'Where am I?!'
Standing in the middle of a blank space, where no boundaries can be seen, a blank canvas in a humanoid shape frantically tried to piece together his last few memories. Well, not that Alex noticed that those were his last few memories.
'This isn't right! I remember being right outside my house feeling the sun and... Trying to pick up the box... Fuck! Where are my cigarets, I need to buy more now! Huh... Where are my pants? And legs...? ... ... FUUU-'
As if something just clicked, the painful memories that his subconscious was trying really hard to forget came back: the pain of being crushed and the crushing reality that he WANTED to live and not being able to. It all came back at once, and, for God knows how long, Alex laid in the 'floor' of this white open space holding his chest and hyperventilating.
It took him a while, but when he noticed he was already laying in a soft couch with little angels stamped on the cover of the side pillows. Nothing impressive, but one could see that sheer devotion was put into hand making those.
Getting his back upright on the couch and looking around Alex found a bright light right near him. It didn't blind him at first, but when he looked at it he couldn't see anything, not even the sofa could be noticed clearly around that light.
"Oh, sorry about the light. It's the usual 'Can't show my face' clothing that I'm used to showing around when I need to. Done, you can now look at me"
The light faded, and when Alex did look, removing his hand that had reflexively gone up shielding his eyes, he had a surprised expression on his face. One which he didn't know he could make.
"Morgan Freeman?!?!"
"HAHAHAHA is that how you see me? Well, that is not the first time, but your reaction was pretty good, almost as good as when someone saw me as Gandalf. That one was pretty funny, I must say."
And again, for the second time in a short span, or so Alex believed, something clicked. "So you are saying... I'm seeing you like that because... If I'm guessing correctly..."
"Yes, I am God, capital 'G' and everything. It is with great sorrow that I must say, Alex... I've known of your premature death since the beginning and, even though you might not believe it very much in the whole see-it-all thing, and I know for a fact you do know I see it all, but I've been watching you and every other soul in this realm"
'Well... Now I feel like shit... I have been avoiding going to church, but I was going to go back eventually... My def...'
"Now Alex, 'defect' is not a proper way to talk about your condition."
This surprised the soul for a brief moment before he came to a quick realization that God was all-knowing as well. 'So he knows my thoughts... Kinda creepy, but that pretty much confirms it then'

God continued, "You had a lack of... How should I put it... 'Umph' that everyone else has. You see, your lack of drive and motivation is not something unique to you. It's not a defect either, but I know how you feel about yourself. It is not necessary to go to church to believe in me..."
And then God trailed off talking to himself for a few moments "Well, I don't know if I should say Me or me... A capital 'M' doesn't sound right..."
"As I was saying." He looked back at Alex in the eyes.
'The whole Morgan Freeman package, even the white suit, white hairs and wrinkles around the eyes... I must have watched Bruce Almighty a couple of times, but the thing stuck to me huh...'
"Even though you have been mistreating your body with that foul substance that a good half of the world is addicted to... You just wanted a respite from that something you lack.
You can go to heaven if it is your wish, or I can arrange for you to be sent to another realm and try to live a new life"
"Wait!" Alex said, alarmed and pretty confused with the situation. Morgan Freeman voice and way of speaking not allowing him to interrupt before because of how weird it made him feel.
"I thought... If I remember correctly... You don't reincarnate people, or at least not that I can recall in any way, shape or form..."
"That is correct. Hm, how should I put it... Your situation, and everyone else in the same predicament, actually have been bothering my idea of 'resolution'? Yeah, that sounds about right.
I don't reincarnate souls. I am the God of this realm, but on other realms, or as you might know them for 'Alternate Dimensions' there are in fact Gods, still capital 'G'... Sometimes with capital 'G' that do reincarnation."
"So..." Alex said "I'm like a defective toy and I'm being returned to be sent to the factory for repurposing? Something like that?"
"Well... Your tendency to self-depreciate is something else boy.
No, you are being given a choice to start anew on another realm or to go to heaven. Some people just want to live as they were 'supposed' to. They want to have a life where they actually care to do things, and I, as a loving father, am willing to arrange a place for them to do so."
"Hm, sorry... Dad? You sounded just like my mom and dad put together. You know them, I know, but my mom is always arguing back and my dad is always... Well, my dad is a preacher and you know how that goes...
Yeah, it makes sense. I would love to go to heaven, but I still want to try to fix myself before that. So, I accept going to another world, but can I still go to heaven in this world, if that even how it works, when I die in the other realm?"
That question got God, THE GOD, by surprise. He might be all-knowing and all-seeing, but when dealing with other realms, even conversations become blurry. So he didn't expect this question.
God himself had this conversation multiple times, with many different people, some who didn't believe in him, some who did, but none of them, when allowed to go to another realm, actually cared to ask if it was possible to go to heaven in THIS realm. They either took it for granted, didn't care about it or took the option to go to the skies above right away.
Clearing his throat and siping in a cup of water, that Alex wasn't quite sure was there a few seconds ago or if he just missed it, God looked at him.
"For that question Alex..." and suddenly a smile "I will tell you, yes. It is possible, and I will arrange it so. Just don't twist your morality and you should be fine. Also, as a gift, I will talk to the Gods... or gods... Hm, it's always difficult when dealing with the other realm and their diversity issues.
I will give a good word about you so that they treat you right. You could even end up choosing how you look and matters like that. I don't know how their reincarnation works exactly, as it is out of my boundaries, but I do know that they have... Magic.
Depending on the world you could live as well as in this one, with modern conveniences, automatic lights and elevators. But knowing you and your likes and dislikes, and I do know a lot about you Alex, a world with magic will do just fine. I will choose a world with the most beautiful scenery for your love for the arts.
Now, I must deal with this and seven other billion people. Until then, so that your soul may rest and your integrity is preserved in the coming travel trough the 'Multi-verse' as some may call... Is that even the right term? I will put you to rest and end our conversation here. It will be like a nap, you won't remember our conversation... Hm, actually... I don't think it will be a problem if you remember some of it. "
God said before Alex felt like he hasn't slept in two days and was staying up using caffeine and nicotine.
"Don't you worry about your family, you know I'm always looking out for them, right?"
That last bit of information made his incorporeal shoulders relax and, with a soft 'thump', Alex's head hit the little angel pillow to the side of the couch as he fell asleep.
