphire’s eyebrows shoot up with frustration on her face. Why would I tell you about that whore? Sapphire said. Because I know you told James in complete trust, please help honor his memory by telling me, General Anderson said with a calm tone.

Sapphire turns and looks back to General Anderson as she raises her left hand and places it on her face. The cold steel seeping into her skin as she remembers every detail. I cannot believe he told you about this event from my past, Sapphire said.

Sapphire, James wanted me to look after you if anything happened to him, General Anderson said. James what? Sapphire said. General Anderson nods his not in approval. Moving his right hand into his jacket and pulls out a pad and touches it with his thumb. He did, General Anderson said. Sapphire, if you are hearing this, then I died, possibly saving you from something or your past coming back to haunt us, James's voice said. Sapphire’s lips began to tremble as James's voice calms her and relaxes her shoulders. I know you hate my father with a passion, ever since the brawl at our wedding, James pauses. We mended our relationship after that incident, James finished up. I have told my father a few things to help gain your trust, but the first thing I did tell him was about your sister Ruby, James's voice said. Sapphire hunches forward and quickly cover her face with her hands. You, damn loyal asshole, Sapphire quietly said. The others will come in time, but remember I will always love you, my precious jewel, James's voice cuts out. A tear began to run down General Anderson’s face as Sapphire tries to cry.

Sapphire, please tell me about your sister Ruby and what happened to her, General Anderson said. Sapphire removes her hands and plants them on her lap as her throat tightens. When I was five, my older sister got into serious debt with a local enforcer of the Fallen Red’s after my parents died. One day, he came to collect the debt, but Ruby had no money to pay him. He insisted on collecting by any means, so she sold me instead. He took me to the leader of the Fallen reds, and she looks me over with hunger in her eyes. Shortly after I was six she raped and beat me. She even raped me in front of her goons then let them have a turn. General Anderson looks shocked and horrified as he processes this information. Years passed as aged into a young teen; I was forced to work in one of her whore rings.

I got lucky and was made into a maid and cleaned up after the acts with a broken smile on my face. I remember the drugs they forced everyone to take, the males were given a compound that made them follow commands without question. The females where given aphrodisiacs, many died from heart attacks. Their broken faces still haunt me in my dreams, Sapphire said. After one night, as one of her goons was leaving, he forgot his gun and quickly took it. I waited a week then eventually escaped and killed a few of the goons in my way. The rush was thrilling as they died, Sapphire said with shame in her voice. I did run into her on the street and shot her and her group dead without hesitation. A few returned fires, I cut them down in a shaky fire. After seeing her gasping for breath, I walked over and saw a simple knife next to her. Picking up the knife, I stabbed into her fat belly and cut my way up as I laughed. Pulling the blade free, I watched as her guts spilled out onto the ground. My eyes widened as I spotted a small fetus dropping out. Dropping the knife, I stood there in shock at what I had done. Looking down in shame as she covers her face with her hands. I killed an innocent child, Sapphire said in a broken tone. Leaving the area, my hands shook for weeks as I began to drink heavily from stolen booze.

General Anderson looking completely shocked at hearing this. After a few months, I found my older sister Ruby. She had become a popular prostitute in eastern district Level 80. Coming to her building I saw her walk into her apartment with some random guy. Taking a swig stolen booze, I pulled my gun and waited fifteen minutes. Knocking her door down and saw her fucking the guy. I shot him dead without hesitation, she tried to run for a door on the right as I shot her in both legs. Hitting the floor, her eyes were bleeding fear as she tried drag herself away. Going to the door, I kicked her in the face as I opened it. I found her children in their bedroom a boy and girl, huddled in fear as they saw me and Ruby on the ground. I dragged them out and made them watch as I started to kill Ruby slowly. I made it last hours as I cut off her fingers and toes, slashes her muscles and tendons, slammed her face into and open fire. She begged and asked who I was, Sapphire said. Do you not remember your little sister you sold into slavery? I said as I executed her with a gunshot to the side of her head.

Her kids were crying over her body as I left and took all the chips I could find and ran for it. I spent the next few years on the run and found my way to the northern district. Starving and looking weak, an old goon recognized me. Pulling his gun, he shot me in the side and leaving me bleed to death on the ground. Walking over he raised his right foot and brought it down on my chest breaking my ribs. He walked away laughing, as I lay there unable to move. Focusing, I found what strength I could and began to crawl. I crawled as far as I could before the shivers stopped me. I was almost a goner when James found me as I passed out from blood loss.

Her eyes turn to a deep blue as she takes a deep breath, after that I remember waking up in his bed, bandages around my wounds and fresh food on the nightstand. General Anderson swiftly stands up and steps over the table and hugs her. He always did want to help other just like his mother, General Anderson said as his voice trembling.

Her eyes turn to a deep red as she feel the hug. Get off me, Sapphire said. Sapphire pushes General Anderson off and hears him crash to the ground. Standing up, Sapphire catches her chair with her right foot and kicks it towards the wall. The chair shattering as it collides with the wall with a loud crack. The only one who gets to touch me or even hold me is James, get that through your head, Sapphire said.

General Anderson began to laugh hard. Sapphire slowly raises her head and looks at him sternly. What the hell is so funny, asshole?, Sapphire asked. Just this is how you treated James for the first year he let you stay with him, General Anderson said. Sapphire comes to a stop and remembers the punches, kicks, and bites, but James just kept helping her. The deep scar along his left hand, so deep he needed stitches. Remembering the bite on his right hand near the thumb. He always called it a love bite, Sapphire said out loud with a weak tone. Sapphire began to shiver, as pressure built in her eyes. How horrible I treated James when we meet, and still, he just forgave me. He gave me an education, a place to live, food I never tasted before, even a real understanding of what love is, I will always be grateful, Sapphire thought to herself. That will be all for today; I have your quarters ready, General Anderson said weakly.

What? Why? Sapphire asked? I am fulfilling my son's wish; I will make sure you are taken care of, General Anderson said. He had a secret account set up with funds for you, General Anderson said. Sapphire stands up and walks towards the door and coming complete stop. How much is in the account, Sapphire asked? 35,000 chips, it is enough for you to live on until you die, James funneled his soldiers pay, and his pension for you, General Anderson said.

If you find the ones who killed James and me, I want to take them down, Sapphire said. General Anderson rolls over and pushes himself up and stand on his two feet. I have teams already searching for them, plus I know it is genuinely you. Hence, the resurrection was a complete success, General Anderson said. Hunching forward, he begins to limp forward as he wraps his left arm across his chest.

Sapphire steps forward as the door opens and steps through and seeing Dr. Benjamin and Alexandra crying. Troopers waiting outside the room, please escort Sapphire to her quarters, General Anderson said. The door to the small room opens in the back-left corner opens as two troops steps through and salute Sapphire. Sapphire salutes the soldiers and starts to walk forward and slips past the soldiers and out the door. The soldiers turn and follow behind Sapphire as the soldier on the left reaches down for her weapon. Sapphire looking up and catching a look from a mirror and takes a few seconds and recognizes the soldier. I am not going to shoot you the leg again, Sapphire said. I do not plan on letting it happen again, the soldier said. You also knocked out my little sister last time, the soldier said with a firm tone.

The soldier on the right quickly gets ahead of Sapphire and start to walk through the corridors. Sapphire traveling through several junctions and up a few levels and reach the quarters. They move through and come to a stop in front of H-14; the on the right soldier reaches out and takes the wheel on the door and turns it to the left and pulls it open. Quarters H-14 will be yours for the near future, the soldier said.

Sapphire steps forward into the quarters and looks around the room. A small rectangular window sits on the far side of the room and lets the rays of sunshine down onto a bed. A nightstand sits to the right of the bed with a frame laying down. A small sink and mirror sit to the right of the bed and reflects some of the sun's light. Looking over to the right, Sapphire sees a rectangular screen with three buttons.

Sapphire steps forward as the door to the quarters closes behind her and moves to the nightstand. Coming to a stop, she extends out her right hand and picks the glass frame up and looks at the photo within. Her lips began to tremble as she sees herself and James on their wedding day. Sapphire was holding blue flowers as her white dress sways in the wind.

James green uniform stood out with his sharp diamond face and brown eyes. His heavy muscular body presses against his uniform as he holds her close as the top of her head reaches his shoulder. Sapphire looking deeply at the photo as she moves her left hand over and runs it over James's face. Blood stains could be seen on her white gloves. The bitch could hardly put up a fight, Sapphire thought as she snickered. Sapphire remembers how James tapped her shoulder twice and took the flowers and ring from her finger. A light clink rings out as Sapphire moves her head away from the photo and looks down.

A ring lays on the floor with a heavy sapphire jewel in the center of the ring. It cannot be, I thought they took it, Sapphire thought to herself. Sapphire sets the photo back down and reaches out and takes the ring in her right hand. Sapphire looks at the ring and sees some scratches and clenches her hand around it. James, this ring you gave me, Sapphire said out loud.

Her lips tremble again as she opens her hands and remembers when James gave it to her as he eyes turn blue. The sun setting along the edge of the arboretum, the tall grass and flowers swaying in the wind. Coming to a clearing, he grabs my hand and I clock him in the chest. Looking down I saw he slipped this ring, I rushed forward and yelled yes.

After a few minutes, her eye shift back to red. Sapphire sets the ring next to the photo and takes the photo and throws it against the wall and shatters it. I will never forgive you for leaving me here alone, Sapphire said in a hollow voice. Looking away from the pile, Sapphire sees something hanging out of the mirror and walks over to it.

Seeing a tag as she reaches out with her left hand and pulls the tag and opens the mirror. Sapphire sees a grey dye kit with two black latches resting the cabinet behind the mirror. Reaching in, she takes the kit and looks it over and pops the latches an opens the lid. A vile of reddish blond paste lays in the bag next to scissors. Reddish blond color, but should I go back to a color that only reminds me of what I lost, Sapphire thought to herself?

Sapphire reaches down and takes the scissors with her right hand and starts cutting her hair with haste. Snow white hair falls into the sink as Sapphire moves her left hand and lets the water run. Looking down, she sees the hair wash down the drain. Sapphire sets the scissors down as she reaches over and takes the paste in her left hand and opens the top. Moving her fingers in, Sapphire removes a finger full and rubs it through her hair and sets the paste back and closes the kit.

Sapphire reaches up and closes the mirror and sees her short hair turning back to its original color. Looking at her shorten hair, old and new, which side do I fight for, Sapphire said. Only pain on both sides, but without him I will be lost forever, Sapphire said out loud. With all I had done, murdering my sister, massacring that baby, how can I ever find redemption,? Sapphire said as her voice trembling.

Looking back to the nightstand, Sapphire moves away from the mirror and looks back to the ring. Reaching the nightstand and reaches down and takes the ring into her hand and holds it tight. I will bring them to justice, or a bloody pulp on the ground, Sapphire said.
