001 Cup of Coffee

001 Cup of Coffee

“Don’t be panic. Don’t shout or scream. Don’t leave your room.” Someone in the phone call ordered. I received this weird call this morning. The person on the phone asked me to stay in my room and just wait for the next command, with a special treated voice which was hard to tell if the speaker was male or female, young or old.

It was just like a stupid and boring joke that asked you not to go to work from some naughty kids. Obviously this wouldn’t work for me. It was impossible for me to sit on my little chair in front of my laptop because I had to go to my office and start my work there. I ignored it and then went downstairs.

It was a nice sunny day. The breeze was blowing gently and the trees were shaking lazily. It was cruel to shut myself indoors in such a wonderful day, I thought.

My phone rang just as I stepped out of gate of the flat.

“Go back please. Don’t try to…”

“Who ARE you?” I asked impatiently and confusingly, “Why do you order me? – And HOW do you know I’m leaving my flat?”

“Sorry but NOT SAFE to answer now. GO BACK. DO AS WHAT I SAID. This Is Not A Joke. I'm from one of the top secret Intelligence agencies and all your actions are under our noses. Recently we got reports reporting that You will get killed in the next ten minutes if you don’t take any action. Therefore I'm here to save you. ” That person on the phone seemed a bit worried and the voice was more serious than before. “Don’t believe me? Look right. There is a Starbucks at the end of the street. Ah. You did looked right and saw that coffee shop, didn't you? And let me see, You're holding your phone in your right hand with a handbag in your left hand filled with 3 pieces of files, which are 19 pages in total, 2 folders and a thin laptop. Am I right? Please -Trust me. ”

Holy… That's exactly correct…

After the great shock, I decided to follow the odd commands and see what would happen next. I went back to my room step by step nervously, holding the phone call in my hand.

What did I do to be in such troubles…

“Thanks a lot. Now please do as the followings:

Grab the cup of coffee by your hand and take it to the Starbucks at the end of the street. Someone will follow or chase you but DO NOT be panic and just run, as fast as you can.” Finally it added, “Don’t hang up.”

I looked around and spot a cup of coffee near my laptop. The laptop was showing the instructions told in the call. I was surprised and even a bit frightened. I had no idea why my laptop, with a top-level firewall installed, was easily controlled by a person unknown.

“Now look outside.” The person ordered, “In the next few minutes, those men in black will try to get you. All you need will be to rush into the Starbucks with your cup of coffee, safely of course.”

I looked through the windows and saw six or seven men walking in the street right below my flat. Those weird men who looked like top secret agents were all dressed in black jackets, wearing pure black sunglasses.

“Whoa…Who are they?” I asked, keeping my eyes on those men.

“Not safe to tell now. Just follow the orders.”

Fine.

I took my cup of coffee and went downstairs. There were about one third cup of coffee inside, spreading light warm smell of coffee. I stopped a the front door of my flat.

“Very good. Now just rush. No need to care about the coffee,” The person commanded, “It won’t spill out.”

I took a deep breath and cleared my mind.

Rush, just rush…To the Starbucks…

After a few seconds and another deep breath, I opened the door. RUSH!

I shot outside right toward the Starbucks at the end of the street, feeling the wind trying to smash my face and everything flashing in my eyes. I was like buffed and running horribly fast.

Just seconds later, I was about to crash on the door of the Starbucks. Before I tried to slow myself down, I had already crashed through the door but without getting any hurts – that door was like not existed.

When I came to myself, I found myself in a warm and quiet hall. The whole hall was filled with the smell of coffee and milk. It was completely different from what Starbucks should be like.

I looked back through the narrow windows on the door. Those men in black were roaming outside. For some reasons, they seemed to be not able to come in.

“Well done!” Shouted the person on the phone, excitedly, “You’re awesome!”

I was out of breath and about to fall on the floor.

“Who – who are they?” I asked, breathing heavily, “It’s safe to tell here, isn’t it?”

“They are well-trained assassins, who have been looking for you for years.”

“Wha – why? Why me? – and what do they want?”

“They want your coffee. They’ve been looking for it for years, and even for decades.”

“Coffee? ”I was confused.“But I’ve just made it an hour ago. Why…Decades?”

“Not just for the liquid, the coffee itself, but for what it represents.”

“What it represents…You mean a god or something…? But what does it have to do with me? I’m a coder, not a believer! ”

“Of course it has something to do with you.

Your cup of coffee isn’t a simple cup of drink.

It represents –

Java.”
