Prologue

“Why do we die? Why do we live? Why do we struggle to find ourselves?”, the little box proudly displays on its factory new shined surface.

“This plagues mankind, and at the same time intrigues it so profoundly, but this is why all the greatest minds mankind has known have pondered and pondered this very concept; to what extent do our lives have meaning? None of the fools took any action for it though”.

The DTR-15, a revolutionary invention constructs a bridge, piecing together the puzzle psychologists and scientists alike couldn’t fit together. Something only he found the secrets to.

Nobody knew what the inventor’s name was, or even who he was, all that’s known is that one day an invention in a meager little box showed up at Innocu Co. with a small sticky note stating the operation instructions for the device as well as who to use it on. Of course at first, the company was suspicious, bringing bomb experts, scientists, chemists, electricians, and countless other professionals to see if it was some sort of sick psychopath’s joke or if it truly  was the real deal. All of them couldn’t find a single flaw with it. Being completely safe, it was decided to be tested, and the first subject was to be the CEO’s daughter.

“Could it really do it?” the executive asked the little black polygon, “Will it bring back my daughter?”.

The first test was, of course, a tremendous success. The daughter was in a persistent vegetative state and couldn’t even tell when her miracle was being placed upon her delicate head.

The storming night outside had began to calm at last, the slow metronomic pattering of the rain mirrored the minds of the CEO, nurse, and doctor as a suspense began tightening its grip on the room’s occupants.

“Go ahead” the commanding doctor noted to the nurse attending the girl.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

The switch was turned on, the quantum computer was hooked into the device, and on a small screen on the desk next to the daughter, a faint light faded in. The screen crackled to life with a neon green splashing of sparks and the word “AKIR” written boldly before fading to a white screen. As the slow clicking of the quantum computer began to speed up, a small screen was presented with a list of questions in a very simplistic format.

“Is there some sort of controller on that thing?”, the CEO demanded.

“No, it appears there’s only an ‘on’ switch and a few plugs to hook up the Q-PC”, the nurse replied.

The rainy pattering outside continued as the three in the room discussed if there was a part missing, a broken component, or something they missed.

The monitor then flickered for a split second.

Everyone in the room turned to watch.

The cursor on the screen began to move.

As the three watched the mouse select each question after the next, astonishment painted each of their faces as the creeping realization began to dawn upon them.

“These answers are being selected by her, right?” the CEO echoed the thought everyone at that moment began to think.

“Baby! Ella! Can you hear me?” the executive sobbed, “Please, move the mouse around! Let me know you can hear me!”.

The mouse, however, did not move in response to the heartbroken father, but instead continued to answer the 100 questions carefully.

The trio continued to see if something was going to happen after the 100 questions were completed, but just as the 100th question had it’s question answered, the screen blinked once and then went black. 5 minutes went by. Then 10 minutes passed along. Eventually, 20 minutes had strolled by without so much as a single flicker of light from the machine. Anticipation had built up as the father’s hopes had done as well, then crashed as the screen simply turned black, which was quickly replaced by a gloomy overhanging disappointment. The nurse simply consoled the father while the doctor began to solemnly strut away to his office to fill out the paperwork on this incident. As the nurse left the father time to be with his daughter alone, a light appeared.

A strange symbol appeared on the screen in a light blue shade, and as quickly as it had appeared, it had gone again, replaced by the words, “Test subject <1> received. Welcome to Akir.”

And thus the new world was discovered.
