Chapter 3

"You're... Rosie?" an infirmary nurse gasped in shock as she re-examined the young girl before him. She looked nothing like the girl the nurses remembered from just a few days ago. Her tanned face had turned as white as snow and her previous calloused hands began thin and dainty. She no longer exuded the bearing of a rough commoner, but that of a young woman from high birth. The only thing that broke the illusion of her birth was the clear signs of dirt slightly smeared on her face. "What happened?" the nurse asked as she continued to marvel at Rosie's skin in awe.

Rosie hesitated before speaking, "I don't know, Ms. Dove. It all feels like a terrible dream now... but the pain..." Rosie shivered inside as she remembered the searing pain of her flesh being torn open.

Noticing Rosie's discomfort, nurse Dove backed off. "Sorry, I didn't mean to ask something uncomfortable. If you don't want to say, then don't. I don't want to force you to do anything you don't want to."

Rosie nodded. But then, an awkward silence fell upon the two of them. Nurse Dove was the one to break the silence. "Do you want me to make a thorough checkup?"

Rosie nodded in confirmation. nurse Dove gestured for Rosie to move to the small crystal ball. Rosie placed her hand on the crystal ball, and then nurse Dove started chanting. After a few more seconds, the chant was finished, and nurse Dove blankly stared into what seemed to be empty space. After another few seconds, nurse Dove's expression turned odd.

Seeing this, Rosie asked anxiously, "What is it? Is something wrong? Am I turning into a vampire?"

"I don't know," nurse Dove answered. "It's just it looks like your [Constitution] significantly increased since the last time you came."

"Oh..." Rosie said, checking her status. After closely examining, she jumped with shock. Her [Strength] and [Constitution] had significantly risen from what she remembered her stats were before.

"By the way, did you return with Mr. Gradra?" nurse Dove asked with a bit of hesitation in her voice.

Rosie looked surprised by the question and asked, "Did they not return yet? When I woke up, they were gone, and I was alone in the dungeon. The only thing keeping me company was a tamed slime."

"You woke up alone in the dungeon?" nurse Dove asked rhetorically. Her previously smiling face turned into a frown, then turned into an odd smile, her eyes gazing pitying towards Rosie.

"Is something wrong?" Rosie asked, seeing the unease in nurse Dove's face.

"Rosie..." nurse Dove hesitated to finish the sentence but ultimately relented. "Rosie... what happens when you die in a Dungeon? Mr. Gradra and the class you went with... they are probably dead."

Shock filled Rosie's face when she realized nurse Dove's words were true. She had forgotten. Rather, it was more like she chose not to remember that fact, as she tried to cling onto the last strand of hope that Mr. Gradra was still alive.

Rosie stumbled backward and fell onto the infirmary bed behind her. Tears started to fall as she buried her face into the pillow. A few of the other students in the infirmary glanced towards Rosie but later paid no mind to her. They didn't recognize the girl.

"Rosie... I'm going to talk to the headmaster about this. You guys have been missing for so long, we thought you all were dead already. I'm really thankful that you were able to return," nurse Dove comforted her, before slowly exiting the infirmary.

A few minutes later, nurse Dove returned with the headmaster. They waited a few more minutes for Rosie's emotions to calm down. The majority of the students in the infirmary and even some of the other nurses began to notice the faintly recognizable girl before them and secretly started to listen in on their conversation. The headmaster closed the curtains around them then, began asking a few questions.

"Hello Rosie, it's great to see you're alive and well. I don't know how it must feel to be the only one to return, but to be honest, that is the reality of Dungeon exploring. Death lays at every corner, and that is why we have Adventurer schools, to make sure you can survive," the headmaster said.

Rosie nodded, her eyes still red from crying.

"What happened? Say as much as you can, I wouldn't force you. I just want to get the specific details of what occurred so I can explain to their families," the headmaster softly spoke.

Rosie nodded in agreement and began to narrate the events that she remembered, sniffles constantly interrupting her speech. She quickly explained how they faced a boss the moment they entered the Dungeon. She briefly passed over how she couldn't handle the low-level skeleton too embarrassed and fearful to fully explain. Then, she talked when she first awoke, and then the next time she awoke, finding herself fully healed of almost everything, including her previous scars. And then she talked about the slime, to which she seemed to have formed some sort of mystical connection.

"Can I see the slime?" the headmaster asked.

Rosie nodded and opened the backpack, taking out the slime. The slime laid peacefully on her hands, as if it were sleeping. It was nothing like those restless slimes from Dungeons that were constantly on the move.

The headmaster looked on in awe and went to poke it with his finger. The slime didn't react at all and continued to sit in Rosie's hands like an obedient pet.

"Is it dead?" nurse Dove couldn't help but call out. However, the slime seemed to have heard this and reacted by trembling slightly, as if to shake its body from side to side.

"I guess not," the headmaster said with a light chuckle. "This slime seems to be a little weird though, tamed slimes are never obedient because they can never understand any orders. But since you said you felt a sense of connection, maybe the person who saved you cast some sort of bonding spell. And with the mysterious medicine that turned your skin so fair... I have no doubt the person that saved you is very strong, maybe even breaking the infamous level 100 barrier. I will take my leave then. Since I finally know the situation, I have to go file the report and paperwork."

The headmaster then turned to leave. The students and other nurses who had been secretly trying to eavesdrop on the conversation quickly turned their heads away.

"Rosie, just stay here for now. I'm sure you have a lot of things on your mind," nurse Dove said. "Call me if you need anything."

Rosie nodded and laid down on the infirmary bed. Although it was hard and uncomfortable, it was enough for Rosie, especially after having been sleeping on a hard rock surface for the past who knows how long. Before long, all the stress turned to exhaustion and she fell asleep, lightly holding the slime to her chest.

----------------------------------------

The slime being held in Rosie's chest was extremely vexed. After bandaging the girl's wounds, his soul was severely overstrained, and he took the time to rest. When the girl woke for the first time and grimaced with her expressions of pain, Lang Jintao realized that he still hadn't actually healed the girl yet, and she could still die from infections and other complications.

Thus, he quickly turned his attention away from resting his soul to gathering some spiritual qi to heal the girl's wounds. With his rather strong soul, he quickly gathered enough spiritual qi to heal the mortal's wounds, and even to advance their girl's bodily constitution and strength, healing her past scars, and skin, which caused the lightening of her skin and disappearance of her many callouses.

After healing her, Lang Jintao began probing the girl's soul, seeing if there was any damage there as well. But the moment he entered her soul-space, the divine qi hidden in his soul seemed to react violently. It began to forcefully suppress Lang Jintao's soul to force it into a beast contract with the young girl's soul.

And thus, a long and arduous battle began, between two tiny but powerful strands of divine qi, and the failed Ascendant, Lang Jintao. It would have been no problem if his soul were completely recovered to his former glory, but with the endless erosion from the void, it would take a long time to recover. In addition, he had just over-exerted his already weakened soul to forcefully take control of the undead.

Even so, it was clear just how resilient Lang Jintao's soul was. His surviving in the void was not just due to dumb luck.

After who knows how long, Lang Jintao split a tiny part of his soul off and escaped from the divine qi's restrictions. The strands of divine qi seemed to have been satisfied and returned to being dormant, no longer paying any attention to Lang Jintao's true soul. Now, the tiny consciousless piece of his soul was under the effects of a beast contract and was swiftly returned to Lang Jintao's slime body. Now, the two divine qi's also seemed to have a faint connection between themselves. The slime's core seemed to briefly shine, but it went unnoticed because it was covered by Rosie's hands and bosom.

With a heavy heart, Lang Jintao exited the girl's soul space, chasing after his broken piece of soul and easily restricting it with his divine sense. For the time being, he himself hadn't actually been forced into the beast contract with the girl, but there was now a faint connection between the hidden divine qi in his soul and the one in the girl's soul.

Having returned to his body, Lang Jintao began to examine the divine qi hidden in his soul with extreme alertness. The trace of divine qi now appeared as it had in the beginning, almost completely obscure to any normal soul, and providing information to and from the world. However, there was now an extra connection, which provided information to and from him and the girl.

After carefully examining the strange trace of divine qi, Lang Jintao grit his non-existent teeth and activated the interface to see the parts of the information that he had access to.

From the world came the same information as last time, except he had a new title, [Tamed Monster]. Lang Jintao figuratively looked at the title with an unsightly expression, but when he carefully examined his soul again, he found there was nothing wrong besides the faint trace of divine qi. But the information still made him extremely uneasy. Who knew when the divine qi inside his soul would suddenly turn ferocious like it did when he entered the girl's soul-space.

The information from the connection to the girl was about what he expected. It was information about this girl, who was named Rosie. Her stats seemed to be rather high compared to what I currently had, which wasn't that surprising. This body seemed to be extremely weak compared to normal mortals.

He extended his part of his divine sense and found himself being held tightly by the young girl. She was sleeping peacefully on a bed in the middle of a large infirmary. Most of the patients were strangely very young.

After pondering for a while, Lang Jintao continued to examine his surroundings and began to learn the language of this world. At the same time, he began to walk the path of cultivation again, ignoring his injured soul to cultivate spiritual qi. It would be much easier to resist attacks if he had spiritual qi.
