Chapter 4: Hidden Potential

Chapter 4: Hidden Potential

As the morning sun cast its warm glow upon the town, Alexander woke up feeling completely exhausted. His body ached, and his eyelids felt heavy. He could sense his parents' concern as they entered his room.

"Alex, what happened to you?" his mother asked, worry etched on her face.

His father sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "We knew you were up to something after yesterday's class, but we had no idea you'd overexert yourself like this."

Alexander mustered a weak smile. "I'm sorry, Mom, Dad. I just wanted to learn more about mana. I didn't mean to worry you."

His mother's eyes softened, and she approached his bedside. "Sweetheart, we understand your curiosity, but harnessing mana takes time and guidance. You shouldn't push yourself like this."

His father nodded in agreement. "We did the same thing when we were your age, Alex. But we didn't feel as tired as you do now. You have to be careful."

Alexander nodded, understanding their concern. "I promise, Mom, Dad. I'll be more careful."

His mother's expression softened, and she held out her hand. "Let me help you, dear." She began murmuring a healing incantation, her gentle touch soothing his tired body. The warmth of her magic enveloped him, revitalizing his weary muscles.

After the rejuvenating spell, Alexander felt a renewed energy coursing through his veins, He then jumped up and got ready for school. His parents exchanged a knowing look, a mixture of pride and worry in their eyes. They bid him farewell, urging him to take it easy at school.

When Alexander arrived at school, he noticed Tristan's slumped shoulders and droopy eyes. The previous night's failed attempt at harnessing mana had taken its toll on his friend as well. Alexander approached Tristan with a sympathetic smile.

"Hey, Tristan. Rough night, huh?" Alexander said, his voice filled with understanding.

Tristan yawned and rubbed his eyes. "Yeah, I tried everything, but it just didn't work. I'm so tired, Alex."

Alexander patted his friend's back, offering support. "It's alright, Tristan. Remember, we're just starting out. Maybe we need to find our own way, our own strengths. Don't give up."

Tristan perked up slightly, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "But how, Alex? I feel like I've tried everything."

Alexander leaned in, his voice lowering to a whisper. "Well, Tristan, remember how Mrs. Larkin said that harnessing mana requires focus and concentration? Maybe instead of trying to force it, we should try to relax and let it flow naturally. It's like water, you know? If you try too hard to control it, it slips through your fingers."

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

Tristan blinked, processing Alexander's words. "Relax and let it flow naturally... I never thought about it that way."

Alexander smiled encouragingly. "Exactly, Tristan! We have to be patient with ourselves and trust that we'll find our own unique way of connecting with mana. Let's give it another shot tonight, but this time, let's try to find that balance between focus and relaxation."

With a newfound determination, Tristan nodded. "Alright, Alex. I'll give it another try. Thanks for the hint."

As they entered the classroom, joining their fellow classmates who all bore the signs of exhaustion from their own failed attempts, the teacher, noticing the weariness in their eyes, sighed in exasperation.

"What have you all been up to?" she scolded, her voice stern. "I told you that harnessing mana requires patience and guidance. It's impossible for young children like yourselves to achieve it on your own."

As Alexander raised his hand, his voice filled with curiosity, Mrs. Larkin's gaze shifted toward him, a mix of surprise and understanding in her eyes. "Yes, Alexander?"

The young boy stood tall, his determination evident. "Mrs. Larkin, how do we learn? How do we improve?"

A faint smile played on the teacher's lips. "Well, Alexander, that's what these classes are for. To guide you in harnessing mana and help you develop your abilities. It was careless and unproductive of you all to attempt it on your own without proper guidance."

She continued, her voice gentle yet firm, "Mana is a powerful force, and it requires discipline and focus to control it. In our classes, we will explore different techniques and exercises to cultivate your connection with mana, gradually unlocking its potential within you."

Mrs. Larkin motioned toward a new set of orbs at the front of the class. They were different from the ones before, shimmering with a warm glow. "These orbs are designed to respond only when mana passes through them. Your task is to channel your mana and light up these orbs, demonstrating your control over this magical energy."

With patient guidance, Mrs. Larkin explained the intricacies of mana manipulation. She emphasized the importance of concentration and visualization, teaching the children how to channel their inner energy and guide it toward the orbs. The class absorbed her teachings, their determination renewed.

One by one, the children attempted to send their mana through the orbs. Concentration filled the air as they focused their energy, their minds visualizing the flow of mana. Flickers of light danced within the orbs as some students began to make progress.

Tristan, eager to prove himself, took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He recalled the hints and encouragements from Alexander, allowing them to fuel his determination. With newfound focus, he channeled his mana, directing it toward the orb before him. A surge of energy coursed through him, and to the astonishment of the teachers and his classmates, his orb erupted in a brilliant, radiant glow. A mixture of awe and surprise filled the room, the other children witnessing Tristan's breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Alexander, not wanting to overshadow his friend's achievement, circulated his mana with a controlled grace. His orb flickered with a soft glow, a testament to his progress and burgeoning understanding.

The room filled with murmurs of excitement and admiration as the children marveled at the sight before them. Mrs. Larkin smiled, her pride evident as she observed their growth.

"Now you see," Mrs. Larkin said, her voice filled with encouragement, "with discipline and focus, you can control mana and channel it to achieve great things. Remember, practice is essential. The more you exercise your mana circuit, the stronger and more refined your control will become."

As the class came to an end, Mrs. Larkin dismissed the students, their minds buzzing with newfound knowledge and excitement. But as Tristan glanced at his schedule, a sinking feeling washed over him.

"Literature?" he muttered under his breath, his initial joy quickly turning into horror. The dreaded subject that seemed to always challenge him.

Alexander, ever perceptive, noticed his friend's horrified expression and couldn't help but chuckle softly. He placed a comforting hand on Tristan's shoulder, trying to lighten the mood. "Don't worry, Tristan. We've already conquered mana. Now it's time to tackle writing. And hey, at least we won't have to run around and exhaust ourselves in this class, right?"

Tristan couldn't help but crack a small smile, a mix of relief and amusement. "Yeah, I guess you're right. No running, just lots of thinking and... words."

They shared a brief, endearing moment of laughter, the weight of the upcoming class momentarily lifted. With Alexander's lighthearted humor, Tristan found a renewed sense of determination to face the challenges ahead.
