Curse Of the Houm
Reminiscence

Reminiscence

"The world before the one you know was divided into 6 blocks called continents." said a blonde woman in her late twenties.

She radiated a cheerful demeanor, and her blue eyes behind her glasses added to her charm. She wore a sky-blue shirt and a long black skirt.

"At the beginning of the 20th century, a scientist named Alfred Lothar Wegener theorized that the world was one single block and that this block had split into 6." she added.

She was in a rather large classroom with an area of nearly 80 square meters.

The students were positioned to fill the entire room, with enough space for each of them. In front of them, there was a blackboard and the teacher's desk, which was slightly elevated.

In this room, there were about twenty students, each of whom was probably no older than 14. The boys all wore black pants and white shirts. Some had ties, and others had bowties.

As for the girls, instead of pants, they wore skirts that had to be long enough to cover their knees. They, too, could choose between bowties and neckties.

The teacher continued her lesson by saying:

"However, he died without his theory being accepted... even though it was true, poor man." Her voice was filled with compassion in the last words of that sentence.

Among the students, each had their own small discussion after the teacher's revelation.

"Did you hear that? There were 6 blocks, 6 continents. I wonder what all that looked like." one of the students said.

"I imagine each block wanted to be the strongest." his friend replied with much less enthusiasm.

However, no one had time to delve into it too deeply because the teacher had not finished her lesson yet.

"40 years later, his theory was proven! And many centuries later, here we are in a world with one single continent... Lynon." the teacher told her class before adding.

"The formation of Lynon marked a new beginning for humanity, the world reduced to 4 billion inhabitants. We are now in the year 1601 of the Houmag era."

The year 1600 of a new era, one could interpret that as meaning the world has been living 17 centuries after the convergence of continents. Many things must have changed during that time; the convergence must have had consequences, advantages.

Another day, the same school...

A man in his early forties stood in front of a slightly more mature audience. He wore a T-shirt and jeans, as if he wanted to appear a bit younger. He was neither handsome nor its opposite, and he had black hair and eyes of the same color.

The classroom was about 100 square meters in size, with roughly the same number of students as in the previous classroom.

There were two rows, each containing 10 students. The rows were separated by an aisle to allow the teacher to move around or for students to get to their seats.

To the right of the teacher, there were glass windows to ventilate the room, to his left was the entrance door, and right in front of the door was his desk.

"In the 21st century, talking about magic, power, mystical gifts, or anything of the sort was nothing but myth, pure cinema." the man in front of the room said.

"During the last century of the past world, everything was pure science. There was the supernatural, like voodoo, for example, but that was it." he added.

In his way of speaking, one could sense that he was a bit confused. It wasn't as if this was his first time teaching this class, but he felt the same way every time.

'A purely scientific world, huh?' he thought, smiling to himself.

When you're born with something, it's hard to imagine living without it. You wonder how people lived without it, what they had in its place. You think it must have been very boring, but the truth is that if you talk to someone from that time, they'll probably tell you things that will leave you breathless.

It's all a matter of making with what you have. No matter how hard you try to convince yourself, if a person doesn't know anything better than what they have, they won't want anything more than what they have.

The telephone, the internet, or any other creation of humanity arose out of the need of an individual or a group of people. By adapting, by becoming addicted, people forget that they once lived without it... such is humanity.

'They must have liked it that way.' the teacher added in his mind, before continuing his lecture.

"Today, Lynon has seen the birth of creatures you all know, the HOUMs. These creatures whose sole purpose is to kill, creatures upon which our ancestors' weapons had no effect."

He looked much more serious as he said this.

"These creatures are partly responsible for the drastic reduction in the Earth's population."

He then added with more emphasis in his voice:

"Maybe it was to maintain the Earth's balance, maybe it was the consequence of the world returning to one single block, maybe it was despair...

"Nevertheless, individuals with superhuman abilities were born, individuals using the same weapons as our ancestors to fight these monsters, but this time, these weapons had an effect. The HOUMs were slaughtered, and these people are part of the upper class.

"They are our guardians, our saviors; the organization containing these heroes is known as..."

He paused for a moment, his gaze fixed on his class. The students seemed to know the answer but didn't want to say the name. They were all familiar with the organization, but to pay homage to it, they chose to let the teacher make the name resonate within classroom.

And it was when the teacher had their full attention, when silence was at its peak, when you could hear the slightest sound, that he added.

"CREDHOS." There was a silent melody, and everyone imagined their favorite hero at that moment, everyone had the face of a super-strong individual, a reassuring face, the face of a CREDHOS.

Now...

‘So, the 21st century was the last one?’ thought a young man alone on his bed.

‘I would have liked to see what that century was like.’

‘And then... why am I thinking about all this? These are elementary school lessons.’

The young man added with a thoughtful expression, but all you could see were his eyes, all white with purple pupils. He had African-style braided hair on his forehead.

"Sigh."

‘I feel like this is the beginning of something right now.’

After a few seconds of pure silence in his mind, he added.

‘The beginning of a long and exciting story...’

This time, his eyes went from 'thoughtful' to 'determined' only even he didn't of that change.
