Chpater 1.

I always did want to get isekai'd.

There I said it.

Ever since I was exposed to the genre -and honestly way before- I always dreamed about getting drawn into the books and stories that were my friends.

I mean who doesn't want to go on an adventure? To carry the one ring to Mordor, to meet incredibly hot elves, dine with princesses and princes. To wield a lightsaber and battle Sith, righting wrongs in the galaxy.

And above all to matter, to be powerful.

Instead of mellowing in our cruel reality and our powerlessness to change it.

I'm sure in practice there would be a lot less awesome adventures and a lot more gruesome reality.

But seeing as this particular dream had less of a chance of happening then me waking one day as a billionaire, I didn't really care about that.

It's not like I would ever get isekai'd for real, that's impossible.

I suppose the impossible is only impossible because no one has done it yet…

Or ever returned to tell their story.

Which I suppose is fair.

I almost died the instant I appeared in this new realm -not that I knew this at the time, not comprehending the sudden change in my environment.

Thankfully, I ducked on instinct and instead of finding an axe in the back in my head, I had the pleasure to watch it bite into the neck of some knight, pricing the reinforced chain mail protecting it and drawing blood.

I watched the knight fall, drowning on his own blood, he was still alive, the wound would claim him slowly and painfully.

Fear helped me shove the sight of death away from my mind and turn to look at my potential killer.

What I found was a mountain of muscles in a green package.

Blood red eyes, sharp tusks jutting out of his lips, a mad smile and a blood-stained axe the creature -that could only be an orc straight out of fantasy- towered above me.

Now, I considered myself a tall guy -and as a six seven, factually I was- but this dude?

He had a full head on me.

So, I did the only reasonable thing I could.

I ran.

I ran with all my might, screaming all the while.

And to my misfortune, the orc gave chase. And he was catching.

I was a good runner and adrenaline gave me power I never knew I had and yet for every step I took, my pursuer managed two.

In my haste to get away, I stumbled over something and fell to the ground.

Looking over I saw it was a knight corpse with an axe stuck in his helmet.

I heard a growl from above me. Jerking my head toward the sound I saw the blood-stained Axe descending toward my head.

As I faced my death time seemed to slow down, I could only hear a single thought cascading through my head.

I don’t want to die.

I tried to scrap away but I knew it was futile.

I closed my eyes, expecting pain and oblivion.

Yet it never came.

The sound of metal impacting flesh came and went but not from me, instead it came from the Orc above me.

Opening my eyes, I saw another knight standing above me. The orc crumpled over his large shield.

The knight didn’t acknowledge me, he swiftly decapitated the orc on his shield and rushed away -far faster than anyone wearing heavy armor should be able to- a battle cry on his lips.

With the immediate danger passed I allowed myself a moment to breath. This moment allowed me to refocus on my surroundings.

Which is how I found out I was on a battlefield. And surrounding me where hundreds of orcs and knights locked in brutal fighting.

Thankfully, I seemed to be closer to the backlines rather than the front -where the bulk of the fighting was happening- not that it mattered as the lines were loose enough that even here there were more than enough orcs to occupy the knights fighting them.

Deciding that discretion is the better part of valor, I pry the bloodied sword form the knight corpse I stumbled over -I need it far more the he- and made haste to break out of the battle, avoiding the orcs and knights to the best of my ability.

My heart pounding in my chest all the while.

Suddenly, I heard a great whistling in the air. Glancing back, terror gripped my heart as arrows blotted out the sky.

All the knights raised their shields -some even started glowing- and didn’t seem worried about the death raining upon them.

And why would they? They are covered head to toe in armor.

I'm not.

With instincts I didn’t know I possessed, I dived for one of the knight corpses strown about and the shield that laid beside it.

The shield was long and thick, made of a metal I didn’t recognize and colored red and yellow but above all it was heavy.

Heavy enough I could never lift it off the ground.

But I didn’t need to, I just needed to lift it enough I could take cover behind it.

As I did so, I noticed that the shield was cracked and its top right part was missing.

But I had no time to find another and so I huddled beneath it, praying that I would live.

Apparently, something heard me. As the arrow after arrow hit and hadn’t managed to pierce through.

When the sound of arrows stopped and sound of fighting began anew, I poked my head from behind the shield I used as cover and surveyed the blood-soaked battlefield.

From the brief look I managed, before hunkering below the shield once more, it seemed as if the knights weathered the arrows with little damage, although a few of them had arrows sticking out of their armor.

Yet while the arrows did little to them, it was obvious -even to my untrained eyes- that the knights were losing.

Even the loose lines of mere moment's ago didn't seem to hold, the battle had gone from organized to a complete brawl and while it took like five orcs to bring down a knight, the orcs outnumbered the knights ten to one.

This fact only strengthened my resolve to flee this place and thankfully I was already close to breaking out.

Only a short dash and I would be out of the battle and then I could run to the forest I see in the distance and disappear.

Hopefully, even if the orcs deicide to pursue they won't manage to find me, I had my doubts I could outrun them but hiding? That I could do.

Yet before I could enact my plan, a gray scroll appeared in front of my face and unfolded itself.

In shock at the unexpected appearance, I instinctively read the words on the scroll.

Atia, goddess of Bravery and Valor has issued you a divine quest.

Quest: Help the legion of Astra repel the Orcish horde.

Reward: Access to the Paladin (Chosen of Atia) class, a divine blessing.

Penalty for failure: A divine curse.

The fuck is happening?

A divine quest?

Atia?

What have I landed myself into? I'm only a normal human.

What can I do to influence a battle between fantasy knights -which I suppose are the legion of Astra- and orcs???

I don't know what a divine curse intel's but it doesn't sound good. Yet I know the outcome if I tried to intervene in this battle.

I would die.

I would rather be cursed by a god then go to certain death, so I prepared myself to sprint away.

But as I was plotting the ideal path, I spotted a more decorated corpse, this knight had his helmet adorned with long feathers of some kind and his armor possessed golden highlights.

This told me he was important, likely an officer or even the commander of the legion, more importantly at his belt I spotted a horn and an insane idea wormed its way into my mind.

I suppose there is no reason to try, its not out of my way and I can still flee afterwords.

I lose nothing and might not be cursed afterall.

With a plan in my mind, I dashed to the corpse and picked up the horn.

I brought it my lips -Atia if you are there this is the best I can do- and blew with all my might.

Blowing a horn is a lot more difficult than it seemed, thankfully, I had practice from attempting to blow those horns on Yom Kippur every year. The sound coming out of the horn was loud, deep and steady.

The next part would be worthless if they couldn't understand me but I was committed, so I breathed deeply and bellowed out "Reinforcements, reinforcements are coming!" I could feel something different in my voice, some kind of energy flowing through it but I Ignored it and continued "Hold, hold until they arrive!!".

I couldn’t say if my words had any effect and I wasn’t planning to stay to find out, I threw the horn to the ground, turned tail and ran.

It wasn’t until I was already deep into the woods, that I received a massage I didn’t believe would actually come.

Quest Complete.
