Chapter 1 - Rapture

Chapter 1 - Rapture

I've never been afraid of death.

In fact, being alive scares me more than anything else.

Being strong was never my desire, but understand, nobody has ever seen me as weak; life has strange ways of shaping us, sometimes a weak person is strong and sometimes not. Perhaps that's why when it was said that a giant meteor was going to collide with Earth, I wasn't afraid.

Many people killed themselves and others simply pretended it was all a lie. Deep down, I just wanted to have a good view of the end.

When some ships left for space, fleeing, what made me angry wasn't being abandoned; I was never relevant enough to be considered a key piece, but knowing that my pets would die in pain made me mad and more than that, I hated myself because I didn't have the courage to kill them.

"Sorry Guts and Témis, your dad is too weak, but I promise I'll stay with you and your pain will be mine too, forgive me for not giving you the life you deserved. I failed."

"Life is funny and scary, all at the same time, in greater or lesser intensity."

That same night, while separating a bottle of water, I realized that the electricity was gone and I could feel the gravity interfering in my body. In the dark of the night, the sound of sobs was easily heard from outside and it bothered me; one thing is not having the courage to die, like me, another was being afraid to live, for me; staying on the fence was never an option.

While hugging my two dogs as tightly as I could, I closed my eyes and a tear rolled from my face to my cheeks that shimmered a sincere smile.

"My love, I'm coming for you, I thought it would take longer, but if there's one thing I've learned, it's that life always finds a way to death."

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Next to my bed on the nightstand, a forgotten picture of a smiling couple looked at me. Life took more than I wanted and gave me more than I deserved, so I guess we're even.

When I woke up the next day, my children were still sleeping at my feet and the strangeness of everything made me scratch my neck.

"Why do I feel like I'm not dead?"

I sat up in bed and thought about everything that was happening, and I was shocked by a fact.

"How can I be alive?"

As I got up to check the rooms of the house, I realized it wasn't night, I could see the daylight slowly penetrating through the cracks in the closed windows. I felt scared.

"What if the sky doesn't exist and I look up and there are only stars?"

My mind was wandering between being dead and afraid of being alive. I headed to the living room with the intention of looking outside, but a loud sound filled the room. It was loud enough for me to hear as if it was inside my ear, but at the same time comforting.

"In your immense arrogance, you thought you were unique and in the fear of the end, you turned against yourselves. Less than half survived and far less than that accepted the end. For you, I say that the planting has been done, even with perjury of death, hatred, and tedious mistakes; some got it right and for you, it's time for the harvest."

My eyes closed automatically and I could feel energy entering my body. Like a glass filling up, I felt something different, a force or more precisely, a path.

When I opened my eyes, I saw a screen floating in front of me, like in those virtual reality games. It seemed to be there, but at the same time not. It displayed some information:

Broken soul Class: Unknown Race: Human

Jonathan Age: 37

Level: 1

Strength: 3

Intelligence: 8

Agility: 2

Dexterity: 2

Endurance: 2

Mana: 1

Notes: Not special, a common person with common thoughts and a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to him and his name, when he dies, he will soon be forgotten; but in one aspect, he had as glorious a success as anyone who ever lived. He loved another person with his heart and soul, and for him, that will always be enough.

As I read his information, I didn't realize that my body was glowing intensely. Tears rolled down my face with the text that reflected my feelings. In the blink of an eye, I disappeared from the world.
