01 - Capture the Wind

01 - Capture the Wind

I sit by the tree, watch the grass ripple, watch everything. I could think to myself, see no words, hear no voice. I ask myself, how could this all come to be? An illusion, perhaps a dream, maybe it's all in my head.

I would encompass it all, before the fall, begin to write, about my flight. Wind in my face, want to embrace, take my hand, view the land, make my heart ache, part the wind break.

It now seems clear, how could I not know? To write it in words I must, to capture the wind I must, let the wings flow.

In the age of exploration, when ships are the main mode of transport, the planet Frost is home to some 8 million people. The planet Frost gets its name from the whisps of white aurora that fill parts of the sky at night. In a few rare rare events, the aurora descends on the planet, creating drifting fog across the planet's surface, even in the most tropical regions. This resembles one thing to the planet's inhabitants, the snow drifts seen in the winter and pulled by wind from mountain peaks. Different cultures and different people exist, but two would forever decide the course of history. OLier and Rhiv are the names. The two countries that will are plotting a war.

Rhiv, a country with a spirit like people, has every right to be angry with Lier. Spirit infusion is a forbiddion process to the Rhiv. It is a process that takes a sprit and infuses their power into an inanimate object. At the same time the spirit's power and very life force is ripped from them. They are no longer able to move under their own free will, they are confined to the object they are fused with. Being pulled from the object would mean leading a life without any spirit abilities or worse, death. They're ne enemies, the Lier have discovered the art of spirit infusion.

Ships are the main mode of transport on Frost, and are limited to water. The plan is quite simple, infuse ships with air spirits to fly. Mercenaries would be hired to accomplish this. Go to the neighboring islands where the Sageyoku dwell, study their spirit infusion process, and use the same methods for ships. The Sageyoku would not be pursuaded, so force would be needed. And thus, our story begins...

Boring. The word played through his head again, boring. That was how the last fifteen days had been, completely boring. He was about to run the word through his head once more when he felt it coming on again. "Not again!" He stopped leaning against the ship's rail and jumped up from the wooden bucket he had turned over for a temporary seat. A whir of brown hair went over the railing followed by numerous gagging sounds. It ended with a sigh and a dull green sleave to the mouth.

This was Dante Imperv, one of the lesser known mercenaries, with a well known condition on any ships he served, sea sickness. If asked to describe himself, Dante would say he was a role model citizen of the Fortis continent. If further enquired what he meant by role model, he would tell you it was his term for average. Dante wasn't far off the mark, like most people of Fortis, he had brown eyes, brown hair, the usual white skin of his people and a slightly white voice. There was just one exception...

"Not again!" Dante was still standing when he started making gagging sounds. He leaned over the railing again, hoping not to jettison his breakfast.

Unlike most Fortans, Dante was cursed with sea sickness. Anytime he was on a ship for too long, he began a struggle with his body to keep the previous meal from going overboard.
