Prologue

Beep… Beep… Beep… the beeping was getting louder. The constant sound that had become his companion. Always present, never fading. Like the darkness it never went away. Such loyal companions.

Light. The bright lights of day streamed through the slights of his eyes. Opening his eyes all he could see was an unfamiliar white ceiling. He looked to the side to find the beeping. A heart monitor.

‘Oh I get it. I was in an accident and now I’m hospitalized.’

Then that night came back before his eyes. He had been driving in the night when a bright streak of light had appeared in his peripheral vision. Another reckless driver had trashed his car. That would be the second one this year.

“Jake”, called a familiar voice.

It was his mother. So kind an caring yet how had he remained here for so long. He was supposed to be far away studying.

‘Oh that’s right, summer.’

His college didn’t have class during the summer and he came home. Well looks like the bad luck came back to.

Eventually after many test with the doctor, he was able to confirm that his foot was still messed up as it had been. Throughout his childhood and even to the last day of high school his bad luck got him into many accidents and resulted in a permanently damaged right foot, rendering him unable to play sports.

As soon as he got home he went straight to his room without saying a greeting to anyone. He opened the door and on his desk was a single sheet of square paper. The crisp white color beckoned him to come. He could see the square paper and all that it could become, all with a few creases and folds. After being crippled by a multitude of injuries he quit tae kwon do to pursue origami a finer art. His hands never seemed to get injured so he could keep folding. Eventually he could fold a crane with one hand in six seconds flat. Nothing could stop him from making the paper into a beautiful work of art.

After a good ten minutes the figure was done. Standing on his desk was a small rendition of a crane. Its majestic wings spread as it brought about glory to the victors of war. If only I could do this more often he thought. Paper had become a luxury good. After technology became an irreplaceable part of human lives, paper had become obsolete. Very few companies had the right to produce paper. Even few had the right to produce quality paper that was big enough and thin enough to fold advanced designs. Also the fact that trees had become extremely scarce and the environmentalist movements, made the already crippled paper market to the size it was today. It was almost impossible to find good paper now. Only privileged still used it and Jake and a few others were the only ones who actually folded it. Looking back on the crane on his desk he should have made something else, he thought with regret. But he would not destroy his creation for everything he made was valuable to him in a way. He placed the crane into his collection with his other figures. There was a vast array of mythical creatures like dragons, pegasus, unicorns and other creatures that would only exist in fantasy.

A light breached through the window, waking him from his thoughts. The dazzling ray of heavenly light spread a reddish glow throughout his room. As always as the sun sets it illuminates his room like fires of hell, being that his room was on the east side of the house. Then he noticed. A foreign object. His room had always been plain. A bed, a desk, a dresser, not much besides the essentials. What was it and what was it doing in his room. A sleek silver capsule just bigger than an average person rested in the far corners of his room. The glare of the morning sun was radiating off the cover. He had played limited amounts of MMORPGs in the past although they were way to restrictive. But he had heard that one could do anything in this game, even create skills. Could he possibly get quality paper through the game? Well I might as well kill some monsters to clear some stress.
