Chapter 6
“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” - Kenobi
I spent the next couple of days exploring the local area with Scout. It was a dangerous place to be a cat. Did you know people ate cats? There were a lot of near misses. My Eye of Death perk really came in handy. It worked kind of weird though. It couldn’t predict the future, but it allowed me to see who was most likely about to die.
It looked like the Grim Reaper showing up and following around the person who was just about to die. Yeah, it was the same scary Death guy who was at my funeral. Black cloak, scythe and all.
Good to know that he was still around, and that I hadn’t murdered him. I was surprised to see Death was still alive though. He looked pretty dead last time I saw him. And that got me thinking, maybe this wasn’t the same Death. What if there were more than one of them? If two people were going to die in different places, then would two Deaths show up? The Death who came to my funeral didn’t seem like he was in a rush. How could he be in multiple places at once? Surely, someone else had died at the same time as me. And wasn’t I on a different planet? How could he be here and back on Earth? There had to be more than one Death. I hadn’t tested that theory out yet though. There could just be one, really productive, Death. Like Santa on Christmas or something like that.
So far, this Death hadn’t recognised me in my cat body. But I was staying out of his way. I wasn’t going to gamble with my soul just to find out if Death remembered me.

Anyway, this one time, Death seemed to be following Scout and I around the fish market stalls, and yeah, that was very creepy. Unfortunately, Scout, like everyone else, couldn’t see Death coming. Anytime Death was nearby, I was on high alert, and I just knew something bad was going to happen when the reaper followed us to the nearby alley that we had retreated to.
So we immediately changed our plans and ran back home to the safety of our rooftop. Luckily Death seemed to change its mind and floated away in search of more likely victims. It seemed that Death only followed someone when there was a high likelihood of them dying, like some sort of soul scavenger.
Which is good to know, but it’s super scary when you see Death walking through a crowd of people, and no one else but you can see him. It’s like, who’s it going to be this time? That’s probably how two kittens like Scout and I survived the big city for those first couple of days.
Food was getting really tight back home with Mumma Cat, and the pressure was mounting for me to move out and get my own place. One month old and I hadn’t moved out of my parent’s house yet. Pretty embarrassing, I know. But secret hideout rent was expensive, okay.
