Chapter 0 - The Bet

A week or so from today I “awakened” or you could call it whatever you want. It’s not important in any way or form, the term used that is. My name is Tanya, a girlish name for a girlish guy, I got shoulder length hair tied in a ponytail most of the time and am around a meter and seventy centimeters tall. A bit below average in that department I reckon.

Well, let me tell you a bit about the society I live in. A society where the ruling class is selected from a dozen or so winners of the Grand Tournament, in anyway, the dozen or so people are all talented people.

And by “talented” I do not mean they excel in one particular area. By “talented” I meant people that are supernaturally gifted.

We, as I too am now part of that demographic, are called Breakers. Those who broke through our mortal shackles and got gifted by an aspect.

My aspect is the Aspect of Humanity. And my connection to it is manifested in the form of cards.

I can create a card set of three cards. Each harboring a single intent. Heal, Strengthen, Damage.

My talent is useless needless to say. At least now, as I am telling you this.

“People get turned into monsters all the time. From the Far Lands to our little corner of the world we’ve all seen or at least heard from someone a tale of a man turned monster. From when we were little…” and I cut him out and stopped listening. It seems that I am the rude one. I am in the middle of class thinking to myself like always.

I look around and see nothing but blank faces and the dregs of society I used to belong to. I couldn’t help myself as a smile formed on my face and slowly changed into a grin.

I really am an insane bastard. I guess I can’t blame them though, they were born from non-Breakers and will never become ones themselves.

For I though? I was a child of a beautiful woman and an unknown man. My mother never told me who he was or where he was. All I knew was that I had a father and my older brother was with him.

“Ergh-hm.” I heard someone clear their throat. It was my teacher. I could see the nervousness on her face. She wouldn’t want to offend someone who was now a Breaker, even if I am the lowest one possible. “W-Would you mind paying attention? You still have to attend our school for a week!” Her voice growing louder as time passed.

I looked at her and what I saw was a woman in her early thirties with short blond hair and average looks, bags under her eyes. She wore a sweater and some baggy pants. I guess there’s no need to follow the dress code if no one even cared about you.

“Sure.” I said and started paying attention to class.

Some might call me conceited and arrogant for suddenly turning my backs to the people I spent the most time with if we’re not counting family. I wouldn’t. I wasn’t turning my back to anyone, I was always like this, which made me a prime target for harassment.

“People without opinions die young.” A raspy feminine voice behind me said.

“No comment.” I answered to the girl behind me and turned around.

“Didn’t you say you’ll pay attention to class?” I looked at the stupid girl who for some reason was acting nice to me this whole time.

Adorning a bob-cut and thick reading glasses, it was the typical face of a nerd. She was short, thin and had a scary deep voice for a girl. The complete opposite of what most men imagined their other pair to look like.

The only notable thing about was her pale gray hair. Which it itself many speculated was just dyed that way.

“Sure, whatever, grab me a drink when break starts, I know you’ll go get yourself one too.” I handed her money for two drinks and turned around.

“You’ll really die if you continue doing things this way. Find a path for yourself.” She gave me back the money and continued talking about that dying business.

“What’s with you al---.” I started speaking when I heard the bell.

“Class’s done!” The teacher left as soon as the bell rang so I continued.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

“What’s wrong with you lately? Stop being so gloomy and just get me a drink.”

“Get one yourself.” She took her bag and left with a frown on her face.

“Right…” I was sort of dazed, fair to say I never saw her act like this in the whole two years we spent together.

“Oh what’s that the trash pair suddenly broke up? What an S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E!” A big hand grabbed my shoulder. I should’ve known that some people wouldn’t be scared of me. I turned around and glared at the guy who was a head taller than me.

“What do you want?”

“Did you know my parents were actually Breakers too? Which means you’re still trash in my eyes, even if I haven’t awakened yet. Meet me tomorrow on the rooftop.” He patted my shoulder and left with a grin on his face which made me frown with displeasure.

I took my bag and made my way home too. I was done with this school for the rest of my life for all that I cared.

What awaited me at home was my mother and a woman I never saw before.

“Oh, Tanya, you’re back already?” mom turned to me with surprise showing on her face.

“Class ended earlier than expected. Who might this be?” I smiled and turned to the woman who was with her.

“Your new school’s main team’s leader. Her name is--” just as she was to tell me her name the woman took out her hand for a handshake as she said:

“Temu “Temmy” Lang, you may call me miss Lang.” her eyes were like those of a snake’s. I had a feeling she wouldn’t be a good person to me as soon as I entered the school.

I grabbed her hand and shook it as I said: “Nice to meet you Lang, the name is Tanya Kamil, you may call me Kamil.” I wouldn’t treat her respect, not even if I was on the death bed and she had a potion that could prolong my life by another hundred years.

“Miss.” She smiled and took out papers. “I need you to write all the details about your ability before we can proceed with the other interview.”

“Interview? Didn’t I already enter the school through the recommendation letter? What’s the point of this then?” I was suspicious.

“It is common courtesy of our school to investigate everything about our students, and we had problems with finding any info about your family since none of your relatives were Breakers except your missing father.” She said seriously. I could tell that she had suspicious about the ways I obtained a recommendation letter for the most prestigious school in the city.

“Alright then, let me fill this out and we’ll go our own ways then.” I said and started filling out the papers she gave me.

“Would you mind telling me how you are faring with your ability so far? Have you seen any backlash from using your ability?” She eyed me apprehensively as it seemed she was looking for any kind of abnormality on my body. “By the way, was your skin always light gray or did it only become like that after your awakening?”

“Are you undergoing the interview right now, Lang?” I looked back and forth between her and the papers I was filling out.

“Miss.” She added and continued “It is of utmost importance that our members didn’t artificially awaken their abilities no matter what, so your case is without guarantee a suspicious abnormality here. How could we believe a bastard from the slums could awaken to anything except some bumpkin-like disease?” She seemed to have finally lost it and sneered as she looked at me with a shit-eating grin.

I needed to stay calm though, but, god damn it, I couldn’t. She insulted my mother by saying I was a bastard. Mom said that father knew and loved me as much as he loved my older brother. There had to be reasons I wasn’t taken with him as well as mom.

“I’d like it if you stopped speaking. I’ll answer the questions, as for your comments let’s pretend you apologized and not go further into that issue, how about that?” I glared at her and sighed. I guess I really didn’t become that much stronger if I couldn’t even continue to glare at her.

“Let’s not. Did you really think that someone like you could enter our school? I’ll do my utmost best to kick you out of there, even if it means crippling all of your limbs! I honor purity and your bloodline is missing that! I want you out of my school before you even enter it! And I’ll manage to do it.” She seemed to have finally lost it.

“Tell me, do you believe in gravity? Do you believe your words have any gravity upon this situation? What are you? A leader of the school’s main team, right? How about a bet then? In three months, I’ll take over your position and kick every member of the school’s main team out of the city. How does that sound? You have nothing to lose, right? After all, I am nothing more than a bumpkin that got lucky? Aren’t those your words Temu Lang?!” I stood up and spread my arms like a madman, because I might as well be one at this moment.

“What’s in it for me? I doubt you have anything of value.”

“I’ll sell my life to you, also. Mom.” I turned to mom and asked her for a black box father left me. “This box.”

“This is?” Her eyes slowly widened as she inspected the box more clearly. “H-how do you have a Dark Goldwood Container? What’s in it?” she looked at me differently now. It was greed.

“I have no idea. But what I do know is that I am the only one that can open it. So don’t even think of stealing it. Do you agree to this wager or shall I just continue with your little play you prepared at me in the school.”

“You damn well know this is more beneficial to me in any way and form. I accept the bet. I shall see you on the school’s tournament stage in three months’ time. If your team loses your whole being belongs to me.” She took the papers I filled out and left me with a student ID and a smartwatch.

“T-Tanya, how could you make a bet like that?!” Ah.

I completely forgot mom was there, not. I turned to her and smiled gently as I hugged her.

“Don’t worry I’ll find a way to win. Until then, I hope you have a good and silent life as I won’t be here to protect you anymore in a week’s time.” I told her and released her from my hug and went to my room.

“It seems that she’s suspicious of you, child.” An ancient voice entered my mind as I entered the room.

I giggled and laid down on the bed.

“Time to stop freeloading old man, teach me how to get stronger.”
