Chapter 14: Small talk

Chapter 14: Small talk

The situation seems a bit tense as the winds outside howled against the small research station, bad weather resulting in a very peculiar situation ‘You know… maybe taking up on that offer might have been a… not so great idea, they probably think our survival depends on them now’ Lorrisskr composed glaring at the black skinned one in particular.

She let out a low hiss as she turned to her brother “Fallkschrimm, why do we have to go with the aliens again?” She sang her question whilst not taking her eyes off of the alien in question whom seem to be doing the same to her “We already talked about this, Sylksskra believed that if we follow them in than we can show them that we mean no harm plus they seem nice” He sang his response.

“Fallkschrimm, that one has a bolt caster, it is dangerous!” She hissed at him “What? It’s probably as stressed and afraid as you are, it knows not what we look like or our intentions before just now and we need to enlighten it for it to lose its tension, it will be alright” He assured her as she tilted her head “Also you are literally in actual combat gear right now” He also added as she pointed towards their height.

“Okay, they’re also a bit bigger than this one would’ve preferred, though they are a bit cute” He admitted soon after “Yeah, cute… the largest one is a head taller than this one who is taller than average for a female, they’re huge especially for a male such as yourself” She reminded him astutely.

He lowered his crown feathers and looked at her “So what? Does size actually matter or anything? This one can see that you are wearing an EXO-Enhancement gear and that should get rid of any strength advantage from size and well, their planet’s gravity is a tad bit lower than the average gravity on Kassia after all so no one can be too sure” Fallkschrimm explained as he nuzzled her to calm her down a bit.

She let out a low hiss as she continued to monitor the alien in question “This one is interested in their religion and all of that” She admitted as her crest feathers rose a bit and brightened “That’s the spirit, you are the most religious of the pack after all, just hang back and learn” He sang back with brightness.

She let out a short breath as she watched the aliens “Almost the rest of this one’s pack is here, it is because of that that this one is keen to protect on such as yourself and Sylksskra, this one shall not hesitate if the aliens mayhaps turn aggressive on us” She sang her intent as her brother looked at her with a bit of worry judging on how his crown feathers coiled and darkened.

“That is not good, mayhaps we should just do nothing of the sort and mayhaps they see that we are-” “So that they can kill us undeterred and steal our voidcraft? If they have some sort of weapon to destroy the KCN Valistesia than the aliens here can kill us and have a warp capable voidcraft, if they are aggressive and kill us, they might reverse our technology to hunt us all down” She sang in a terse tone.

“If they go aggressive, this one will take down those who try to harm her pack or any other of our kind” She sang as a winged hand held her right arm “Well, this one would like for you to be a bit less cautious if possible as this one would prefer to study live aliens rather than dead ones” He trilled as he sang.

She did not and he soon stopped ‘Still, suppose this one is being a bit too cautious about the whole thing as the Constable’ She composed as she turned from the human she kept staring at “Very well, this one will try to concur with your wishes Archivist Fallkschrimm” She sang as she splayed her sensory organs.

He beamed brightly as he heard her words though Lorrisskr didn’t really cared much about that as she patted him on the head before turning to the second alien in the room, the one with the long crown or crest feathers ‘By the way, what is taking Sylksskra so long with the translation instrument?’ She wondered as she stood guard in what seem to be the common living room of the facility.

‘Okay what is Phil doing with the alien in the back room that is taking so long? I want to speak to them already’ Ellie thought as she stared at the 2 other aliens that were left behind as they seem to spoke to one another in their own weird space language which sounds strange yet beautiful at the same time.

She continued to breath heavily as she studied their forms further as she tried to reach out but stopped herself ‘R-Right, must not pet the fluffy space raptors, Phil banned me from petting them though he was right about what they are, he should buy a lottery ticket with that luck’ She thought as she sighed.

“Ellie, I see what you tried to do there, you don’t know where that thing’s been all day, it could be that they carry an incurable disease that can affect us all and kill all of us!” Matt stressed quietly as Ellie just looked at him funny “Don’t worry about it, the aliens don’t really seem to be wearing any protective equipment for some reason which means they’re onto something” She whispered back to his ear.

That doesn’t seem to ease his worries much though “But what if it’s on purpose? What do we do then?” He asked her with worry in his eyes ‘Wow, I’d never thought he’d be this scared of actual aliens before, he was pretty composed just a few weeks ago’ She thought as she looked around a bit.

“Okay, I actually don’t know which is why I’m going to ask them right now!” She announced as she turned to walk towards the aliens without a care in the world ‘This is fine, I’m not hyper reacting or anything, it’s normal to be excited in situations such as this’ She told herself as she cleared her throat.

“Hello there, I’ve been wondering but why do you not have environmental suits on? Are you guys not afraid of potential bacterial infections?” She asked with a straight face as Matt was screaming something behind her though she was too busy studying the alien expressions to register it as she watched them in fascination.

They looked at each other before the larger one bumped the smaller one with their snout which was weird, strange and cute. It looked at her for a few moments before it spoke “Yissk?” It hissed out and she got the meaning “Oh so you do know and are afraid of it right?” She asked as she stood watching.

The alien in front froze before it looked back at the other one who seem to actually palm their face ‘Oh that’s a familiar feature… unless it means something else’ She thought as she stared to which the one at front looked back and slowly but surely not nod but it was an honest attempt.

“So why do you guys not protect yourselves?” She asked as it tilted its head seemingly in confusion to the question “Why you no keep tiny things out?” she asked slowing her voice and tone as the front aliens seem at lost at how to translate its intention or it simply did not understand.

The one in the back came up as the first one called it, Ellie was no short woman but though the first one seemed to be a bit shorter than her and perfectly cute, the second was a full head and a half taller than her which was a bit intimidating ‘If not for how cute they look’ She added as she watched it.

It reached out towards her but stopped before it slowly moved to lightly grab her wrist ‘I wonder if it’s trying not to hurt me because they’re secretly super strong’ She thought as it put something on her hand and she instinctually grabbed at the cold metal of the weird object.

She turned to Matt who was staring with a mix of confusion, intrigue and panic as he seemed ready to start something though she gave him the look to tell him that she was fine though she wasn’t sure how well he actually received it but at least she made the attempt which was all that matters for her.

It then pointed with its 3 clawed hands oddly without wings contrary to the other 2 at a switch like part of the weird metal object and immediately a certain light flashed out from one side ‘Oh it’s a sort of flashlight but why is the light blue?’ She thought as it directed her to point it at itself.

There she saw around the region which the flashlight shunned that there was a faint blue glimmer that seem to surround the alien creature’s body ‘Shields! They have actual energy shields!’ She thought as she realized the implication “Shields! The aliens have bloody energy shields” Matt cried from behind as the alien just repeated the nod the other one just did a few moments ago before taking back the object.

‘If they’re confident enough to be showing skin on an alien planet than their shields systems must be quite advanced to be able to deal with the tiny microbes but it grabbed me and my pets went through… OH GOD WHAT IF I INFECTED THEM?’ She worried as the alien patted her on the head.

It then went back behind the first one ‘I guess I did infect them on something’ She lightly chuckled as she realized that she might’ve gave them the wrong impression on humanity’s greeting “Sorry about that, I’ll just go now goodbye” She bowed as she stepped back quickly and the aliens seem to went back to their talks as they splayed their ears and antenna out like in a shrugging manner which was fascinating.

She went over to Matt “I think we managed to learn a lot from them today” She smiled as she said that “Yeah, we learnt that they have energy shields and I think I know how to bypass them” Matt agreed though on a different type of sentiment “How so?” She asked as she realized the answer soon after.

“Well, from what I can see their shields seem to be designed to stop microorganisms from getting into their personal zones or something sure, I don’t know for sure but we don’t know if it can stop bullets or not but what it can’t stop are physical contacts… your incessant pettings of cute creatures is paying off here” He explained his observations as she just groaned “Don’t attack them” She reminded him.

“Look, there are maybe 6 things I actually care about in this fucked up world of ours and I’m not letting those alien bastards take 2 of those away from me whatsoever” He whispered with such fervor that she was sure that the aliens could actually hear him considering their perking ears.

“May god forgive the guilty” He quickly added in prayer as Ellie just sighed “I’m not going to stop you from doing what you want, I physically cannot when you’re like 6ft tall and then some but please do think about the rest of humanity and try not to start war for the Earth here please” She asked him as he too sighed and nodded “I shall try my best and may got held my hand in times of hardship” He agreed.

She let out a breath of relief, one that she didn’t know she was holding at all ‘Oh crap that was anxious… I think I need to get some rest once in a while now but… it’s good to see that he actually cares and if there really is a god up there, I hope that they bless us with a good impression for the aliens’ She hoped as the room fell silent, waiting for the last 2 members of both groups to finish their private discussions.

Phil took a breath as he stared straight at the alien in front of him ‘Okay Phil, what did you get yourself into this time?’ He wondered as it was now him and the lead alien alone in a small room as they plan to discuss some small manners privately after the aliens agreed to say in the station for a bit.

The hastening winds of the coming blizzard batted against the walls of the station causing some minor disturbances in sound as both sides stared at each other intently in what was an empty room that was mostly used as storage until it was cleared out recently for a large folded table and chairs.

Apparently, the aliens do sit and the foldable chairs makes for great interspecies resting as the tail of the alien seem to be able to easily slip out from behind ‘Alright then, here goes what might be the most important meeting for humanity… god do I need a drink’ He thought as he cleared his throat.

“So, what do we call you folks? We can’t just keep calling you people the ‘Aliens’ forever” He asked as he crossed his arms as the alien’s ears seem to perk up to pick at it as it stumbled a bit before operating the device once carried by the smaller one currently in the living room with Matt and Ellie.

It started to play the device as if it was an instrument like the other one did “You can call us Ferrets… no sorry, you can call us… let this one do it out, F-E-R-R-E-N-T-I, it is best you call us that” The device sang out the butchered words in English as the alien called out the name as well which sounded nicer but also not as understandable ‘Okay so, Ferrenti… that does not sound alien enough at all’ He thought sighing.

“Well, we are the humans and welcome to Earth, you… Ferrenti… gods that sounds weird to actually say now that I said it out loud” He admitted as he botched his speech ‘Never mind that earlier thought, it’s alien enough when you put it to words and actually pronounce it like how the alien did it’ He thought.

“F-…-rr-ean-sktri-…-i” The alien spoke in its native tongue as he looked up at it “That is how said, you need not said like it” The alien assured him as he just nodded “Okay, so ‘Ferrenti’ right?” He asked as the alien mimicked his nod “Do you mind if I just say Ferrenti rather than the correct term because I don’t think I can speak that well enough” He asked as he watched the alien’s head feathers seem to darken.

‘Oh crap, what have I done’ He worried for a second “That is well, this one has none problems” It answered and he breathed a sigh of relief “Oh… welcome to Earth then and we call ourselves the humans, I hope you find your visit enjoyable” He quickly said as the alien perked its ears up.

“Yes, your kind is called Humanity and the body is known as Dirt” The alien nodded which seem to be getting better as it responded “You know what consider how much I butchered your species name that is a good enough translation of our planet and species” He admitted as the alien hiss lowly at that.

‘It’s strange how universal the sigh of relief is, it was more of a hiss on their part but it still looked and sounded similar enough’ He thought as he noted the gesture down “This one is happy to enlighten that, our planet name is Kassia” Came the response translated from the machine.

He nodded as he replied “That’s a good name, on another topic about names what is your name?” He asked as he tapped his finger on the table as he saw the alien take a deep breath “SSry-…-llls-skk-…-aar” It spoke in its native language ‘Okay, they definitely speak at a much higher frequency’ He thought as he ingested the weird pronounced word “Sylksskra… this is what instrument plays” Came the machine.

“How about I just call you Sylvia? It’s a hell of a lot easier than me trying to call you by your real name” He suggested as the alien tilted its head “Think of it like a nickname… wait you guys might not have that, it’s like a name that others call you or something like that” He continue to prod as he spoke.

The alien seemed to ponder it as it let its tail swish behind it “Is that female or male name?” It asked through the translation machine “Female” He quickly answered as it suddenly chirped out “This one think that is well, you can call this one how you want” She replied as he nodded.

“Oh, so you’re a girl right?” He asked her “What is… the word?” Sylvia asked through the machine “It’s just another way of saying female like the word guy which means male… I’m a guy” He explained with a nod “You are male” Came the realization as she seemed to dart her vision around which was strange.

‘Judging by the body dimorphism and the way she reacted, it seems like the females are the bigger and more dominant one which means the smaller one must be a male… fascinating difference there’ Phil noted it down on his mind as he just nodded at the question and so did Sylvia.

“Very well, what is you name?” Asked Sylvia through the machine “Phillis, Phillis Evergreen but just call me Phil” He responded as she seemed to nod at that “This one shall refer to one such as yourself as Phrillisk than” Came the response as he blinked in confusion in a moment.

She seems to notice this as a sign of confusion “You gave this one a… other name so this one gave you a other name, is fair” She explains as she shook it away “Yes, it is quite fair indeed, say it’s getting dark right now, how about we just take whatever we gathered and get back to it tomorrow” Phil suggested.

She seems taken aback by this which causes him to panic a bit “Dark is good, is good time to sing, one should rest at light time not dark time” She explained in a bit of confusion, her antenna seemed to droop in front “OH! Your species is nocturnal than” Phil realized as she nodded slowly to that.

“This one would assume that means that you kind is light walker… no that is not right… you get it right?” She ask as Phil nodded “Yes so that should complicate things a bit” He admitted as he realized the potential problems “It is fine, this one shall take her pack back to craft for the darkness and come to in the light and we shall speak of it the next day” Sylvia suggested as Phil just nodded along.

“That would be nice, thank you for not causing a fit or anyth-pretend I didn’t say that” He shut his mouth up though that didn’t stop the light trilling that came “Is fine, is best we go with your kind’s hospitality as it is your world” She sang as he laughed back ‘I think the trilling is their form of laughter… I need to write this all in soon, it is all so fascinating’ He decided as the meeting is over as night rolled in.
